Women Building
a Better Community

Dear Reader
On behalf of The Junior League of
Tampa and our 1,600 women
volunteers, I am pleased to
introduce our second Junior
League of Tampa Annual Profile.
The photos and project profiles
show our League volunteers
working in a charter elementary
school serving the needs of
children with disabilities, giving a
child his very own book to keep,
delivering hurricane supplies to the
homebound, preparing for a youth
summit for foster care children,
and much more.
Across Hillsborough County, we
continue to focus our project
efforts in three areas:
•Improving the lives of children in
the foster care system
•Enriching children’s lives through
literacy and education
•Providing basic needs for
disadvantaged children
We are proud to commit 100% of
the net fundraising proceeds to our
programs and projects. Fiscal year
2008 was a landmark year for our
major fundraiser, Holiday Gift
Market. The event was attended
by a record 7,000 shoppers. In
May, we received the Association
of Junior Leagues International, Inc.
2008 JL Award for Marketing &
Communication for our outstanding
Holiday Gift Market marketing and
public relations campaigns.
And, as you’ll read in this profile,
our efforts go far beyond traditional
voluntarism. We help our
members move to higher levels of
leadership so that they can better
serve the Tampa Bay community
within the League and outside
organizations.
Here are just a couple of
examples:
•The Junior League of Tampa
conducts an annual Leadership
Development Seminar to increase
the leadership capabilities of its
volunteers. Speakers include Past
League Presidents, elected officials,
CEOs, and professional trainers.
•We continue to train our new
volunteers, whom we call
Provisionals, utilizing an eight
month learning program where
they are educated about the history
of the League and its evolution to
the highly impactful nonprofit
organization it is today. During this
past year, our 100+ Provisionals
engaged in hands-on-learning by
planning, designing and executing
a community project that provided
real impact for PACE Center for
Girls, Inc.
Our Board of Directors is proud of
how inspired, enthusiastic League
volunteers use their leadership
skills, creativity and can-do attitude
to strengthen the Tampa Bay
community where we live
and work.
Jennifer L. Johnson
President 2008-2009

Community Building
In Action
Through our 14 community
projects, we arm nonprofits and
civic organizations with the power
of our trained volunteers while
providing the financial assistance
they need to better achieve their
missions.
What does this mean When The
Junior League of Tampa teams
with Connected by 25, foster
care children aging out have the
essential household items to move
into their own apartment. By
helping the Children’s Cancer
Center, families touched by
pediatric cancer experience a day
of respite at the Fall Festival and
the Spring Carnival.
Research & Evaluation
Prior to implementation, each
community project undergoes a
thorough research, analysis, design
and testing process to ensure that
our volunteers, our donors, and
our clients receive the maximum
impact. For existing community
projects, we collaborate with and
survey our current nonprofit
partners and seek guidance from
our Community Advisory Board to
make the projects more effective
and ultimately better able to serve
our Tampa Bay community.
New for Fiscal Year 2009
The Junior League of Tampa is
pleased to launch a new
community project focused on
addressing food insecurity
experienced by children at the
Wilbert Davis-Belmont Heights
Boys & Girls Club.
The League has officially
incorporated the Association of
Junior Leagues International, Inc.’s
Kids in the Kitchen event as a
community project. This project
provides health and nutrition
education to disadvantaged
children. Last year, the project
was expanded to include two
public schools in Hillsborough
County reaching over 300 children.
We also seek to provide
disadvantaged children access to
the future Glazer Children’s
Museum by pledging funds to the
new museum and committing
future volunteers to the project.

Strengthening Communities Across Tampa
Academy Prep Center
of Tampa
Skills for life. Our volunteers teach a
social skills program for students at
Academy Prep Center of Tampa, a
private, nonprofit middle school for
inner-city children who qualify for
need-based scholarships and who
have the desire to succeed in a
rigorous academic program.
Children’s Cancer Center
A brighter day. We sponsor and
staff a Fall Festival and Spring
Carnival, which each draw crowds
of more than 200 people whose
lives have been touched by cancer.
For children who are newly
diagnosed with cancer, we assemble
special love bundles with items that
the children can use while at the
hospital for treatments.
Children’s Literacy
Project
My own library. We send trained
volunteers into kindergarten
classrooms at Hillsborough County
Title I schools to conduct
storytelling sessions and give each
child 16 books per year to take
home. Support materials are also
distributed to the classrooms for
hands-on experiences with
literature.
Community Action
Helping hands. Junior League of
Tampa members provide funding
and hands-on volunteer service in
the community to qualified agencies
for short-term or one day projects
or events.
Connected by 25
Extending the connection. We
assist Connected by 25 with
preparing foster children, ages 13 to
17, for adulthood and life after
foster care. We also sponsor events
to allow the older youth to
reconnect with their younger
siblings who reside with other
families.
DACCO
Building healthy families. Our
volunteers will implement a training
program to help women, who are
moving beyond drug addiction, build
healthy family relationships, maintain
a donated clothing closet, and
financially assist with new
construction.
Food 4 Kids
Filling empty bellies. The League
provides food for all children
enrolled in the Kids’ Café program at
the Wilbert Davis-Belmont Heights
Boys and Girls Club to eat over
weekends and holidays when the
meals they typically receive at school
and at the club are not available.
Glazer Children’s
Museum
Building for the future. The Junior
League of Tampa pledged $250,000
to support the construction of the
new museum. Once it opens, we
will give volunteer hours focused on
providing museum access and
programming to disadvantaged
children.
Hope Prep
Hands-on learning for students that
need it most. We provide four
classes, from preschool to
5th grade, with learning centers
unique to each grade level’s needs
and volunteers to facilitate the
activities.
Kids Connect
Find a forever family. Our
volunteers plan, coordinate and
facilitate two events each year that
provide a fun, natural environment
for hard-to-place foster children and
prospective parents to meet and
spend quality time together.
Kids in the Kitchen
Fighting childhood obesity. By
promoting family health through
innovative, fun programming like
Kids in the Kitchen, The Junior
League of Tampa continues to build
on a tradition of involvement in
important community matters.
Love Bundles
Labor of love. Our volunteers
provide children in foster care and
protective custody with special
backpacks containing essential
developmental items and immediate
needs. Each year, virtually every
child removed from his or her
home receives one of our Love
Bundles.
Mary Lee’s House
A safe haven. We continue our
support of this center where
children, who have been abused,
receive comprehensive assessments
and services ‘under one roof’
ensuring that they are not
traumatized again by the systems
designed to protect them.
Treasures for Tampa
Fulfilling needs. A transformation of
the former Thrift Sale into a
community service project,
Treasures for Tampa volunteers
collect, sort, and distribute member
merchandise donations to
community organizations with
specific needs.
