1. Introduction 

1.1. Purpose of the document 

The purpose of this document is to provide a summary of operational activities within the 

reporting period and to outline the initial operations activities. A summary of User Help Desk 

(UHD) activities is given. 

1.2. Reporting period 

The reporting period for this 2nd operations report 2006 covers April until June 2006 concerning 

CM-SAF version 1 and version 2 products. 

1.3. Major achievements 

AVHRR-based clouds and surface radiation products as well as SEVIRI based products are 

available for the reporting period. Top of the Atmosphere and Humidity composite products were 

also provided continuously. 

All re-processed products of CM-SAF version 2 (back to September 2005) are available via the 

CM-SAF web user interface. 

1.4. Applicable and Reference Documents 

The predominant part of the CM-SAF documents are so called 'living documents' that means 

they are more or less under permanent revision. The most current version of the documents

2. Status of deliverable products 

Operational CM-SAF products shall be available for distribution within 6 weeks to two month 

after the acquisition of the corresponding satellite input data. Table 1 shows the availability and 

completeness of the CMSAF products (version 1) concerning the reporting period.

Within the framework of quality management of DWD the following key figures were defined: 

Availability of products (Product Availability; PA): 

According to the user requirements the generation and archiving of CM-SAF products 

shall be completed within 60 days (2 months) after the end of the time interval for which 

the product is valid (target date). 

PA = target date – date of availability; 

target date=60 

That means PA=60 corresponds to a real time processing and is the maximum value.

Completeness of products (Product Completeness; PC): 

The key figure PC describes the percentage of the availability of all products for one 

month according to the list of products two months thereafter (e.g., the completeness of 

the products for the month of January will be checked on 1 st of April)

According to the CMSAF requirements the customer has to get a response on the 

request within 5 working days at the latest. 

Response time to customer request (Response Time; RT):

Whereas the maximum number of working days according CMSAF requirements = 5. 

Table 3 contains the quality management ratios of CMSAF broken down into the different work 

packages. Since September 2005 CM-SAF version 1 and 2 has been considered. 

The negative values of the product availability index (PA) for the products at the top of the 

atmosphere in November and December 2005 are caused by the late availability of CERES 

data. Also on this account the TOA products are not yet available for the reporting period and PA 

and PC could not be calculated for April, May and June 2006.

5. Main anomalies 

The products at the top of the atmosphere are not yet available for the reporting period because 

of the late availability of CERES data and the implementation of software version 1.1 (new 

release of GERB data and implementation of the aerosols treatment over ocean). The TOA 

products of the new version will be expected in September 2006. 

6. Interaction with users, users feedback 

6.1. Description of implemented UHD services 

The User Help Desk support is based on an open service area of the specific CM-SAF web site, 

which acts as the single entry point for the users interface. The User Help Desk provides 

information and services to the CM-SAF user community and supports the gathering of the 

feedback from users needed to improve the CM-SAF services. The following services are 

provided by the Help Desk: 

• E-Mailbox and FAQ list 

o 

The e-mail box shall help to solve problems and collect questions of the users with 

CM-SAF products. Besides this it is expected that users will place requirements and 

proposals in order to improve the service and the products here. In the course of the 

time of regular processing of CM-SAF it is anticipated to collect questions in FAQ lists 

which shall be updated regularly (at present not yet available). The UHD is also 

accessible via phone or fax. 

• Feedback/User Problem Report 

o 

The user has the possibility to make a feedback either via the contact e-mail box or 

by filling in the form “User Problem Report (UPR). The UPR form and the contact e- 

mail box are available on the CM-SAF web page. 

• Service messages 

o 

The CM-SAF web page “Service messages” provides current information concerning 

the provision of CM-SAF products to the users. This regards announcements to new 

products or services as well as messages about technical problems or the quality of 

products.

• Change log 

o 

The CM-SAF web page “change log” informs the user on the versioning approach of 

the CM-SAF products. 

• Add on products and tools 

o Additional tools for using CM-SAF products are provided on the page “Add on 

products and tools” to make the access more comfortable. 

• Access to CM-SAF technical documentation 

o 

This is a section for viewing or downloading CM-SAF documentation relevant for the 

end users e.g. User Manual - Products, Science Plan, Prototype Reports, Data 

Output Formats. 

• CM-SAF Scientific Developments 

o 

Here information on the scientific developments and plans as well as reports of 

product improvements and validation results are provided. 

The Help Desk availability is based on a working-hours-five-days-a-week service. Once the 

communication has been received, the User Help Desk team acts as a broker and answers user 

inquiries itself or forwards the inquiries to those having the according expertise within the CM- 

SAF team. Whereas an immediate electronic response will be generated to notify the user of the 

inquiry receipt, the full reply shall be provided within 10 working days. The inquiry and the replies 

are collected in a dedicated database in order to compile a list of frequently asked question 

(FAQ). 

6.2. User statistics 

The Help Desk User Support is based on a dedicated IOP CM-SAF web site, which will act as 

the single entry point for the web users interface (WUI). When ordering products the users will 

gain access by means of a password. The Help Desk intends to provide information and 

services to CM-SAF users, as well as to support the gathering of the feedback from users 

needed to improve the CM-SAF services. Therefore a template for a user's problem report 

(UPR) is available from the web site in order for a user to depict the problems he/she has with 

the CM-SAF products, CM-SAF operation or suggestions for improvements of the CM-SAF 

system.

6.3. Formal UHD requests 

During the reporting period 12 inquiries to the CM-SAF User Help Desk were registered. All 

questions were sent by e-mail. The user received a replay within 1 working days in the majority 

of cases. 

The requests covered different technical aspects of the registration and ordering procedure as 

well as scientific issues of the products. 

The temporal distribution of CM-SAF User Help Desk inquiries in the second quarter in 2006 is 

shown in figure 3:

6.4. User Problem Reports 

User Problem Reports were not raised during the reporting period. 

7. Provision of CM-SAF products 

CM-SAF products are provided via Web User Interface (WUI). The following figure demonstrates 

which CM-SAF products were ordered by the users during the reporting period (April – June 

2006).

In addition to formal orders of products via WUI the colleagues of the CM-SAF also received 

requests about CM-SAF products which are not available on the web. This concerns 

instantaneous CM-SAF products as well as products of different time periods or special formats.

8. Interactions with EUMETSAT 

CMSAF members have continuous contact with EUMETSAT. Beside the 

direct email contacts between the CMSAF and EUMETSAT colleagues, representatives of 

CMSAF visited the following events: 

• 8.5.2006: SIRR-V3 Checkpoint Meeting, Offenbach, Germany 

• 15.-17.5.2006: EPS/RAO Workshop, Frascati, Italy, Project No:2895 

• 17.-19.5.2006: 23rd IASI Sounding Science Working Group, Frascati, Italy 

• 12.-16.6.2006: EUMETSAT Satellite Conference, Helsinki, Finland 

• 22.06.2006: EUMETSAT and CM-SAF meeting in preparation of the 

"EUMETSAT/WMO Workshop in the Use of Satellite Data for Climate Applications", 

which will be held in Zagreb, Croatia, from 11 to 15 December 2006 (The CM-SAF 

actively supports the workshop.), Offenbach, Germany 

• 29.6.: Trilateral meeting between CM-SAF, LMD and EUMETSAT Met Division (“Water 

vapour retrieval, validation and climate analysis using SEVIRI data”), Offenbach,

9. Technical notes 

The operational routine CMSAF version 1 at DWD runs on an IBM Power 5 machine (cos1). 

The system software is AIX 5.3 

Disk space on the COS1: 

There is 500GB disk space available on the COS1 (user routcm). 

The products at the top of the atmosphere are operationally processed at RMIB on a DIGITAL 

alpha server with adequate disk space.

The operational processing chain of CM-SAF version 2 is implemented on an IBM Power 4+ 

machine (rus4). 

The system software is AIX 5.2 

The available online disk space amounts to 500 GB. 

A 3TB-NAS system is available (500 GB is provided for operations and 2,5 TB for development). 

The 3TB-NAS system is mounted under the RUS4 and under cos1.
