Superior General, Fr.<br />

Ottaviano D’Egidio, as well<br />

as Fr. Clemente Barrón,<br />

General Consultor, and Fr.<br />

Donald Webber, CRUC<br />

Provincial Superior and Fr.<br />

Carlos San Martín, representing<br />

<strong>the</strong> FAM Province of<br />

Spain. Also taking part were<br />

Mo<strong>the</strong>r Guadalupe Aguilera<br />

CFP, <strong>the</strong> Superior General of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Daughters of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Passio</strong>n,<br />

Sr. Paula María Lucatero,<br />

CFP, Provincial of <strong>the</strong><br />

Sisters’ Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Province,<br />

and Mrs. Sara Elena Rios,<br />

General Consultor of <strong>the</strong> Secular Institute of <strong>the</strong><br />

Missionaries of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Passio</strong>n. There were 31 religious<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Province present, and 19 Laity, members of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Passio</strong>nist Family.<br />

Fr. Clemente Barrón, General Consultor, made<br />

<strong>the</strong> Canonical Visitation, meeting with all <strong>the</strong> religious<br />

individually as well as all <strong>the</strong> communities.<br />

He also met with three groups of laity, members of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Passio</strong>nist Family. In his report he stated that<br />

Mexico is a predominantly Catholic country composed<br />

of approximately 8 million inhabitants and is<br />

dealing with many complex political and social<br />

issues. The <strong>Passio</strong>nists have been present in<br />

Mexico from <strong>the</strong> USA since 1860 and despite many<br />

unsuccessful initial attempts to make a foundation,<br />

<strong>the</strong> religious of <strong>the</strong> CORI Province of Spain were<br />

able to establish <strong>the</strong> first Province. Currently <strong>the</strong><br />

REG Province is composed of 40 religious and<br />

seven communities. The religious are involved in a<br />

different ministries including formation, preaching,<br />

Fr. Ottaviano D’Egidio; Fr. José Antonio Barrientos, First Consultor.<br />

retreat and parochial ministry and individual<br />

ministries.<br />

In his opening remarks, Fr. Ottaviano stated that,<br />

“Mexico is historically and culturally a bridge<br />

between North and South America…Work still needs<br />

to be done to expand <strong>the</strong> experience of collaboration<br />

with <strong>the</strong> two Provinces of <strong>the</strong> USA in <strong>the</strong> area of pastoral<br />

opportunities that are present <strong>the</strong>re due to <strong>the</strong><br />

large Hispanic presence in that country. This would<br />

provide for an appropriate spiritual and cultural<br />

response. This is a missionary endeavor which,<br />

despite initial difficulties, should not be delayed nor<br />

abandoned. Discernment is needed so that it continues<br />

to be a part of <strong>the</strong> process of Restructuring in <strong>the</strong><br />

Congregation. The Province is conscious that it has<br />

to address <strong>the</strong> challenges at hand and make decisions<br />

about forms of presence, houses, ministries, formation<br />

and finances…An important decision in <strong>the</strong><br />

Province was that of accepting a mission in <strong>the</strong> state<br />

of Chiapas. In addition to an area for evangeliza-<br />
