Athletic Mouthguards
There are many different options that patients can
consider when choosing a mouthguard for themselves
or their children. Athletic mouth guards are
not “one size fits all” propositions. They should be
specifically prescribed and designed according to
many factors such as age of patient, sport being
played, level of competition, and previous history of
injury. This course will describe the different types
of athletic mouth guards in the market place and
provides information that will enable the dentist to
give patients the opportunity to make an informed
choice as to what they need for true protection.
While it focuses on fabrication techniques in the
dental office, the course will provide a dentist who
chooses to have mouth guards fabricated in a qualified
laboratory with information he/she needs to trim
and adjust the appliances more effectively.
Mouthguards for Temporomandibular Disorders
Oral appliances are often provided to patients with
TMJ pain and TMJ disorders where muscular or
intra-capsular derangements are present. These
appliances are used either during the day or depending
on the clinical indication and patient expectations.
The two fundamental types of appliances
are used to treat TMJ disorders which are either a
stabilizing splints and repositioning devices.
The fabrication and adjustments of different mouthguards
will be discussed including the importance
of patient clinical history and patient compliance
history.
Oral Appliances for Bruxism Sleep disorders
Management of bruxism sleep disorders with oral
appliance therapy can be complex, often requiring
numerous and lengthy office visits, which can be
frustrating for both the patient and the clinician.
This program will provide clinicians with a systematic
approach, from clinical assessment to management
of potential side effects will be presented and
discussed using evidence-based clinical cases.
