If you've been to Dance Fair before, you
know what a great event this is. If this will
be your first year, you're going to love it.
The doors will open at 3:30pm, with general
dancing from 4:00-5:00pm. Dinner
will be served at 5:00pm. Starting at
6:30pm, we will have approximately 50
exhibitions, grouped into sets, with general
dancing between each set. This is a great
opportunity to enjoy the vast ballroom
dancing talent located in the greater Dayton
area. If you'd like to perform, talk to
your dance instructor.
Ticket prices are $5 higher than last year.
Hara Arena raised their prices substantially
over last year's rates, so this price increase
was necessary to cover our expenses.
However, this is still a GREAT bargain for
such a fantastic evening.
The February dance of the 76 Club was held at
Arbor Hall on February 7 th , 2003. The dance
was attended by 129 dancers; we really appreciate
your attendance, especially given the slippery
conditions. Jack Meinking provided a
wonderful selection of both new and classic dance music and received
many compliments from the attendees.
During the intermission, John Bucholz and two of his students
provided the entertainment. For the first dance, Karen Clute
(wearing a flowing peach-colored gown) and John danced an exciting
and challenging ten-dance medley. Jane Kline (wearing a
black-and-silver dress) then joined John to dance a vibrant cha
cha. The audience appreciated the expertise and styling of both
routines.
The next 76 Club dance will be held March 6 th , 2003. Music will
be provided by Tony Rimkus. We look forward to seeing you
there.
Swing ‘n’ Sway
Think Spring. Think Swing 'n' Sway into Spring
that is.
Our club is proud to bring you the first dance of
Spring 2004, 8-11 p.m., March 27 at Arbor Hall.
Sure to put a "spring" in your step will be the
delightful music of our very own Jack Yaus.
Our thanks to Cincinnatians
Anne Perl and Kevin Kock for their foxtrot
rendition at our January dance. They
have danced previous exhibitions in English
waltz and international tango, which were
choreographed by Bonita Brockert. Neither
dancer is a stranger to exhibition or competitive
dancing. Anne, a native of Austria, began
dancing in her teens. By her mid-20s she
was dancing in Viennese waltz formations and competing in international
standard. Her work as a research scientist for Children's
hospital brought her to the Queen City in 1999. When she found
the local USABDA chapter for social and exhibition dancing, she
knew she could be comfortable in her new home. Kevin is a Cincinnati
native and has performed dance exhibitions since the mid-
90s. By 1999 he had a yen to compete and did so in American
smooth and international standard under the watchful eye of Bonita.
The computer programmer met Anne in January 2000 and
they became exhibition dance partners in April.
It's not too early to be thinking about planning for New Year's Eve.
If you'd enjoy being on the creative team to plan this year-ending
event, contact a Swing ‘n’ Sway board member.
See you 'round the dance floor.
Annual 76 Club Dinner/Meeting/
The end of the dance year for the 76 Club is fast approaching.
Our final (April) event of the year is always a combination of a
dinner, followed by a brief business meeting and election of new
board members, capped by our regular dance. The date is Saturday,
April 3 rd ; the doors will open at 5:30 PM; the dinner will
start at 6 PM; the business meeting will start at about 7 PM; and
the dance, as usual, starts at 8 PM.
This year, the dinner will feature roast beef, baked chicken, Italian
meatballs, and turkey & dressing accompanied by redskin
potatoes, green beans, and carrots. There will be a 25-item salad
bar for your enjoyment, and the dinner will be capped-off with
assorted fruit pies. The cost for the meal for non-members is $10
per person. There is NO COST to members for the meal, but, in
order to enjoy the dinner, YOU MUST SUBMIT A RESERVA-
TION FORM (printed on Page 5 of this Newsletter) and include
the $10 deposit for each member. The $10 will be returned to the
members at the door.
REGULAR members will pay the normal $6 entry fee for the
dance; non-members pay $10 per person for the dance. Reservation
forms must be received by March 26 th .
Dance(tonians)
Our entertainment was championshiplevel
competitive amateur couple Phil
and Marcie Gabriele from South Bend,
Indiana. They danced a romantic waltz,
with Marcie dressed in a beautiful pink
gown, and Phil looking handsome in
black. After Marcie changed into a sexy
black dress, and Phil donned a hat, they
danced a sultry tango with Argentinean
styling. They are wonderful performers
and were very well received.
Dance(tonians) celebrated Valentine's Day
by sharing our love for ballroom dancing,
with over 190 in attendance, at Arbor Hall
on February 14th. We handed out chocolate
candy hearts as a special treat to the first 125
guests. The tables were festively decorated
with red hearts, and pink rosebuds in small
vases. Jack Meinking played a wide variety
of music to keep everyone on their feet.
We held our usual raffle of three restaurant gift certificates. Congratulations
to the winners.
For our March dance, the Shipleys will be performing a waltz for
us. They have a new routine, so if you think you've seen the
Shipley's before, you've never seen them like this!
It was great to see such a large turnout for our Valentine's Dance.
We hope to see all of you again for our next dance on March 13th
at Arbor Hall.
Open Letter from the Club Boards
Dear Club Members,
As you are probably aware, the past year has been a difficult year financially.
All three clubs have operated with significant deficits ($2-3 thousand)
between their income and operating expenses. The major expenses of hosting
a monthly dance are the rental of Arbor Hall and the DJ fee, totaling about
$1000 per night. These expenses are fixed but reasonable.
Your club boards held a joint meeting in mid-January, primarily to discuss
the deficits and to determine an approach to minimizing the “red ink” in future
years. Among other things, we plan to reduce the amount of money spent for
entertainment at the intermission, and the costs for the monthly newsletter are
being reduced. However, our main problem is with our income. In the past few
years, the number of members in each of the clubs have decreased – more for
some clubs than for others. Also, attendance at most dances has fallen off
about 25%. The membership dues and the guest/regular member door
charges no longer come close to covering the increased expenses. One main
problem is that the current dues for Prepaid membership [for Dance(tonians)
and 76] provide an income of only $4.09 or $3.75 respectively per person for
each dance; another problem for some clubs is that the number of paying
guests per dance has decreased.
It is the intent of the Dance(tonians) and 76 clubs to increase fees to provide
more income from the Prepaid status; the amount will increase to provide
$5.45 or $5 respectively per person per dance ($60 per year, which matches
the Swing ‘n’ Sway fee). Dance(tonians) and 76 clubs are also raising their
Regular membership dues to $20 per person per year. All three clubs are also
trying to attract more guests and new members by advertising in a number of
free publications, including the GO! section of the Dayton Daily News (and activedayton.com)
and in the Single Source News. We also have a Web site
(ballroomdancedayton.com) under construction to provide more information
about the clubs and the dances.
Phil and Marcie Gabriele, pictured above,
performed a waltz and tango during intermission
at Dance(tonians) Valentine’s Day
Dance on February 14th. The mild weather
that evening helped bring our a large crowd
for the dance. See Page 2 for more details.
We ask for your understanding as we try these measures to keep the
clubs solvent. The increases we have proposed will NOT cover all the expenses,
but we hope that we can increase the attendance at the dances
enough to cover the difference. YOU CAN HELP by “talking up” the dances at
your studios and among your dancing friends. If you have been to a dance
recently, you know that there has been plenty of dancing and sitting space
available (except for the 76 Club dance in December 2003). Even with the increased
dues, the dances are still an entertainment bargain.
Respectfully yours,
Rick Courtney, Chairman, Dance(tonians)
Bill Dean, President, Seventy-Six
Pamela Neveu, President, Swing ‘n’ Sway
SECOND ANNUAL "CHALLENGE"
This 'baby' competition is definitely 'booming'! With approximately
2,500 entries this year, the comp has grown considerably
from last year. The "Global Grand Pro-Am Circuit
Organizers", one of which is the always highly visible, handson
Sam Sodano of Ohio Star Ball fame, have put together a
well-run and friendly event that is well worth attending!
The 2004 2nd Annual Global Grand Challange had a "who's
who" list of officials. Heading this list was Scrutineer and
Chairman of Judges Leroy Walters; judging were Didio
Barrera, Rufus Dustin, Donna Edlestein, Ian Folker,
Rosendo Fumero, Diane Gingerich, Maria Hansen, Kristina
Ilo, Susan McFerran and Kathryn Schaffer. The music was
beautifully done by Keith Todd and the registry handled by
the always competent and very busy Brenda Burger. Also
playing a very large part in running this competition were
Anna Harwood, Nancy Senner, Lindsey Rutherford and last,
but certainly not least, Bill Sparks.
The Global Grand Challenge was held in the Marriott Hotel
in Downtown Indianapolis beginning February 5th and ending
February 7th. This is a beautifully appointed hotel and
the staff were always courteous, friendly and helpful in any
circumstance.
The ballroom was lovely, housing not only the beautiful wood
competition floor, but a nice sized wood practice floor to one
side, behind the tables and chairs provided for spectators
and competitors! The vendors were also located inside the
ballroom, but possibly as the comp grows in size the space
now utilized by vendors will be appropriated for additional
seating and the vendors will be located in the spacious areas
outside the ballroom. Just a few steps down the hall from
the ballroom were 2 very large rooms (one for ladies and
one for gents) available to competitors for changing costumes,
freshening make-up, or to just plain rest! Nice touch!
The Global Grand Challenge was held in the Marriott Hotel
in downtown Indianapolis February 5-7, 2004 and was attended
by studios from across the Tri-State Area and beyond.
Pro/Am Competitors from Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky were:
Doreen Beatrice with Kevin Kock, Calvin Pauley and Hans
