WOMEN, ART & POLITICS<br />

Organized by YBCA, The Way That We Rhyme showcases<br />

<strong>the</strong> politically charged work of a new generation<br />

of women. Emphasizing per<strong>for</strong>mativity, collaboration<br />

and coalition building, <strong>the</strong> works are influenced by <strong>the</strong><br />

feminist ideologies and activist movements of <strong>the</strong> past,<br />

while also speaking loudly and clearly to <strong>the</strong> issues facing<br />

women right now. Adhering to <strong>the</strong> notion that <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

strength in numbers, <strong>the</strong> show culls toge<strong>the</strong>r work from<br />

women of differing backgrounds and disciplines to<br />

highlight <strong>the</strong> common goals of <strong>the</strong>ir practices.<br />

TRACING ROADS THROUGH CENTRAL ASIA<br />

Apr 18–Jul 13, <strong>2008</strong> // Terrace Galleries<br />

A new generation of artists from Central Asia and surrounding<br />

regions are creating work that is notable <strong>for</strong> its powerful<br />

imagery, original language and a profound political<br />

awareness. Co-curated by Elena Sorokina, <strong>the</strong> exhibition<br />

explores <strong>the</strong> complex relationship between <strong>the</strong> process<br />

of nation building and <strong>the</strong> political nature of historical<br />

memory in <strong>the</strong> work of a handful of artists from <strong>the</strong><br />

region’s newly developing countries. The works on view<br />

focus on <strong>the</strong> social and geoeconomic issues facing <strong>the</strong>se<br />

countries and <strong>the</strong>ir people, illustrating how societies<br />

change and individuals survive.<br />
