Subject Matter Expert Best Practices
Dominion Electric Transmission
• 25 Subject Matter Experts for 39 standards (excluding CIP)
• SME’s time can vary in their involvement for NERC compliance. SME for
PRC-005 is 100% dedicated to compliance. SME for MOD-010 spends
about 10 to 15% of his time to compliance.
• Each standard is assigned a “primary” SME as well as a “back-up” SME
which is most cases is the responsible manager. In most cases, this will
also be the primary configuration for audit testimony.
• Most SME’s are considered “veterans’ with an average experience level of
25+ years. Succession planning for SME’s is quickly becoming an area of
focus for Dominion Electric Transmission.
