JAPANESE 3: FIRST YEAR JAPANESE III (THIRD QUARTER)<br />
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA BARBARA<br />

Prerequisite: Japanese 2 with C or above or instructor's approval.<br />
I. COURSE OBJECTIVES<br />
This course aims to develop communicative skills based on the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> grammar,<br />
vocabulary <strong>and</strong> conversational expressions. Students will acquire:<br />
i) Speaking <strong>and</strong> listening pr<strong>of</strong>iciency to carry out simple everyday conversation,<br />
ii)<br />
<strong>iii</strong>)<br />
Reading skills to underst<strong>and</strong> short, simple written materials, <strong>and</strong><br />
Writing skills to be able to write short letters, advertisements <strong>and</strong> short essays using<br />
appropriate Hiragana <strong>and</strong> Katakana scripts <strong>and</strong> about 193 Chinese characters.<br />
Note: We will cover Lessons 11 <strong>and</strong> 12 in Volume I <strong>and</strong> Lessons 13 - 15 in Volume II <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Genki textbooks .<br />

VII. POLICIES<br />
1. Attendance<br />
1) Your <strong>first</strong> three absences will not be counted against your grade regardless <strong>of</strong> the reason.<br />
2) Absence from 10 or more classes will automatically reduce the highest possible final grade<br />
to C-.<br />
3) Absence from 20 or more classes will result in a grade <strong>of</strong> F.<br />
4) Three late arrivals to the class or leaving the class early count as one absence.<br />
5) If you miss a class meeting, please get h<strong>and</strong>outs before the next class. You can find them in<br />
the box marked "1st <strong>year</strong> Japanese" by the door <strong>of</strong> HSSB #2233 (TA Office).<br />
2. Homework submission<br />
1) Your <strong>first</strong> three missed homework assignments will not be counted against your grade.<br />
2) Homework is due the day after the assigned date. Late homework (including submission<br />
after class) will not get any credit.<br />
Make sure <strong>of</strong> the following, otherwise you will NOT get any credit.<br />
1) Leave homework on the instructor’s desk at the beginning <strong>of</strong> class.<br />
2) For xerox copies, papers with the same homework number should be stapled together. Do<br />
not staple separate number homework together.<br />
3) Write the homework number on the top <strong>of</strong> the homework sheet.<br />
3. Quizzes<br />
1) No make-up quizzes will be given.<br />
2) Your lowest quiz score from the vocabulary <strong>and</strong> kanji quizzes will be disregarded.<br />
3) The scores <strong>of</strong> your grammar quizzes will not be dropped.<br />
4. Oral performance <strong>and</strong> oral final (interview)<br />
1) No make-up will be given.<br />
2) An oral performance <strong>and</strong> an oral final will be given on the day designated on the schedule.<br />
5. Examinations (Mid-term exam & Final exam)<br />
1) No make-ups will be given.<br />
2) If you are taking other language courses concurrently <strong>and</strong> have time conflict for the final<br />
exam, please ask your instructor to make an arrangement for the early final exam.<br />
3) The final examination must be taken on the scheduled date <strong>and</strong> time at the designated place<br />
Saturday, June 7, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM. Place to be announced.<br />

6. Grade<br />
This course can be taken for a letter grade only. No auditing is allowed.<br />
7. Plagiarism<br />
Copying someone’s homework or cheating on quizzes <strong>and</strong> exams are considered to be serious<br />
violations <strong>of</strong> academic honesty. Telling other students in the later sections about what is on the<br />
quizzes <strong>and</strong> exams is also considered plagiarism. As a consequence <strong>of</strong> these acts, you might fail this<br />
course.<br />
8. Cell phone policies<br />
CELL PHONE USE IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED IN CLASS. Turn <strong>of</strong>f your cell phone in class.<br />
1) If you look at your cell phone during quizzes <strong>and</strong> exams, it will be considered “cheating” <strong>and</strong> as a<br />
result you will FAIL the quiz or exam. No exception. (We are 100% serious.)<br />
2) If we see you using the cell phone during the class, we will ask you to leave the classroom<br />
immediately <strong>and</strong> you will be marked as absent for the lesson.<br />
9. Others<br />
