ACTIVITIES OF ORISSA STATE LEGAL SERVICES AUTHORITY<br />
1. Lok Adalats<br />
(i) At State Level<br />
During the period from <strong>April</strong>, <strong>2013</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>June</strong>, <strong>2013</strong>, 04 State Level Lok Adalats were held one each<br />
at Bhubaneswar, Bhadrak, Puri and Balasore on 20.4.<strong>2013</strong>, 27.4.<strong>2013</strong>, 4.5.<strong>2013</strong> and 22.6.<strong>2013</strong> respectively,<br />
in which, 757 number of cases were disposed of which consisted Matrimonial -284 and MACT-473. A sum<br />
of Rs.9,25,73,147/- was awarded as compensation in the above MACT cases.<br />
Further, a Special State Level Lok Adalat for disposal of matrimonial and other cases was also held<br />
at Balasore on 20.4.<strong>2013</strong>, wherein, in <strong>to</strong>tal 2047 number of cases were disposed of on conciliation which<br />
comprised of Civil-440, Compoundable Criminal cases-1219, Matrimonial-385 and MACT-03. A sum of<br />
Rs.1,28,590/- <strong>to</strong>wards Criminal fine was realized in the above Criminal cases and Rs.6,45,000/- was<br />
awarded as compensation in the MACT cases.<br />
(ii) At <strong>High</strong> <strong>Court</strong> Level<br />
During the above period, the <strong>High</strong> <strong>Court</strong> Legal Services Committee has organized<br />
a Mega Lok Adalat on 06.4.<strong>2013</strong> in the <strong>High</strong> <strong>Court</strong> Premises in which, 181 number of cases have been<br />
disposed of which consisted of Mo<strong>to</strong>r Accident Claim Appeals-86, Land Acquisition Cases-14 and OJC/<br />
W.P.(c)-81. A sum of Rs.2,76,61,000/- has been awarded <strong>to</strong>wards compensation in the above Mo<strong>to</strong>r<br />
Accident Claim Appeals.<br />
(iii) At District & Taluk Levels<br />
During the above period, 186 no.of District and Taluk Level Lok Adalats have been organized in the<br />
State of Odisha by the field units i.e. 30 District Legal Services Authorities and 73 Taluk Legal Services<br />
Committees. In the above District and Taluk Level Lok Adalats, in <strong>to</strong>tal 35,304 no.of cases have been<br />
disposed of which consisted of Civil-563, Compoundable Criminal Cases-17,790, Revenue-14,463<br />
Matrimonial-14 Bank-2187, BSNL-180 , Labour-02, Consumer-02 and MACT- 103. A sum of Rs.25,05,033/<br />
- <strong>to</strong>wards Criminal fine and Rs.71,32,394/- as Revenue have been collected in the said Lok Adalats.<br />
Further, a sum of Rs.2,16,27,500/- has been awarded <strong>to</strong>wards compensation in the above Mo<strong>to</strong>r Accident<br />
Claim Cases.<br />
2. Permanent Lok Adalats(PUS)(U/s.22-B of the L.S.A.Act.,1987)<br />
During the above quarter, 359 number of cases relating <strong>to</strong> Public Utility Services were registered<br />
in the Thirteen Permanent Lok Adalats, out of which, 331 no. of cases were disposed of.<br />
3. Activities of Mediation Centres<br />
Training and Awareness Programmes<br />
With a view <strong>to</strong> evaluate the impact of mediation training and awareness programmes, the Mediation<br />
& Conciliation Project Committee, Supreme <strong>Court</strong> of India has selected Berhampur and Puri in Odisha<br />
for the pilot programme.<br />
A ‘one day discussion programme’ was held at Berhampur on 13.4.<strong>2013</strong> and Puri on 14.4.<strong>2013</strong><br />
respectively involving the Referral Judges, Advocate-Media<strong>to</strong>rs and Co-ordina<strong>to</strong>r and staff of Mediation<br />
Centre. The above programme was graced by Hon’ble Mr.Justice Madan B.Lokur, Judge, Supreme <strong>Court</strong><br />
of India & Member, MCPC.
