Understanding Successful Trenchless Pipeline Rehabilitation
And Renovation Methods
Renovation is where Trenchless Technology originally began, way back in the
1970s. Someone came up with the idea of putting a resin impregnated sock in a
sewer, and eventually found a client who didn’t think he was crazy. With perfect
hindsight we know that this technique, now generally referred to as ‘cured-inplace-pipe’
or CIPP, has become the most popular method of sewer renovation
worldwide, and that he wasn’t crazy at all.
But please spare a thought for the early No-Dig proponents whose refusal to be
daunted
by scepticism we can all benefit from today.
This short workshop will take you on a journey through:
• The clear definitions of the 4 ‘Rs’ rehabilitation, repairing, replacing and
renovating
• Understanding rehabilitation processes
• Identifying relevant replacement, renovation and repair technologies in the
ME region
• Effective renovation design systems
• Environmental aspects
Supporting Association
International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association – ITA-AITES
Founded in 1974, the ITA is based in Lausanne, Switzerland and counts 55 Member Nations
amongst its membership. The association aims to further the use of underground space
within the context of societal needs, environmental concerns, sustainable development and climate change.
Since its origin, ITA, in order to improve training of technical experts and engineers and arrange international
exchanges, has set up working groups on different topics such as research, contractual practices, health & safety,
immersed tunnels, mechanized or conventional tunnelling. Recently, ITA and its members have identified
three major concerns regarding the future of underground space use and tunnelling. The first concerns the
need for underground operational safety. Only through maintaining the highest safety standards can the use
of underground space be possible. Secondly there is a growing concern regarding the availability of educated
professionals. Thirdly ITA is concerned about the lack of awareness regarding the benefits of underground
space use and also the lack in developing a local vision on using underground space and planning the use. To
address all three concerns, committees have been installed by ITA: the ITA Committee on Operational Safety
of Underground Facilities (ITACOSUF), the ITA Committee on Education (ITACET) and the ITA Committee on
Underground Space (ITACUS).
IKT – Institute for Underground Infrastructure
IKT is a neutral, independent and non-profit research institute. It is oriented towards
practical applications and works on issues surrounding underground pipe construction.
Its key focus is centred on sewage systems. IKT provides scientifically backed surveys and
advice.
IKT’s main activities are:
• research and testing aiming at technical innovative, high-quality, client and environmental friendly,
economically sustainable underground utility infrastructure;
• to provide research results and insights for an environmental and citizen-oriented construction,
renovation and maintenance of public utility networks.
• to help private companies develop new products by way of modern material tests;
