Saturday, 15th September at 7.30 p.m.). It is a well-loved musical, and the girls and boys involved
(from Otago Boys’ High School) have worked very hard to put on a quality production.

Direction is by David Corballis and Musical direction by Richard Madden (the same team that directed
“The Sound of Music” 2010 and “Oliver” 2008 – both very enjoyable productions).
National Secondary Schools’ RoboCup Championships
A great result from Columba’s team in the Premier Search and Rescue event with its second place
nationally. Warm congratulations to the students involved: Ailsa Carroll, Ryely Burtenshaw-Day, Holly
Hanson, Year 11 and Annabelle Ritchie, Year 9.
There were also two Columba students in the Independent team that was placed 2nd nationally in
Senior Dance: Annabelle Ritchie and Caroline Moratti in Year 9. Well done to this team as well.

Staff News
Mrs Chris Cheyne, BA, GradDipTch(Prim), AMusTCL has been appointed to a full-time permanent
position at Year 7 level, taking effect from the beginning of next year. Mrs Cheyne who has been on
our staff in a fixed term capacity up until now will continue as a Year 7 Form teacher and will teach
Year 7 English (both classes) and Years 7 and 8 Religious Studies (as well as one or two other
classes).
Mr Gary Corbishley, BA, DipTchg has been appointed to the full-time Year 8 position for 2013,
teaching mainly Social Studies but also possibly one or two English classes at secondary level. Mr
Corbishley who has been Acting HOD English this year (pending Miss Joanne Weggery’s
commencement as HOD English Years 7 to 13 next year) has a History major in his degree.
We have received with regret the resignation of Mrs Julia Anstey from her position as HOD
Languages and Classical Studies following her husband’s appointment to a Chair in Philosophy at
Sydney University. Mrs Anstey has been on the staff since 2007 and has been an excellent Head of
Department and teacher and will be missed by students and colleagues.
Mrs Janine Southby has confirmed her acceptance of the position of Coach of the Southern Steel
next year and has therefore to our regret resigned from her permanent part-time position at the
College (Mrs Southby has been on leave this year). We have therefore advertised a full-time fixed
term position in Physical Education at the College for 2013 (as well as a full-time fixed term position in
Mathematics for 2013). Mrs C. Nicol, Mathematics teacher, is likely to continue on maternity leave
into next year.

Confucius Classroom opened at Columba College
The first Confucius Classroom in the South Island of New Zealand has been established at Columba
College. The Confucius Classroom Opening Ceremony was held at the College on Friday, 29 th June.
China, through the Confucius Institute, has established non-profit public institutions which aim to
promote Chinese language and culture in foreign countries such as New Zealand. Three hundred and
sixty-nine Confucius Classrooms across ninety-six countries have been opened since 2004.
The Confucius Classrooms not only provide a place to teach Chinese language and culture but they
have also become a platform for cultural exchanges between China and other countries as well as a
means of encouraging friendship and co-operation between China and the rest of the world.
Dunedin City Councillor Mr Andrew Noone, on behalf of the Dunedin Mayor and Mr Xie Baoming, on
behalf of the Consul General of the P.R. China officially opened the classroom together. It was good to
welcome other distinguished guests to Columba College such as Professor Hong Hu and Dr Adam
Lam, Directors of the Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury and Ms Susan Bouterey,
Member of the Advisory Board of the Confucius Institute Canterbury, Mr Malcolm Wong, Chairman of
the Dunedin Shanghai Association, Mr Steven Spelman, President of Dunedin Branch of NZ China
Friendship Society, Dr Paola Voci, Senior Lecturer in Chinese at the University of Otago, Ms
Stephanie Evans, Division of Humanities at the University of Otago, and Dr Margot Skinner, Chairman
of the Columba College Board of Trustees.
Columba students and their teachers, Ms Ivy Ding and Miss Pan Chen, sang “Welcome to Columba”
in Chinese, to start the opening ceremony programme. After enjoying the students’ speeches, a flute
performance, singing and dancing programmes and a slide show of the recent school trip to China, the
Columba College Confucius Classroom was officially opened. Then the guests visited the new
Chinese Confucius classroom and saw a Chinese class in action.

Umbrellas with School Uniform
The Uniform Committee has approved an amendment to the regulation umbrella to be
used with school uniform.
In future, students may use plain navy blue or plain dark green umbrellas with school
uniform as well as plain black umbrellas.

Extra! Social Studies Quiz Results
The Year 8 Team of Helena Chen, Isabella Lau and Rebecca MacDonell was placed 2nd equal in the
Intermediate Competition with a score of 94/100. Tahuna Intermediate Team 1 was 1st with a score
of 97/100 and the Tahuna 2 Team came 2nd equal with our girls.
In the Years 9 and 10 Competition our Year 9 team of Maxine Bainbridge, Selena Ballantyne and Alice
Jones came 3rd (90/100) after John McGlashan College (95/100) and King’s High School (91/100).

National Chinese Essay Competition

It was very pleasing to see three Columba College students featuring as prize-winners in the 2012
competition. They were: Holly Hanson, Julia Isoyama and Kim Schultz, Year 11.
Other schools with prize-winners were Lincoln High School, St. Margaret’s College (Christchurch) and
ACG Strathallan College (Auckland).

Meng Li in Year 12 has been awarded a Top 100 Certificate in this
very challenging competition.
This placed Meng Li second in Otago after a student at Bayfield
High School who was among the group of ten finalists for 5th place
nationally. Congratulations to Meng Li on her fine result.

Junior School Playgrounds
We asked Mr Bill Roxburgh (Level 2 Operational Playground Inspector, University of Technology,
Sydney) of Adventure Southland Ltd. to inspect the two Junior School playgrounds and to write a
report for us on their safety and to make recommendations on improvements/repairs that may need to
be made.
We have now received that report and remedial action as recommended by Mr Roxburgh is underway.
In addition to a number of more minor repairs, the major recommendation is to increase and maintain
the depth of the bark chips.
The Parents’ Association has generously indicated its willingness to pay for the repairs and the bark
chips and this is appreciated by the College.
We also plan to ask Mr Roxburgh to undertake an annual check of the three outdoor playground
structures as a precautionary measure.

NZ Transport Agency “Safer Journeys for Children” Primary Years’
Competition
Well done to Rose Abdul Aziz in Year 7 on gaining a Highly Commended in the competition.
As part of the competition, students were required to create a digital resource about road safety. Rose
chose to make a video about road safety with the help of some of her friends.
Rose received a number of fiction and non-fiction books about road safety as her prize, and has
shared these with the girls who helped her with the video and has also donated the balance to the
Library.

Whooping cough update

New Zealand is currently experiencing an increase in rates of Pertussis (whooping cough) among
all age groups, but particularly the young and the elderly. Whooping cough is a potentially serious
illness for infants under 1 year of age.
The best protection is timely immunisation of children, as per the national immunisation schedule.
By the time a child starts school they should have had 4 Pertussis-containing vaccines (at ages 6
weeks, 3 months, 5 months and 4 years).
At age 11 children are offered another Pertussis-containing vaccine which will boost and prolong
their immunity.
If you think your child is not up-to-date with any vaccinations, please phone your practice nurse.
Vaccinations are free.
It is particularly important to keep children fully immunised if there is a baby in the house, or there is
regular contact with babies.
If your child has a persistent and severe cough, please keep the child at home and make a time to
see your GP.

Year 9 Ski Camp
This year’s Year 9 Ski Camp was held a little earlier than usual, which is just as well as, until this
week’s late fall, the snow was thinning fast and we had Spring conditions for most of the week,
meaning reasonably firm in the morning and pumpkin-soupish by the afternoon. With 83 students, six
teachers and seven parents, it was one of our biggest groups to date. We set off on Monday, 20 th
August, and managed to get to Coronet Peak in time to get everyone fitted and issued with their skis
or snowboards and boots, before settling into the Otago, Vincent and Southland Ski Club Lodges,
which were to be our home for the week. Lessons began at 9.00 a.m. each morning and lasted for 1½
hours and it was great to see the progress that the girls made over the week, with all able to use the
chairlifts and ski down various slopes by the end of the four days. Fortunately we didn’t have too
many trips to the medical centre and only needed to travel down the mountain twice to have students
x-rayed at the Lakes District Hospital, with one broken arm needing to be set and plastered. The
weather was kind to us and we managed to ski right through until 3.00 p.m. on Friday, 24 th September.
After a quick stop for fish and chips in the park in Alexandra, we arrived back at school very close to
the scheduled 8.30 p.m. with a tired but happy group of girls.
This was the second year that we had two Year 9 students from Turakina Maori Girls’ College in
Marton join our Ski Camp. We were very happy to have Kohu Thomas and Sativa Mataia with us for
the week. They fitted in beautifully with our girls who, in turn, learnt a lot about their school in the
lower North Island.
I would especially like to thank the parents who gave up their time to help with the camp: Mrs Anne
Parker, Mr Callum Reid, Mr Craig Foley, Mr Graeme Thompson, Mr Edward Fields, Prof. Anthony
Ritchie and Mr Evan Baddock, who has helped with many school camps and also made a DVD of
each for the girls to keep as a memento. Also, many thanks to the teachers who helped and who also
skied or snowboarded with the girls – Mrs Anstey, Ms Boek, Miss Wright, Mrs Skerten, Mr Stevenson
and Mr Williams. I would also like to add that this was a particularly pleasant group of girls to take
away and it was lovely to see them all supporting and encouraging one another, both on the slopes
and back in the huts.
I’ll finish with the words of Emily Ward: “My friendships grew a long way throughout this camp, and I
cannot thank Columba enough for having such an awesome camp! I wish I could go back �.”

South Island Tournament Week
Samara Dalziel (awarded Columba’s Most Valuable
Player of the Hockey Tournament), Bridget Thayer of
the Senior A Netball Team who was named in the
South Island Netball Tournament Team, and Kate
Guildford (awarded Columba’s Most Valuable Player
of the Soccer Tournament).
The First Xl Hockey Team has had a very impressive season in 2012. It claimed the Dunedin
Secondary Schools` Premier title beating Otago Girls` First Xl 9- 1 in the final, Columba last held the
trophy in 2007. The team won fifteen games in a fifteen week season, scoring 109 goals which is the
highest on record.
This provided an excellent platform for tournament week, where the team competed in the Jenny
McDonald South Island Tournament in Invercargill.
At this tournament the team was able to step up to a higher level and remain unbeaten in the seven
games, scoring 53 goals, and winning the gold medal and bringing home the Jenny McDonald cup,
beating Southland Girls’ 6-2, in a fantastic final.
The power of teamwork, goal setting, excellent preparation, quality leadership (by Samara Dalziel and
Jessie Chapman) and tremendous parental support provided the pathway to success. This group of
committed girls have had extra practices and have succeeded in achieving their season’s goals.
Parental support has been amazing on a weekly basis and for the duration of tournament. To the
marvellous parents, you have helped the team reach its potential and assisted your daughters and
myself extremely well. Thank you all.

The Year 7A Basketball Team completed a very successful season with a win in the final of the local
Year 7 Competition. They played in the final against St. Hilda’s with a score of 36-32.

Netball Season 2012
Another successful netball season has come to an end. Columba had fifteen teams in the Secondary
School competition – four senior competitive teams, three senior social teams, three Year Ten teams
and five Year Nine teams. The Columba Senior A netball team competed in the top club grade in
Dunedin. The Senior B netball team won the top Secondary school grade, beating off a spirited St
Hilda’s 10A team in the final. The team was coached by Mrs Lauren Piebenga and led very capably
by Jessie Chapman. Most of the team will return for 2013.
The Columba 9A netball team won the Premier B grade (second top Secondary school grade), beating
OGHS Year 10A team in the final. The 9A netball team put in a very gutsy performance given that
they had been away at the Year 9 Ski Camp all week in the lead-up to the final. The 9A team also
received the trophy for the top Year 9 netball team in Dunedin.
Other notable performances for the netball season include: Columba Senior Blue winning the Senior
Two grade, Columba Senior Green placed 3 rd in the Senior Four grade, Columba 10B placed 3rd in
the Intermediate Two grade, Columba 9B placed 3rd in the Junior One grade, Columba White and
Columba 9D placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Junior Four grade.
Columba College netball is in a very strong position with 14 girls (Years 9 to 13) being named in
Dunedin Netball Centre representative teams, the Senior A netball team winning the Senior Section of
the Otago Secondary Schools’ Netball Championships, 10A coming third and 9A being placed 2nd.
The 9A and 10A netball teams competed at the South Island Secondary School Development Netball
Tournament in the July school holidays. Both teams learnt a huge amount from the tournament and
came away from the games, much better teams as a result. Congratulations to Maddy Spence who
was named one of the ten Year 10 girls in the South Island identified as Talented Players.
Well done also to Bridget Thayer, Year 13 who was named in the “Tournament Team” at the recent
South Island Secondary Schools’ Netball Championships held last week in Dunedin.
We have had very good coaching for each of our netball teams this year and this has paid off with the
girls improving their strategies and overall technique. I look forward to another rewarding and
successful netball season next year. Thank you to the parents, families, friends and supporters who
have all helped the netball teams to enjoy the season and be successful this year.

Soccer
After having had an extremely successful after-school league season where they achieved second
place, the First XI soccer team took part in the “Lotto Satellite” Secondary Schools Girls’ Tournament.
From the start of the tournament the team performed with flair, intelligence, pace and resilience. Out of
the six games played Columba won 4, drew 1 and lost 1. In the end, the team finished fifth out of 16
teams and drew a great deal of praise from opposing coaches and spectators. Particularly pleasing
was the ability of the side to repeatedly come back from adverse situations. On a number of occasions
the team found itself under pressure but, in each case, all of the players maintained their composure
and trusted in their own skills.
All of the members of the team contributed positively – a fact reflected in the team’s goals being
shared around so many players. The player who was voted MVP by opposing coaches was Kate
Guildford. This achievement justifies a special mention as Kate’s enthusiasm, ability and positive
attitude impacted positively on the rest of the team throughout the season.
This extremely young team has established an extremely good foundation. By continuing to improve and
develop as a group there is every reason to be hopeful of genuine tournament success in the near future.

Chelsea Guthrie, Year 8 is to be congratulated on her 2nd placing in New Zealand at the Taekwondo
National Championships in her Height, Weight and Belt division.

Ice Hockey
Congratulations to Holly Barclay Year 11 on
being named a member of the New Zealand
Ice Ferns Squad. The Squad begins its
training schedule with a camp in Christchurch
in October, followed by another in Auckland in
December.
Holly competed as a member of the Southern
Women’s Ice Hockey Team in the National
Competition held recently in Auckland,
gaining 2nd place.

The 2013 Course and Careers Handbook will be posted at the end of next week to all parents of
girls in Years 9 to 13 next year. The girls’ option choices for 2013 are to be returned to school by
Monday, 15th October at the latest.
On Thursday, 27th September at 7.00 p.m. we are holding our Course Information Evening in
Constance Hall. HODs will be available also our Careers Adviser, NCEA Co-ordinator and
representatives of the city’s tertiary institutions. A separate reminder about this evening will be
included for present parents with the Course and Careers Handbook.
The 2013 Term Dates have now been settled and a copy of the dates will be posted on SchoolLinks
prior to this weekend. School starts on Tuesday, 29th January next year.
