With a projected need for 1.2 million nurses by 2012 and a shortage of active nurses in the field today, Walsh University is making every effort to advance its nursing program in the coming year. With remarkable growth in recent years through the expansion of its facilities, outreach efforts, resources and enrollment, Walsh has turned to its nursing program with plans already in place to raise program entry standards, implement an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) option and provide state-of-the-art technology in its labs to give students the experience they need. Raising Undergraduate Entry Standards The Walsh nursing program has raised the bar for entry in an effort to admit and retain a more qualified and successful undergraduate base. As of Fall of 2007, students entering the program are considered pre-nursing students. They are presented with basic prerequisite nursing courses with which they must achieve a GPA of 2.75 in order to be admitted into the program. “The purpose is for retention and success,” says Linda Linc, Chair of the Division of Nursing at Walsh University. “Students are taking this more seriously now. We’re getting students who work harder and come in better prepared with this format. Will we lose some students Yes. But with this format we won’t have a high attrition rate.” Accelerated BSN Option Recently approved by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), Walsh’s Nursing Division will also begin a newly designed accelerated BSN nursing option in May of 2009. Often equated to a second degree program, the accelerated track is open to individuals who already have a bachelor’s degree (of any kind) who wish to pursue a career in nursing. After recognizing the shortage of nurses around the country, responding to community interest and national trends in nursing and seeing what other schools have accomplished with an accelerated program, Walsh is eager to launch this unique accelerated program. “What we’re trying to accomplish with this program is to get more nurses out into the workforce in a shorter period of time,” says Linc. “The bottom line is that if you have a bachelor’s degree and if you come to us and you’ve completed the prerequisite courses, you will then complete the nursing content in only 15 months and graduate with a BSN degree. So rather than someone coming back and needing to spend another three or four years, we get these people out quickly, while maintaining the quality and rigor of the nursing curriculum.” In order to be eligible for the accelerated program, one must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited, fouryear institution of higher learning, meet Walsh University admission requirements, have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher from their earned degree, have a minimum of 3.0 or higher for the required prerequisite course work, complete the prerequisite courses and interview with the Division of Nursing Admissions Committee. International students must meet University admission requirements pertaining to the international student. Admission for the program will occur once a year in May. Currently, Walsh plans to accept 10-15 students in 2009 for the accelerated nursing option. Prior to the adoption of the accelerated track, nursing students who met prerequisite requirements entered Walsh’s nursing program at the sophomore level, requiring them to still undergo three years of study before they could complete the degree.
