PGME-WIDE WORKSHOPS<br />

Biostatistics without Tears and Headaches<br />

This workshop covers the conceptual basis, use, and pitfalls of common biostatistical methods. It<br />

addresses the concepts needed to read, understand, and critically interpret the biostatistical portions of<br />

articles in the medical literature. The workshop includes hands-on exercises on the computer. Attendance<br />

at a minimum of 3 sessions is required. Participants who attend all 4 sessions get a certificate.<br />

Conflict & Communication- Level 1<br />

This program-specific, interactive workshop provides participants with the communication and negotiation<br />

skills for preventing, handling, and resolving conflict in the workplace.<br />

Conflict & Communication-Level 2<br />

An advanced workshop for those who have taken Conflict & Communication-1.<br />

Disclosing Unanticipated Medical Outcomes<br />

This workshop has been designed to assist clinicians and administrators in leading effective discussions<br />

with patients and families about unanticipated outcomes and medical errors.<br />

Ethics Day<br />

A one-day workshop on medical bioethics which is mandatory for new residents/fellows and senior<br />

nursing students. This session includes both didactic presentations and small-group discussion of case<br />

scenarios. Breakfast and lunch are provided.<br />

IMG Orientation<br />

A three-day orientation for externally sponsored international trainees. Topics include an orientation to<br />

the UofC and living in Calgary, an orientation to the Canadian Health Care System, an orientation to the<br />

Health Sciences Library, doctor-patient communication skills, written communication skills, transcription<br />

services, etc. Lunch is provided.<br />

Medical-Legal Module 1 - The Legal Aspects of Medical Practice<br />

An introductory module that is open to all residents but mandatory for all first-year residents. Module-1<br />

includes informed consent, informed transition of care, capacity, confidentiality, disclosure, and other<br />

important legal aspects of verbal and written communication with patients, families, and other healthcare<br />

professionals.<br />

Module 1 forms the basis for subsequent modules presented over a 2-year cycle.<br />

- Module 2 - Doctors' Legal Responsibilities and Relationships<br />

- Module 3 - Risk Management for Doctors<br />

- Module 4 - The Doctor's role in Legal Proceedings<br />

- Module 5 - Legal Aspects of Practice Management<br />

New Resident Orientation<br />

An orientation day for new residents and fellows organized by Alberta Health Services.<br />

Information packages are sent out in advance by the Medical Education Office.<br />

Personal Financial Management<br />

A seminar offered by MD Management on effective personal financial management and essential<br />

insurance requirements.<br />

Professional Financial Management<br />

A seminar offered by MD Management for senior residents and fellows. Significant others are also<br />

welcome to register. Topics include financial planning, professional insurance, contract negotiation,<br />

accounting and taxation issues. Breakfast and lunch are provided.<br />

Structured Oral Exams<br />

Structured Oral Exams are used to assess residents' clinical skills and CanMEDS competences. Candidates<br />

pass through a series of test stations, where they are presented with various clinical scenarios. They are<br />

asked a number of structured questions by a physician examiner and scored on their performance.<br />

Teaching Skills<br />

This workshop consists of three half-day sessions. Attendance is mandatory for all residents whose<br />

programs do not offer a teaching skills session in their Academic Half Day schedule. Participants must<br />

attend all three sessions. This workshop includes both didactic and interactive (small group) components.<br />

Topics include bedside, small group, large group, and procedural teaching, mentorship, evaluation, etc.<br />
