Applying for a hall of residence
Many of the halls of residence
receive more applications than
they have places available, so it is
important that you make every
effort to send the best application
you can.
The halls are typically looking for a student
who is going to contribute to the activities of
the hall. They are looking for a well-rounded
student who is not only going to study hard but
has other interests to contribute, whether they
be sporting, musical or cultural. Therefore, it is
important that you list all your extra-curricular
activities in your application form and promote
yourself well.
For helpful application tips and FAQs go to
www.canterbury.ac.nz/accom/halls
Due dates for 2013
• Full year and Semester 1 applications open on
1 August 2012 and are due on 1 October 2012.
• Semester 2 applications are due on 1 May 2013.
Late applications will be considered if places are
still available.
How to apply
Your application is sent to your preferred
hall for consideration only after you have
completed both steps 1 and 2 below.
Step 1 – Complete an online application form at
www.canterbury.ac.nz/accom/halls/
If you do not have internet access, contact the
Accommodation Office.
If you are a returning student to the same hall or
another hall, please contact your hall directly as
an online application is not required.
Step 2 – Complete section (a), (b) or (c) below, as
appropriate:
(a) If you are an NZAID student or a student
on an approved Study Abroad or Exchange
programme, send an email to the
Accommodation Office confirming your
online application and your programme of
study. A reference form is not required.
(b) If you are a new international student
applying from overseas and would
like to accept a guaranteed offer in UC
Accommodation Student Village’s
self-catered apartments, send your
completed UC Accommodation Form
to the Accommodation Office.
(c) For all other students, a 2013 Common
Confidential Reference Form is required.
Your referee must submit the completed
form to the Accommodation Office on
your behalf.
Note: If you have applied to College House as your
preferred hall, additional documents are required –
go to www.collegehouse.org.nz for further details.
Application process
When you complete the registration details in
the online application, you will immediately
be sent an email that includes your username
and password. Use these to regularly
check the status of your application at
www.canterbury.ac.nz/accom/halls
When you have completed your online
application you will receive a confirmation
email. If you don’t receive this email, contact the
Accommodation Office as your application may
not have been submitted correctly.
After the application due date has passed, the
hall will either offer you a place, offer you a
place on their waitlist, or let you know that
you have been unsuccessful and return
your application to the Accommodation
Office. You will then be contacted to discuss
your accommodation options. For further
information about the application process go
to www.canterbury.ac.nz/accom/halls/
placement.shtml
Note: Ilam Apartments may process offers before
