CSIRO-UTAS PHD PROGRAM IN QUANTITATIVE MARINE SCIENCE<br />
The world needs more marine scientists<br />
with high level mathematical and<br />
computational skills. The CSIRO-UTAS<br />
PhD Program in Quantitative Marine<br />
Science (QMS) is offering generous<br />
scholarships to students with quantitative<br />
backgrounds for research projects that<br />
apply mathematics and statistics to marine<br />
science challenges of local, national,<br />
regional and global significance. This<br />
includes:<br />
using advanced skills to make marine<br />
science increasingly predictive and<br />
quantitative<br />
providing useful predictions based on<br />
understandings of ocean processes<br />
allowing economic sectors to respond<br />
effectively to climate variability<br />
understanding the role of ocean<br />
processes in climate<br />
change and the<br />
influence of oceanic<br />
environments on<br />
large marine<br />
ecosystems<br />
providing<br />
quantitative<br />
decision<br />
support<br />
tools and<br />
processes<br />
to enable<br />
Australia to<br />
effectively manage<br />
marine biodiversity,<br />
ecosystem function and<br />
the use of marine resources.<br />
QMS is hosted by the University of<br />
Tasmania’s specialist Institute for<br />
Marine and Antarctic Studies<br />
(IMAS). IMAS research<br />
and research training is<br />
innovative, relevant, and<br />
globally distinctive.<br />
Located in Tasmania,<br />
IMAS is a centre of<br />
excellence for temperate<br />
marine and Antarctic<br />
studies. The island state<br />
is home to a community<br />
of internationally<br />
renowned organisations with<br />
research expertise in marine<br />
science, oceanography, climate<br />
science, geosciences and Antarctic<br />
and Southern Ocean studies.<br />
