Amendment Center. The<br />

Center also sponsored a panel<br />

discussion, “The Next<br />

Frontier: Libel Invades the<br />

Internet.” Panelists were Jon<br />

Fleischaker; Monica Dias;<br />

Richard Labunski; <strong>and</strong> David<br />

Giles. The moderator was<br />

Judy Clabes.<br />

The Scripps Howard First<br />

essay contest on the First<br />

Amendment <strong>and</strong> voting. The<br />

contest is run through the<br />

Kentucky Secretary <strong>of</strong> State’s<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice. Members <strong>of</strong> the Scripps<br />

Center steering committee<br />

served as judges, selecting<br />

one winner each from 9 th ,<br />

10 th , 11 th , <strong>and</strong> 12 th grade<br />

entries from Kentucky<br />

high schools.<br />

The 6 th annual Richard G.<br />

Wilson Alumni Symposium<br />

for Journalism focused on<br />

sports writing. The panelists<br />

were Sally Jenkins<br />

Jones (JOU/’88), Columbus<br />

Dispatch (Ohio); Jennifer<br />

Smith (JOU), Lexington<br />

Herald-Leader; <strong>and</strong> Brian<br />

o The 2007 Bids for Brains<br />

Scholarship Fundraiser<br />

earned $20,000 for endowments<br />

<strong>and</strong> scholarships in<br />

the school. The emcee for the<br />

event was Nick Clooney. Over<br />

100 people attended this<br />

annual event.<br />

forum on open records for<br />

Kentucky Attorney General<br />

c<strong>and</strong>idates Jack Conway (D)<br />

<strong>and</strong> Stan Lee (R). The<br />

moderator was Judy Clabes.<br />

Lecture Series featured<br />

Kenneth Sternad, Vice<br />

President <strong>of</strong> Public Relations<br />

for United Parcel Service.<br />

The 2007 Excellence in<br />

Public Relations Award was<br />

presented to Jay Rayburn.<br />

Rayburn began his academic<br />

career at UK in 1975. He is<br />

the author or co-author <strong>of</strong><br />

more than a dozen publications<br />

<strong>and</strong> is the head <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Florida State University<br />

Division <strong>of</strong> Public Relations<br />

<strong>and</strong> Advertising.<br />

The <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Journalism<br />

<strong>and</strong> Telecommunications <strong>and</strong><br />

the UK Career Center jointly<br />

sponsored an Internship &<br />

Career Fair. Over 50<br />

companies participated.<br />
