This course reviews the development of Contingency
Management (CM) treatments for substance use
disorders. It describes some of the initial treatment
studies of CM using vouchers as incentives, along with
lower cost alternatives. The recently completed National
Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network
study of this CM approach will also be detailed. The
video will depict use of CM techniques in practice. The
second half of the course reviews aspects of behavioral
therapy necessary to develop an effective CM approach
for practice. Viewers will be provided the opportunity
to develop their own CM program for use with unique
patients or within special populations.
Instructor Nancy Petry, Ph.D.
CEHs 5
MET-CBT is an engaging therapy approach combining
Motivational Enhancement Therapy and Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy. Therapists and counselors
looking for an effective brief intervention for treating
adolescents with substance use disorders are likely
to find this training beneficial. The workshop begins
with a fairly brief overview of MET and CBT, and how
they are implemented through this manual-guided
treatment. The remainder of this two-day workshop
focuses on opportunities to practice, discuss, and observe
demonstrations of this therapy using a variety of formats.
Instructor Susan Sampl, Ph.D.
Managed care companies, treatment providers, and
program evaluators use patient placement criteria to
ensure that clients are placed in the appropriate level
of care. This training examines the patient placement
criteria for clients with substance use disorders adopted
by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
