Education intrinsic to character development
Education is one of the most important factors
in the evolution of humanity, the other more
influential one being religion. I believe that today
religious zeal and education should come
together and work hand in hand. Only together
they can constitute a single unifying,
inspirational, guiding force for coordinating
human thought and expression within a
traditionally accepted pattern.
Education serves what is in reality its most
basic purpose, the training of character.
Education not only changes the character of an
individual or society as whole, which are all different
from one another, but assists them (read individual and
society) to develop to their utmost capacity.
I acknowledge that education has a great effect upon
the human race; we see that children of the same age,
nativity and from the same household, under the guidance
of one teacher, differ in their minds and comprehensions.
Training and education not only change the human
substance but produce a marvellous effect. By the
effective power of education the virtues and capacities
of the human reality can be revealed. I believe that every
nation should aim to build up a spiritually regenerate
humanity, and to establish a functionally united world.
To achieve these education is intrinsic.
I give prominence to education in delineating the
structure of the future world. It is chiefly through
educative influences that we must build up in ideology
and loyalty consecrated to the goal of world peace. Only
through, education of youth and adult can the adverse
and chaotic elements of society be guided. "Man is
supreme. Lack of proper education has, however,
deprived him of that which he inherently possess."
We must promote world, by every means within
our power, the material as well as spiritual enlightenment
of the youth. The means for the education of children, to
provide the best means for their progress and
development, is incumbent upon the world of mankind.
It becomes not only progress towards world unity but
the brightest outlook for the future
generations of children. They shall possess
a common knowledge of all things, illiteracy
shall disappear, moral and spiritual
worthiness strengthened, and oneness
achieved through the education of all.
For teachers, parents and all
concerned with public life, moral education
is an indispensable part of children's
education. The systematic development of
a moral education programme must be
regarded as central to the building of a progressive society
and a sense of true identify among its future citizens.
I believe that the development of moral character
constitutes the essential foundation of a true education.
"Good behaviour and high moral character must come
first for unless the character is trained acquiring knowledge
will only prove injurious. Knowledge is praiseworthy
when it is coupled with ethical conduct and a virtuous
character, otherwise it is a deadly poison, a frightful
danger."
Thus, beyond the belief in the importance of
providing children with a relevant and excellent academic
education, it is my view that education must also cast a
transforming influence upon the character of the individual
so that intellectual learning is of genuine benefit to the
individual and society.
I believe that moral capabilities cannot be developed
in a secular framework of education. An indispensable
requisite for developing these capabilities is to establish
a connection between the human heart and God, thus
enabling the individual to manifest the spiritual qualities
with which the human soul has been endowed, such as
justice generosity, love, compassion and truthfulness. The
teachings of the religions of the world are the depositories
of truths that assist every human being in establishing a
relationship with God and developing these qualities.
