created as well as<br />

upgrades to several existing<br />

ones <strong>and</strong> conducted our<br />

annual Phonathon <strong>and</strong><br />

Bids for Brains scholarship<br />

fund raiser.<br />

• Phonathon a success—<br />

thanks to you! The<br />

Phonathon broke past<br />

records for number <strong>of</strong> pledges<br />

made <strong>and</strong> gifts received. We<br />

received 934 pledges <strong>and</strong><br />

$41,865.27. This is a 7.15<br />

percent increase over last<br />

year <strong>and</strong> is the largest<br />

amount in the college’s 16-<br />

year phoning history. Again,<br />

we thank you for your continued<br />

support <strong>of</strong> our students<br />

<strong>and</strong> programs. We hope<br />

that you will continue to say<br />

“yes” to the student callers<br />

<strong>and</strong> help us to continue to<br />

exp<strong>and</strong> our scholarship<br />

opportunities <strong>and</strong> activities.<br />

• The Clabes Family First<br />

Amendment Center Fund<br />

was established in the<br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Journalism <strong>and</strong><br />

Telecommunications in<br />

2007. In 2008, the Scripps<br />

Howard Foundation made a<br />

$50,000 gift to endow the<br />

Judith G. Clabes Scholarship<br />

in honor <strong>of</strong> her service to the<br />

Scripps Howard Foundation.<br />

The scholarship will be<br />

awarded to declared upperdivision<br />

majors, preferably<br />

print who have demonstrated<br />

through class work, internships,<br />

part-time work, or<br />

extra-curricular activities an<br />

exceptional underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> commitment to the<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> First<br />

Amendment advocacy <strong>and</strong><br />

principles in the pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

<strong>and</strong> civic life <strong>of</strong> a working<br />

journalist <strong>and</strong>/or <strong>of</strong> the vital<br />

relationship <strong>of</strong> these principles<br />

to the preservation <strong>of</strong><br />
