is fidelity to <strong>the</strong> charism of <strong>the</strong><br />

Congregation, to <strong>the</strong> teaching and<br />

spirit of St. Paul of <strong>the</strong> Cross, which he<br />

represented during <strong>the</strong> ten years he governed <strong>the</strong><br />

Congregation, in addition to his simple life style, humble,<br />

meek and benevolent with everyone, represent <strong>the</strong><br />

spiritual treasury he entrusted to those who knew<br />

him”. Thus began <strong>the</strong> article in <strong>the</strong> Rome Diocesan<br />

Newspaper, “Roma Sette”, which reported on <strong>the</strong><br />

opening ceremony of <strong>the</strong> Diocesan Inquiry into <strong>the</strong> life<br />

and virtues of Fa<strong>the</strong>r Theodore Foley, C.P., Superior<br />

General of <strong>the</strong> Congregation of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Passio</strong>n of our<br />

Lord Jesus Christ during <strong>the</strong> years of 1964-1974.<br />

The Diocesan Inquiry, an important phase on <strong>the</strong><br />

road to beatification and canonization, was opened on<br />

Friday, May 9, 2008 in <strong>the</strong> Hall of Conciliation (Hall<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Concordat) in <strong>the</strong> Lateran Palace. Camillo<br />

Cardinal Ruini, <strong>the</strong> Holy Fa<strong>the</strong>r’s Vicar for <strong>the</strong><br />

Diocese of Rome, presided at <strong>the</strong> ceremony. Assisting<br />

at <strong>the</strong> ceremony were <strong>the</strong> officials who will play a<br />

major role in <strong>the</strong> Inquiry: Monsignor Gianfranco<br />

Bella, Delegate Judge, Monsignor Giuseppe Alonzo,<br />

Promoter of Justice, Mr. Giuseppe Gobbi, Notary, and<br />

Mr. Antonio Tommaso, Chancellor.<br />

After a very brief note of welcome, Cardinal Ruini<br />

turned <strong>the</strong> meeting over to <strong>the</strong> Notary, who, in Latin,<br />

(L-R) Fr.Giovanni Zubiani, Postulator for <strong>the</strong> Cause; Fr. Dominic Papa (PAUL), Vice Postulator; Fr. Floriano De Fabiis,<br />

Procurator General; and members of <strong>the</strong> communities of Sts. John and Paul and Scala Santa.<br />
