Food Security<br />
More than half of <strong>Zambia</strong>ns are classified as extremely<br />
poor and unable to meet minimum nutritional needs. 47<br />
The situation is particularly endemic in the rural areas,<br />
where attaining appropriate levels of food security is an<br />
ongoing challenge.<br />
LAND USE<br />
420,000km 2 out of <strong>Zambia</strong>’s 752,000km 2 of land<br />
area is classified as medium to high agricultural<br />
potential, but only 15 percent of the total land area is<br />
cultivated 48 and only 45,980km 2 (6 percent) is under<br />
crop production at one time, as the vast majority of<br />
<strong>Zambia</strong>’s traditional farmers practice land rotation<br />
(estimates range that 6-9 percent of the country<br />
may actually be laying fallow). Of the total land area,<br />
307,080 km 2 is forested 49 and <strong>Zambia</strong> has the 2 nd<br />
highest area of forested lands with high population<br />
densities (60 ha) enjoy high<br />
mechanization and effective supply chain<br />

Low production yields among <strong>Zambia</strong>n farmers<br />
have been attributed to four major factors: low<br />
access to technology and information, low access<br />
to markets (property rights, standards, contract law,<br />
adjudication, market facilities, market price and<br />
supply information, marketing extension), lack of<br />
infrastructure (roads, irrigation, rural electrical power,<br />
ports, communications), and poor access to inputs. 55<br />
