10:00 am – 10:55 am Compact Woodies for the Landscape Bryce Lane, NC State University With an ever shrinking property size and an increase in requests for small and compact gardens, it is important to adjust our plant palette to include more compact and dwarf woody plants. There are some great compact plants that perform well in the landscape. From evergreen shrubs , to deciduous trees, we'll look at some of the very best to choose from. 11:00 am – 11:55 pm Replacement Plants for Areas with Phytophthora in the Landscape Kelly Ivors, NC State University Due to the large number of Phytophthora species and their wide host ranges, it is very difficult to make general recommendations about replacement plants for the landscape when Phytophthora is established. The plants presented in this talk were compiled based on published reports, Plant Disease and Insect Clinic records from North Carolina and neighboring states, and the expert opinion of many plant pathologists. 12:00 pm – LUNCH 1:00 pm – 1:55 pm Design, Soils & Planting in Urban Streetscapes Barb Fair, NC State University Barb Fair will discuss how to pull together design concepts, plant selection and soil management techniques to create urban streetscapes that promote long-lived and beautiful plants. 28 • Nursery Notes 2:00 pm – 2:55 pm Top Ten Conifer Problems in the Landscape Craig Adkins, NC Cooperative Extension Service Conifers add year round interest to any landscape. Learn how to recognize and control some of the more common and not so common insects, mites and diseases that can impact the growth and performance of conifers in the landscape. 3:00 pm – 3:55 pm Tough Plants for Tough Times Doug Chapman, Plantworks Nursery Use these plants-some new, some overlooked-to enhance your landscapes and pique your customers’ interest. Doug will go through a list of plants both, new or nearly new and others that are great plants but often overlooked. I’ll show pictures and discuss my experience with using them in my landscape or growing them in production. In a climate that is constantly surprising us, these are plants that will survive and ensure a successful landscape. They might even bring a smile to your customers’ faces too. 4:00 pm – 4:55 pm Turf Management to Reduce Disease, Insect and Weed Pressure Grady Miller, NC State University This session will move through a logical sequence of turf management issues. It will focus first on turfgrass selection, and then on to management aspects as they relate to pest management. Since every maintenance practice, fertilizer application, and chemical application has an impact on turf health, it will concentrate on these typical management practices and their relationships to turf health/sustainability. Cultural and chemical control of turfgrass pests will be addressed. Each turfgrass has some limitations, so information will be provided on application and utilization of various products in addition to cultural control. The seminar will conclude with diagnostic services, i.e., how to get assistance with identification and control of common turfgrass pests.
