HFS Faculty Fall ‘74 brought a new major to UMC. Home and Family Service’s objective is to prepare students for employment in the social service at the paraprofessional level, for employment in private home, and as homemaker. Students in HFS learn about child development and gain practical experience by working in the Children’s Center. Headed by Peter Clark, the center is located in Robertson Hall. The center is staffed by full time professionals as well as student and other community adult volunteers. An ever expanding facet of HFS is work and training with elderly. Peter Clark, director of the Children’s Center Londa Erdman, HFS major, gets practical training working at the Children’s Center. Crookston Mayor Harold Thomforde gets an assist in proclaiming March 31 to April 6 as Week of the Young Child. The week’s activities included discussions on the services available to young children in the community, an open house at the Polk County Day Activity Center and Child Care Center and other programs for children. 60
