DYNAMIC KIDNEY SCAN
NHS Trust
The following information is to help you understand
about a Dynamic Kidney Scan.
It is general information and does not relate to your
individual care, for example, the risks to you may differ
slightly from those detailed. Your doctor should explain
the risks and benefits to you and you should make any
decision about your treatment after listening to these and
discussing any concerns you may have with your doctor.
A space is provided on leaflet for you to note down any
questions you may wish to ask. Please bring this leaflet
with you to your next hospital appointment.
There are several car parks in the hospital, however, we
recommend that you allow time to park your car before
your appointment.
What is a Dynamic Kidney Scan
This is a test in which a small amount of radioactivity is
used to obtain pictures of your kidneys and how they
function. This type of test does not usually take more
than one hour to complete.
What is involved
You will have an injection into a vein in your arm,
rather like a blood test. This injection will make your
kidneys show up on the scan.
During the scan you will be asked to lie still on a bed,
or sit on a chair, while we take pictures of your
kidneys. This part of the examination may take up to
30 minutes.
Children are welcome to bring a favourite DVD to
watch while the examination takes place.
If the injection takes some time to be filtered out of
the blood by your kidneys, we may give you another
small injection, which will help your kidneys to work.
DYNAMIC KIDNEY SCAN
NHS Trust
Once the scan is complete you will be asked to go and empty your bladder, one further
picture is then taken and you are free to go home.
Sometimes we may ask you to pass urine while we continue to take pictures; this is
called a MICTURATING CYSTOGRAM.
Do I need to prepare for the scan
Eat and drink as normal. Please contact the department if you are taking water tablets
(diuretic) before the day of your appointment as we may have to stop them before the
scan.
Will it hurt
Only the pinprick of the injection may hurt a little. You will not feel any ill effects from
the injection. It does not make you drowsy.
Is the radiation dangerous
The amount of radiation you receive is small. It is similar to that from an X-ray
examination of your lower back and hips.
Do I need to do anything after the scan
You can eat, drink and go where you wish. You will be asked to drink more than usual
for the rest of the day so that we can make sure that there is no radioactivity left in
your urine.
Please avoid close contact with other children and pregnant women for the rest of the
day. Close contact means having a child sit next to the patient for more than half an
hour.
What happens to the result of the scan
Our consultant will send a report to the doctor who requested the scan. The
radiographer will not be able to tell you the results at the time of the scan.
Can I bring a friend or relative with me
We would welcome this as long as they are not young children or pregnant.
Due to Ionising Radiation Regulations, only patients are allowed in the scanning room.

Children must not be left unaccompanied whilst in the X-ray department. If the child is
the patient then obviously parents may accompany them into the scanning room.
