PROGRAM<br />

Dr. James Kessler, the new chairman <strong>of</strong> the Pankey Institute’s Department<br />

<strong>of</strong> Education will present our 5th continuing dental education<br />

collaboration. Dr. Kessler will explore Dr. L.D. Pankey’s philosophy as<br />

it relates to the practice <strong>of</strong> restorative dentistry today. Join us for this<br />

thought-provoking and enlightening program.<br />

THE SPEAKER<br />

Dr. James C. Kessler, former<br />

chair <strong>of</strong> the Division <strong>of</strong> Restorative<br />

<strong>Dentistry</strong> at the University <strong>of</strong> Oklahoma,<br />

has been named the new<br />

chairman <strong>of</strong> the Pankey Institute’s<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Education. He will<br />

begin his appointment in January<br />

2011, succeeding Dr. Irwin Becker.<br />

Dr. Kessler earned his DDS degree<br />

from the University <strong>of</strong> Oklahoma<br />

College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong> in 1977. He<br />

entered practice as an associate<br />

and taught part time in the<br />

department <strong>of</strong> endodontics at OU,<br />

as well as teaching in the general<br />

practice residency at Children’s<br />

Memorial Hospital. When <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

a position to teach full time in the<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Fixed Prosthodontics,<br />

he joined the faculty and<br />

taught for the next seven years<br />

attaining the rank <strong>of</strong> associate<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor. Continuing his career<br />

in academics, he accepted an<br />

appointment at the Medical University<br />

<strong>of</strong> South Carolina College<br />

<strong>of</strong> Dental Medicine as an associate<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the crown and bridge<br />

department. While there, he taught<br />

advanced laboratory techniques,<br />

ceramics, fi xed prosthodontics,<br />

and occlusion. After 10 years<br />

in dental education, Dr. Kessler<br />

transitioned into private practice in<br />

Tulsa, Okla., where he remained<br />

for the next 18 years. He continued<br />

to remain active in teaching.<br />

In addition, he was active in three<br />

study clubs, including the Tulsa<br />

Seattle Study Club. In 2007, he<br />

was presented an opportunity to<br />

return to dental education. He was<br />

named the Herbert T. Shillingburg<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Fixed Prosthodontics<br />

and chair <strong>of</strong> the Division <strong>of</strong> Restorative<br />

<strong>Dentistry</strong> at the University <strong>of</strong><br />

Oklahoma College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dentistry</strong>. Dr.<br />

Kessler co-authored a textbook<br />

with Dr. Herbert T. Shillingburg,<br />

has been a contributor to other<br />

textbooks, as well as published<br />

articles in the dental literature. He<br />

has presented more than 300 lectures<br />

to dental and dental laboratory<br />

groups, residencies, and study<br />

clubs across the United States,<br />

Canada, Europe, and parts <strong>of</strong><br />

Asia. He is a member <strong>of</strong> the ADA,<br />

American Academy <strong>of</strong> Restorative<br />

<strong>Dentistry</strong>, American College <strong>of</strong><br />

Dentists, Pierre Fauchard Academy,<br />

Academy <strong>of</strong> General <strong>Dentistry</strong>,<br />

and Southwest Academy <strong>of</strong><br />

Restorative <strong>Dentistry</strong>. He was the<br />

2004 President <strong>of</strong> the American<br />

Academy <strong>of</strong> Restorative <strong>Dentistry</strong>,<br />

currently serves on its foundation<br />

and fi nance committees, and has<br />

provided the academy with more<br />

than 20 years <strong>of</strong> service.<br />

PROGRAM<br />

The 28th Edition <strong>of</strong> the Annual Dental Review will be held at the<br />

beautiful Embassy Suites Resort at Kingston Plantation, and should<br />

prove to be a great update for the general dentist. This year’s program<br />

will feature a broad potpourri <strong>of</strong> practical topics, highlighted by an<br />

excellent line-up <strong>of</strong> speakers including Dr. Robert Lowe, our featured<br />

speaker, as well as guest speakers, Drs. Larry Holt and Gavin Heymann,<br />

along with noted faculty from <strong>UNC</strong>. Day 1 will feature Dr. Gavin<br />

Heymann with a very insightful orthodontic review for the general practitioner,<br />

followed by “bread and butter” restorative topics for the “wetfi<br />

ngered” dentist presented by Drs. Ed Swift and Harald Heymann.<br />

The program on Day 2 will be presented by our featured speaker,<br />

Dr. Robert Lowe. Dr. Lowe is widely known for his practical presentations<br />

on clinically relevant topics in restorative dentistry. He maintains<br />

a private practice in Charlotte, NC, largely devoted to esthetic<br />

dentistry. Dr. Lowe has lectured widely and has received the Gordon<br />

J. Christensen Award for excellence as a CE speaker. Dr. Lowe will be<br />

addressing “clinical solutions to practical problems,” as well as “practical<br />

approaches to surgical tissue management.”<br />

Day 3 will include excellent presentations from guest speaker,<br />

Dr. Larry Holt as well as a time-proven favorite, Dr. Terry Donovan. Dr.<br />

Holt will address “records and planning for implant-based treatment,”<br />

while Dr. Donovan will present vital information on the successful<br />

restoration <strong>of</strong> endodontically treated teeth. Get the facts based on<br />
