Dear Parents and Guardians,
As our first school year closes, I would like to thank all students, parents and staff
for making Holy Cross a truly vibrant learning environment. If we reflect on the
vision to “build and support a community of learners that embraces the spiritual,
emotional, intellectual, physical and social well being of all,” and look at the
events and achievements from our first year together, I think we can say that we
are definitely on the right path. We have lived our mission of building
relationships; of creating and accepting challenges in a faith based community;
and participated in social justice opportunities in service of others.
On behalf of all the staff at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School, I would like
to wish you and your family a safe, relaxing and enjoyable summer holiday until
we meet again in September.

Fun Fair
Thank you to our Catholic School Council, all volunteers and staff who made our
first annual Fun Fair a huge success! Despite the cold temperatures, families
came out in large numbers to mingle and enjoy the activities. Special thanks to
those who donated items for the theme baskets, cakes and for door prizes. We
would also like to thank and recognize sponsors who made large donations.
Thank you to Crossgrove & Company Financial Services for donating 4 Blue
Jays tickets, Respect is Burning for donating ‘pasta for a year’ at the restaurant,
Mr. Dave Mallette for donating the hot dogs, Vrab’s Independent Grocer, the
Dambremont family for donating the minnows, Palladino Honda, Reg Wilkinson’s,
The Ultimate You, Albiani, Smith & Smith Optometrist, Cusinato Developments,
Karla’s Baskets, Monteleone’s Menswear, Tiffany Murray – RbC Mortgage
Specialist, Pampered Chef Consultants Pam Anderson & Christina Maurice,
She’s So Fine Esthetics, Bulk Barn, Scholar’s Choice and Mrs. Carol Walinga for
sewing 420 bandanas. Our profits for this event were just over $4,000.00. This
money will be used directly for students.

Walk For Cystic Fibrosis and Super Hero Day
We are very grateful to Dr. Kumar and his nurse Sherrie, for speaking to
the students and staff about what it is like to live with Cystic Fibrosis.
Students dressed as super heroes in honour of the true heroes that
battle this disease daily. Once again, our families need to be congratulated for
their generosity. We collected $825.00 in support of Cystic Fibrosis. This was
donated on May 26 th at the Walk for C.F. It was great to see so many students
and their families at this event.
Welcome to Kindergarten
A big Holy Cross welcome to all of our new Full Day Kindergarten
students who will be joining us in September. These new cubs came
out for an evening of activities on May 16 th that focused on school
readiness skills. We look forward to seeing these new additions in the
fall.
Spring Apparel
Please have your child dress appropriately for the weather. Layering at this time
of year is a good idea as the mornings are often cooler. Please remember that
clothes should be appropriate for the learning environment. Students are
expected to wear clothing that is respectful and modest. For example, students
in the junior grades should have tops that have straps that are at least three
fingers wide; shorts should be longer than a hand reach on the thighs; no midriffs
should be showing; there should not be extensive rips in pants. NO FLIP
FLOPS, as these are a safety issue.
Mass
Our last school mass of the year will be held on June 11 th at 9:30 a.m. Thank
you to Father Jim who made many visits to Holy Cross this year to speak with
students. We are extremely grateful for our partnership with St. Patrick’s Church
and for all they do to help develop spirituality and faith.
Track and Field
The board Track and Field Meet will be on June 12 th at Laurentian
University. In order to facilitate try-outs, we will have our own mini-track
meets at St. Benedict School. All Grade 5 and 6 students will participate
on Wednesday, June 5 th in the morning, and all grade 3 and 4 students
will participate on Thursday, June 6 th in the morning. Only students who
qualify, will go to the track meet at Laurentian.
Report Cards
All students will receive their report cards on June 25 th . Please sign and return
the appropriate section prior to the last day of school.

Holidays
The last day of school is Thursday, June 27 th . The first day of school is
September 3rd, 2013. Class lists will be finalized over the summer.
Teachers will be out in the schoolyard on the first day to gather their
students.
FDK Year End Celebration
All Full Day Kindergarten students would like to invite their parents to a
Year End Celebration on Tuesday, June 25 th at 1:30 p.m. in the gym.
Grade Six Graduation
Grade Six Graduation will be on Monday, June 24 th at 1:30 p.m. Due to
fire regulations and space restrictions, each graduate will be limited to 4
guests. Tickets will be sent home the week prior to graduation.
We extend our prayers and best wishes to all of our Grade Six students who will
be leaving Holy Cross.

Private music instruction is offered here at Holy Cross. Lessons will
resume again in September. Anyone wishing to sign up should call one
of the following qualified music teachers to guarantee a spot for the fall.

Volunteers
Thank you so much to each and every one of our volunteers. We
could not have had such a successful year without you. As we
look ahead to next year, please ensure that you have a valid
Criminal Background Check within the last 12 months, if you plan
to volunteer at the school or on field trips. This is in the interest of
students’ safety. Once you have provided this to Holy Cross, you may sign an
“Offence Declaration” each year rather than getting an new background check.

O God of all beginnings and endings,
We praise and thank you for the gift of this school year.
It has been a time filled with grace and blessings,
With challenges and opportunities, joys and sorrows.
The days have passed quickly, O Lord.
The weeks, the months, the seasons, the holidays and holy
days,
The exams, vacations, breaks, and assemblies,
All have come forth from your hand.
While we trust that your purposes have always been at
work each day,
Sometimes it has seemed difficult to understand and
appreciate
Just what you have been up to in our school.
Give us the rest and refreshment we need this summer.
Let our efforts of this past year bear fruit.
Bring all of our plans to a joyful conclusion,
And bless us, according to your will,
With the fulfillment of our summer hopes and dreams.
Watch over us in the weeks of rest ahead,
And guide each day as you have done this past year.
Help us return to school with a new spirit and a new
energy.
