Student Leadership
I am very pleased to report that our student leaders are doing an outstanding
job right across the school. Our school leaders, from our Junior School
Buddies, Monitors, Prefects, House officials and SRC representatives to our
Captains, all work hard to support others. School Captain, Louisa Zambetti,
attended the P&F Meeting last week to report on a Conference she attended
which was run by the Alliance of Girls Schools. Louisa highlighted the
responsibility that leaders feel and the rewards she gained from the Conference.
It was a most informative talk and Louisa thanked the P&F for funding two
members of the student leadership team to go to the Conference.
Year 11
High Achievers Assembly
Our high achievers from 2012, and their families, attended the annual Assembly
which was held in their honour. Special guest speaker was Dr Eleni Yiasemides,
an Old Girl (1997) who is a specialist Dermatologist and Surgeon. She gave an
entertaining description of her journey to become a Doctor and she encouraged
the girls to always strive to achieve their goals, even though the journey can
be hard at times. Representatives of the year group gave thoughtful tips to the
Assembly for success at the HSC.
Parents will have received the HSC report via email. I am pleased to report
that, with recent changes to university entrance, 93% of the class of 2012 have
qualified to enter degree courses. Many parents told me they were thrilled with
their daughter’s results.
Swimming Carnivals
The Junior School and the Senior School swimming carnivals were held in
the last fortnight. The girls were enthusiastic supporters for their houses, the
competitors pushed themselves to achieve their best and both Carnivals were
held in good weather. I thank all staff who work tirelessly for the girls and
parents who attended. Congratulations to Gray House for their victory in the
Senior Carnival and Richmond in the Junior Carnival.
Steve Biddulph
Parents who attended the talk by Steve Biddulph came away with helpful
strategies to assist their girls. Steve is a world expert on parenting and he
explained many new worrying trends about girls. He said that girls are in crisis
with alarming statistics that show: anxiety and depression in girls has doubled in
recent years; self-harm has increased by 60%; and 13% of girls suffer from an
eating disorder. “One in five girls will have their first sexual experience around
14 years of age”, he said. Steve blamed the corporate world which he said
exploited girls for marketing purposes, making girls anxious about themselves.
Some of his advice for parents to counteract this included:
* No internet or television in bedrooms;
* Mothers available to listen to their girls;
DANEBANK An Anglican School for Girls 80-98 Park Road Hurstville 2220 www.danebank.nsw.edu.au
* Fathers who are gentle and make their daughters feel special;
* Boundaries in the home regarding social media.
Junior School News
Term 1 has begun efficiently with students settling into normal school routines. There
are a few reminders to help the rest of the year continue to run smoothly.
1. Please keep all notes and mark dates and times in your calendar.
2. When your daughter returns to school after an absence, please supply a note
explaining the absence including dates. The school also requires a note for late
arrival or early departure.
3. When money is sent to school please put in an envelope with the child’s name,
class and the activity clearly marked on the front. Correct money must be sent as the
Junior Office has no facility for giving change.
$. If you have an unforseen event or an emergency and need to get a message to
your daughter please notify the Junior School Office before lunch if possible so staff
have enough time to deliver the message.
Swimming Carnival
Junior School Swimming Carnival
The Carnival was held last Thursday at Bexley Pool. What a great day it was, we
were blessed with wonderful weather and enthusiastic swimmers. The House
Officials passionately led their Houses, and with their encouragement many students
participated in all the races. Congratulations to Richmond for winning this year’s
Carnival.
Steve Biddulph
It was a privilege to have Steve Biddulph launch his new book ‘Raising Girls’
at Danebank on Friday 15 th February. Steve is one of the world’s best known
parenting authors and has been a psychologist for almost 30 years. It is a highly
recommended book, regardless of what stage your daughter is at now.
Year 6 did a great job when
they set up their Identity
Museum
DANEBANK News page 3
The Five Stages of Girlhood
1. Security – ‘Am I safe and loved’ - (birth to two years)
Human babies are the most dependent babies on earth. Born totally defenceless,
babies instinctively know that the adults around them have to love them, it’s not
enough to be fed and clothed. Machines could feed a baby and keep her alive, but
she would not develop intelligence or kindness.
2. Exploring – ‘Is the world a fun and interesting place – (two to five years)
This stage is when a girl learns to be confident and interested in the world around
her; to be smart and creative.
3. People skills – ‘Can I get along with others’ - (five to ten years)
Your daughter finds that she can have better fun by sharing a little, giving way a little,
cooperating and playing together, than if she is just on her own
4. Finding her soul – ‘Can I discover my deep-down self and what makes me
truly happy’ - (ten to fourteen years)
Far from being a woman but she is no longer a child, either. When your daughter
gains identity through doing, and believing, and strengthening her inner world, she
will be freed from the need for approval that haunts many teenage girls and makes
them conformist and dull.
5. Preparing for adulthood – ‘Can I take responsibility for my own life’ -
(fourteen to eighteen years)
At eighteen, your daughter begins to be a woman. But before that, at the age of
fourteen, the preparation for that huge leap begins in earnest. It’s mostly practical –
how to manage money, drive a car, manage time, eating, clothes, health, safety. But
it also marks a powerful shift in attitude. That takes more care still.
Girls have to be deliberately and proactively launched into healthy womanhood.
When this is done well, the results are impressive. A girl takes charge of her life and
begins to make her unique way in the world.
Year 5 & Year 6 Camp
Year 5 (Wednesday – Friday) and Year 6 (Tuesday – Friday) will be on Camp at
the Youthworks Waterslea site on the Shoalhaven River, West Cambewarra. The
students are looking forward to and excited about their time away at camp. This will
be a time for them to develop stronger relationships with peers and teachers, while
enjoying a range of outdoor activities.
