Perioperative Management by
Surgical Information Systems
Answers for life.

Enterprise
connectivity
combined with depth of
perioperative expertise
The surgical suite is both the
biggest revenue source and largest
consumer of resources in the
healthcare enterprise. Its impact
on care quality and financial
performance makes the perioperative
environment a critical area of focus
in today’s healthcare organizations.
The Siemens perioperative
management solution connects
operating room clinicians,
administrators, and processes,
while providing interoperability
with the enterprise patient record.
The Siemens perioperative management solution
combines the depth of surgery and anesthesia know-how
of Surgical Information Systems (SIS) with the enterprise
healthcare IT expertise of Siemens. SIS offers the only
perioperative solution endorsed by the American Hospital
Association (AHA). Its anesthesia solution also received
the exclusive endorsement by the AHA, and its rules-based
charging capability and perioperative analytics tool have
been granted Peer Reviewed status by the Healthcare
Financial Management Association (HFMA).
Enabling information flow with Soarian
Interoperability and appropriate data exchange between
Soarian® and SIS will facilitate continuous flow of critical
patient information across the perioperative department
and throughout the enterprise.
This level of interoperability helps providers manage
the complete perioperative workflow—through admission,
pre-op, intra-op, post-op, and PACU, to post-intervention
monitoring as needed and to patient discharge.
Perioperative
Return on
Investment
Consulting services are available for assessing three core
benefit categories: cost savings, productivity gains, and
revenue gains. Typical areas where the greatest return
on investment is achieved include:
• Reduced cost per case due to less waste in materials.
• Improved charge capture, with charging driven by
the documentation process.
• Increased case loads due to efficiencies in scheduling,
booking, and resource utilization.
• Reduced documentation time.
This assessment helps demonstrate the positive financial
return yielded by the investment in the solution.
Leveraging perioperative analytics
for performance improvement
The solution’s business intelligence tools help analyze OR
utilization, case costs, supply costs, compliance with
Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) initiatives, and more.
• The perioperative view provides details for managing
OR efficiency, quality, and revenue. This helps providers
focus on key details such as room utilization, staff
productivity, and critical quality metrics.
• The executive view provides a higher level view of key
OR metrics, including costs analysis, revenue resource
utilization, and operational efficiency.
• The anesthesia view provides anesthesia-specific data to
help identify trends, monitor care delivery, and analyze
anesthesia-related outcomes.
Perioperative scheduling improves
resource utilization
The Siemens perioperative management solution provides
automated scheduling of surgical patients, procedures,
supplies, and personnel to streamline OR scheduling.
The solution helps hospitals better manage variables
such as surgeon availability, procedure time, and supplies
needed. It also includes preadmission testing (PAT)
scheduling, helping to ensure that the PAT schedule
is appropriately aligned to the surgical schedule.
To further support the scheduling processes, the solution’s
web access capability provides physicians and other
caregivers secure, remote access to their surgery
schedules and the ability to submit case requests.
Streamlined nursing documentation
means more time for patients
The solution covers the entire spectrum of the
perioperative process, from preadmissions to discharge.
It streamlines capture of critical patient information
including vital signs, anesthetic gases, and resources
used, including tissues, implants, and materials. This helps
standardize documentation, supports regulatory
compliance, and enables capture of all resources used
for accurate reimbursement.
Rules-based charging helps optimize reimbursement
By enabling more cost-effective supply chain management
and automating charge capture, the solution helps to
free up clinician time, which can help to improve
reimbursements and profitability.
Electronic data capture helps speed anesthesia
documentation turnaround
The anesthesia information management system (AIMS)
includes automated support for documentation recording
vital signs, record codes, modifiers, and professional
services. A graphical user interface helps anesthesiologists
quickly view case milestones, which medications were
administered, and when. With the AIMS fully integrated
with the surgery modules, anesthesiologists avoid
re-entry of information that already exists in the
perioperative record. This capability helps maximize
charge capture, facilitate timely and accurate billing, and
support regulatory compliance.
Visual patient tracking board displays
patient status at a glance
The solution’s tracking board contains event-driven status
updates that simplify communication of critical patient
information at each step in the perioperative process.
Available at a glance, this single reference point for up-tothe-minute
patient status information helps the team
coordinate efforts. This results in reduced phone calls,
pages, and more efficient staff time management.
Soarian
perioperative
workflows
Soarian’s advanced workflow
management technology helps
providers drive quality measures
in the perioperative care setting.
Perioperative workflows include 1 :
• Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) workflow,
which supports meaningful use (MU) requirements
by tracking appropriate antibiotic use during the
post-op course and reminding the physician to
discontinue antibiotics.
• “Notify Me” workflow, which notifies the clinician when
results are ready and when lab values are abnormal or
critical. For example, it monitors lab results for white
blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrict, platelets,
and temperature. Abnormal results trigger a notification
to a clinician.
• Inbound results or documentation, which triggers
a rule or workflow when the intra-op report is available
in Soarian.
Other house-wide workflows can be leveraged for
surgery and anesthesia:
• Urinary catheter workflow, which supports hospitalacquired
infection initiatives in post-op management.
• Venous thrombosis embolism (VTE) workflow, which
generates a notification based on patient data.
Not all Soarian perioperative workflows are model workflows
available from Siemens.
