Strengthening Communities Across Tampa
Academy Prep Center
of Tampa
Skills for life. Our volunteers teach a
social skills program for students at
Academy Prep Center of Tampa, a
private, nonprofit middle school for
inner-city children who qualify for
need-based scholarships and who
have the desire to succeed in a
rigorous academic program.
Children’s Cancer Center
A brighter day. We sponsor and
staff a Fall Festival and Spring
Carnival, which each draw crowds
of more than 200 people whose
lives have been touched by cancer.
For children who are newly
diagnosed with cancer, we assemble
special love bundles with items that
the children can use while at the
hospital for treatments.
Children’s Literacy
Project
My own library. We send trained
volunteers into kindergarten
classrooms at Hillsborough County
Title I schools to conduct
storytelling sessions and give each
child 16 books per year to take
home. Support materials are also
distributed to the classrooms for
hands-on experiences with
literature.
Community Action
Helping hands. Junior League of
Tampa members provide funding
and hands-on volunteer service in
the community to qualified agencies
for short-term or one day projects
or events.
Connected by 25
Extending the connection. We
assist Connected by 25 with
preparing foster children, ages 13 to
17, for adulthood and life after
foster care. We also sponsor events
to allow the older youth to
reconnect with their younger
siblings who reside with other
families.
DACCO
Building healthy families. Our
volunteers will implement a training
program to help women, who are
moving beyond drug addiction, build
healthy family relationships, maintain
a donated clothing closet, and
financially assist with new
construction.
Food 4 Kids
Filling empty bellies. The League
provides food for all children
enrolled in the Kids’ Café program at
the Wilbert Davis-Belmont Heights
Boys and Girls Club to eat over
weekends and holidays when the
meals they typically receive at school
and at the club are not available.
Glazer Children’s
Museum
Building for the future. The Junior
League of Tampa pledged $250,000
to support the construction of the
new museum. Once it opens, we
will give volunteer hours focused on
providing museum access and
programming to disadvantaged
children.
Hope Prep
Hands-on learning for students that
need it most. We provide four
classes, from preschool to
5th grade, with learning centers
unique to each grade level’s needs
and volunteers to facilitate the
activities.
Kids Connect
Find a forever family. Our
volunteers plan, coordinate and
facilitate two events each year that
provide a fun, natural environment
for hard-to-place foster children and
prospective parents to meet and
spend quality time together.
Kids in the Kitchen
Fighting childhood obesity. By
promoting family health through
innovative, fun programming like
Kids in the Kitchen, The Junior
League of Tampa continues to build
on a tradition of involvement in
important community matters.
Love Bundles
Labor of love. Our volunteers
provide children in foster care and
protective custody with special
backpacks containing essential
developmental items and immediate
needs. Each year, virtually every
child removed from his or her
home receives one of our Love
Bundles.
Mary Lee’s House
A safe haven. We continue our
support of this center where
children, who have been abused,
receive comprehensive assessments
and services ‘under one roof’
ensuring that they are not
traumatized again by the systems
designed to protect them.
Treasures for Tampa
Fulfilling needs. A transformation of
the former Thrift Sale into a
community service project,
Treasures for Tampa volunteers
collect, sort, and distribute member
merchandise donations to
community organizations with
specific needs.
