WITH HONOURS
This is a credit-based qualification.
These regulations should not be read in isolation. It is important that you read them in conjunction
with the following documents:

B–Eng Q1 DEGREE NAME
B–Eng Q1.1 The University offers the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours. The qualification is
referred to as the BEng (Honours). Holders of this qualification are permitted to use the letters BEng
(Hons) (Open) after their names.
B–Eng Q2 REGISTRATION
B–Eng Q2.1 To register as a student, you must satisfy the requirements set out in Student
Regulation OU 3. There is no academic entry requirement unless regulation B–Eng Q3.3 applies.
B–Eng Q2.2 To be awarded the degree, you must be registered for it and have successfully
completed all the requirements.
B–Eng Q2.3 You must study modules in the order, if any, specified in the enrolment process for
your selected pathway, unless exceptional permission is given by the Programme Director for the
qualification.
B–Eng Q2.4 If you are counting OU credit that was awarded before registering for the qualification
or an award of credit transfer, or if you are changing your pathway within the qualification, the
remaining credit must be studied in the order, if any, specified in the enrolment process for your
selected pathway, unless exceptional permission is given by the Programme Director for the
qualification.
B–Eng Q3 CREDIT REQUIREMENT
B–Eng Q3.1 The University will award you the BEng (Honours) if you have 360 credits from
approved modules provided that:
(a) 90 credits are from the specified compulsory modules at OU first level
(b) 150 credits are from the specified compulsory modules at OU second level
(c) 120 credits are from the specified compulsory modules at OU third level
BEng Q3.2 The Senate may permit you to qualify for the degree if you have 360 credits, of which
not less than 120 are from the compulsory modules at OU third level, and not more than 240 are
transferred credit.

BEng Q3.3 The University will award you the BEng (Honours) if you have 120 credits from
approved modules, provided that:
(a) you have successfully completed the Open University Foundation Degree in Engineering, the
Open University Diploma of Higher Education in Engineering, the Open University Foundation
Degree in Materials Fabrication and Engineering, the Open University Diploma of Higher
Education in Materials Fabrication and Engineering or equivalent prior study approved by the
University. In all cases the previous study must have been completed within the 5 years prior to
registration for the BEng (Honours).
(b) 90 credits are from the specified core option modules at OU third level
(c) 30 credits are from the specified compulsory module at OU third level.
B–Eng Q3.4 The credit for this qualification must include from Open University modules a
minimum amount of credit that meets the conditions of General Qualification Regulation GQR 3.4;
that minimum amount is 120 credits.
B–Eng Q4 CREDIT TRANSFER
B–Eng Q4.1 The credit transfer scheme for the BEng (Honours) is governed by General
Qualification Regulation GQR 6.
B–Eng Q4.2 Any award of transferred credit towards the specified compulsory modules at OU first
and second level will take the form of module exemption.
B–Eng Q4.3 The study considered for an award of transferred credit must have been completed
within the 5 years prior to the University receiving your complete application for credit transfer
towards this degree.
B–Eng Q4.4 The maximum award of transferred credit towards the BEng (Honours) is 240 credits.
B–Eng Q5 HONOURS DEGREE CLASSIFICATION
B–Eng Q5.1 The BEng (Honours) is classified as follows:
• first class
• upper second class
• lower second class
• third class.
B–Eng Q5.2 For the purpose of classifying your degree, the University will use a minimum of 120
and a maximum of 240 credits from your best grades on specified Open University modules at OU
second level or higher. Of these, at least 120 credits must be from modules at OU third level. The class
of the degree must be in accordance with the scheme of classification prescribed by the Senate.
B–Eng Q6 DURATION OF STUDY
B–Eng Q6.1 If regulation B–Eng Q3.1 applies to you, the OU credit required for the award of the
BEng (Honours) must be obtained during a period not exceeding 12 years, except where credit transfer
has been awarded, in which case the time to complete the OU credit will be less, as follows:
• 120 credits to complete: 5 years
• 150-180 credits to complete: 6 years
• 210-240 credits to complete: 7 years
• 270-300 credits to complete: 8 years
• 330 credits to complete: 9 years

B–Eng Q6.2 If regulation B–Eng Q3.3 applies to you, the OU credit for the award of the BEng
(Honours) must be obtained during a period not exceeding 5 years.
B–Eng Q6.3 The BEng (Honours) can be obtained during the time that the degree is available. If
the degree is approved for withdrawal regulation GQR 3.1.2 will apply.
B–Eng Q6.4 Credit from particular modules may cease to be countable towards the BEng (Honours)
at a specified point in time after their final presentation.
