Emotional, Behavioral or Cognitive Conditions and Complications- No Problem
Gunther’s flat affect may be a direct result of his frequent marijuana use. He doesn’t appear to be
a suicide risk at this time. His impulsive behaviors, truancy, sneaking out and defiance at home
all appear related to and driven by his chemical use.
Readiness to Change-Moderate
Gunther is motivated primarily by his probation officer and fear of more legal problems. He
views his use as an answer to boredom. His tendency to minimize the amounts and frequeny of
his use would indicate he’s eager to present as if he does not have a problem. His recent
possession charge may have moved him into a contemplative stage of change.

Relapse, Continued Use or Continued Problem Potential-Substantial
Gunther has made a number of commitments to quit to his mother, PO and counselor, and hasn’t
demonstrated an ability to do so. He knows the peers and place where he’s most likely to use but
doesn’t have the motivation or skill to remove himself from these situations. His current period
of abstinence was prompted by a possession and a confrontational meeting with his probation
officer. Gunther appears to be demonstrating compliance which is consistent with his past
behavior. As reported by his mother these instances are typically maintained for a week or so
before his behavior escalates back in to the old patterns.
Recovery Environment-Substantial
Gunther meets his using friends at school and uses during the school day at lunch and after
school. He is in a home with a single parent who works full time. There isn’t consistent
supervision as a result. Gunther verbalizes his disappointment in letting down his mom but
continues to defy her rules and expectations. His standing reputation as a “partier” will make
development of new friendships and avoiding offers to use a challenge.
