<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Journalism <strong>and</strong><br />
Telecommunications<br />
UK’s <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Journalism <strong>and</strong> Telecomunications<br />
is a pr<strong>of</strong>essionally-oriented undergraduate program.<br />
Working closely with media firms <strong>and</strong> the local community,<br />
the <strong>School</strong> strives to maintain the high academic<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>of</strong> its accrediting body, the Accrediting Council<br />
on Education in Journalism <strong>and</strong> Mass <strong>Communication</strong>s,<br />
while providing students with pr<strong>of</strong>essional skills. Three<br />
undergraduate majors are <strong>of</strong>fered: Integrated Strategic<br />
<strong>Communication</strong>, Journalism <strong>and</strong> Telecommunications.<br />
Students in Journalism have the opportunity to report <strong>and</strong><br />
write for a wealth <strong>of</strong> campus media; students in Integrated<br />
Strategic <strong>Communication</strong> <strong>and</strong> Telecommunications<br />
are required to complete a for-credit internship before<br />
graduation.<br />

The school’s Dow Jones<br />
Summer High <strong>School</strong><br />
Journalism Workshop gave<br />
students the opportunity to<br />
learn the basics <strong>of</strong> sports <strong>and</strong><br />
news writing while enjoying<br />
local attractions <strong>and</strong> sporting<br />
events. The Workshop lasted<br />
ten days <strong>and</strong> was attended by<br />
13 high school students.<br />
Several <strong>of</strong> those who attended<br />
the workshop are now<br />
pre-majors in the school.<br />

Nineteen University <strong>of</strong><br />
Kentucky students, most<br />
<strong>of</strong> them ISC majors,<br />
participated in “Advertising<br />
<strong>and</strong> Public Relations in<br />
London,” a course taught in<br />
London, Engl<strong>and</strong> during the<br />
winter intersession. The<br />
course was co-taught by Dr.<br />
Beth Barnes <strong>and</strong> Dr. Alyssa<br />
Eckman through the<br />
Cooperative Center for<br />
Study Abroad, a multi-university<br />
consortium <strong>of</strong> which<br />
UK is a member.<br />
ISC senior Megan Tolley,<br />
Louisville, Ky., was one <strong>of</strong><br />
two student recipients <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Algernon Sydney Sullivan<br />
Medallion recognizing outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />
public service contributions.<br />
The Sullivan<br />
Medallion is awarded at<br />
graduation, <strong>and</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
university’s highest honors.<br />

New York awarded scholarships<br />
worth $750 each to ISC<br />

were named to the 2008<br />

Academic Honor Roll for<br />
winter sports.<br />
The UK Ad Club held its<br />
first senior showcase <strong>and</strong><br />
awarded ISCar trophies to<br />
top winners selected by<br />
judges from the Lexington<br />
Advertising Club. Taking<br />
the gold ISCar was Naitore<br />
Kiogora for her Philips<br />
ad execution. Ryan Love<br />
received the silver ISCar<br />
award for his work with the<br />
Frazier International History<br />
Museum in Louisville <strong>and</strong><br />
Sarah Myers earned a bronze<br />
ISCar for her “snow white”<br />
Clorox execution.<br />
Sean Rose, journalism senior<br />
from Crestwood, Ky., won the<br />
Roy W. Howard Reporting<br />
Award. He received a one<br />
week study trip to Asia.<br />
Rose also won best four-year<br />
reporter for 2007 <strong>and</strong> second<br />
place for news story <strong>of</strong> the<br />
year from the Associated<br />
Collegiate Press.<br />
