Reconciliation
Janet Tam
F. 4F
Drenched, soya milk dripping down my face, I glared
straightly into the eye of a girl who was laughing hysterically at me
with the milk carton in her hand. I felt a great rush of blood to my
head. I really wanted to slap her in the face, but I knew it would
not help the least.
She, Erin Haylette, was a famous bully at school and
unfortunately, I had been her target for the last few weeks. Being
locked up in the locker’s room, tripped and falling face down on
my tray of tomato-sauced meatball noodles and anything one could
dare think of, I would have given her the pain of her life if it had
not been for my Christian belief.
Anyway, there I was, still standing in a puddle of soya milk
formed by the drips from my dark brown hair. Out of the blue, the
who-should-not-be-named head discipline teacher stepped out
from behind me and grabbed Erin by the collar of her uniform. All
the girls were watching and I knew the teacher was taking her to
the you-know-where room, but I still saw Erin grimacing at me. I
shivered.
My two best girl friends, Jessa and Meri, helped me dry
myself in the bathroom, not saying a word. I knew they were
scared and furious. If it had not been for the icy cold drink she had
poured on me, my blood pressure would not have cooled down and
I would have thrown my fist at her jaw right away, and found
myself being dragged to the you-know-where room also. I
shivered again. I remembered others saying that the room had a
google of canes hung on the walls waiting dearly for spankings.
One girl had told me she had seen a rough rigid metal cane right
behind the discipline teacher’s desk shimmering with rays of light,

seeming to want a bum from her. I, then, smiled at the thought of
Erin in that room. “Amen,” I said aloud.
Days passed, and shockingly, nothing happened. That should
be a good thing. However, what if she was planning to do
something horrible to me I thought as I stepped into the toilet. We
never knew what her devious mind was thinking.
Sniff, sniff. Somebody was crying. It was Erin. Oh no!
This might be a trick, I thought, but I could not help myself from
comforting her. I did not know what happened until I saw her
holding a pregnancy tester. It was positive. She told me she had
been raped.
I was more than shocked. I stuttered when I had a word with
her. I knew this was not a trick. It was real and I had to do
something about it.
For the next few days, I saw her sobbing in the hallways. I
could not stand to see anybody like that. I finally pulled myself
together and presented myself in person in front of our school
principal. The problem was not mine, but I was the only person
who could help my enemy. In front of the anxious principal, I
blurted out all I knew. I was still afraid to know if I was doing the
right thing, but the principal told me she would take care of it.
Days later, Erin walked up to me, thanking me. A miracle,
wasn’t it I was told the person who ‘did’ something to her was
caught. It was difficult to express the joy I relished at that
moment! Who would have thought I would feel such a way in
front of a girl who was so offensive to me a month ago We
eventually helped each other out all the time and that was how I
became friends with the person who had been my greatest enemy.
