Overview
It’s Never Too Late
by Parag Mehta
The Indian elevator industry is the
second largest in the world and is growing
at an impressive rate. However, it
has a unique distribution of traction and
hydraulic elevators, uncommon in other
places around the developed world. In
Europe, for example, hydraulic elevators
had a market share of more than
40% until 1998-2000, while in the U.S.,
that number was even higher. However, the total number
of hydraulic elevators operating in Europe is 25%.
For years, traction/machine-room-less elevators have
dominated the Indian elevator industry. The hydraulic-elevator
industry used to rely heavily on industrial valves
and components to face problems, as installations would
often malfunction and offer poor ride quality. This also
was responsible for earning a bad reputation, with the
general conception, “Hydraulics do not work!” The current
scenario is different. With increasing awareness
about the cost effectiveness of hydraulic elevators in lowrise
buildings, and safe egress during earthquakes and
other natural disasters, availability of technical knowhow
and the right components for hydraulic elevators, the
market share has been steadily growing.
Today, hydraulic installations are not restricted to lowrise
residential buildings and bungalows, they are also
seen in car-parking, goods and mobile applications, to
name a few. There are numerous global hydraulic component
and elevator manufacturers present in India, giving
the industry a wide range of products and competitiveness.
From mechanical valves to servo-electronic and
variable-voltage, variable-frequency (VVVF) solutions,
customers have many options.
In the coming years, VVVF hydraulic elevators can gain
more popularity due to their unique advantages over conventional
installations. A VVVF solution is not only energy
efficient, but also offers wide pressure and temperature
compensation. The fact that it can be installed in places
where two to three times high in-rush current is not available
in the starting phase would make it an ideal choice
for home lifts.
The myths associated with the Indian hydraulic-elevator
industry are gradually changing, and people are realizing
the true advantages associated with hydraulic elevators.
Thousands of installations functioning all over
India prove that a correctly designed hydraulic-elevator
system with the right components can meet the challenges
of warm temperatures without causing problems.
An average growth rate of more than 60% per annum in
the last 10 years further endorses the success and popularity
in low-rise installations.
Although late, the hydraulic-elevator industry is slowly
catching on in the Indian market and shows a promising
future.
