This is a credit-based qualification.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se regulations should not be read in isolation. It is important that you read them in conjunction<br />

<strong>with</strong> the following documents:<br />

• General Qualification Regulations (Registered Undergraduate Qualifications)<br />

• Schedule A to <strong>The</strong> Qualification Regulations (Registered Undergraduate Qualifications)<br />

• Student Regulations<br />

• Module Regulations<br />

B–Eng Q1 DEGREE NAME<br />

B–Eng Q1.1 <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers the <strong>Bachelor</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong> <strong>with</strong> <strong>Honours</strong>. <strong>The</strong> qualification is<br />

referred to as the BEng (<strong>Honours</strong>). Holders <strong>of</strong> this qualification are permitted to use the letters BEng<br />

(Hons) (<strong>Open</strong>) after their names.<br />

B–Eng Q2 REGISTRATION<br />

B–Eng Q2.1 To register as a student, you must satisfy the requirements set out in Student<br />

Regulation OU 3. <strong>The</strong>re is no academic entry requirement unless regulation B–Eng Q3.3 applies.<br />

B–Eng Q2.2 To be awarded the degree, you must be registered for it and have successfully<br />

completed all the requirements.<br />

B–Eng Q2.3 You must study modules in the order, if any, specified in the enrolment process for<br />

your selected pathway, unless exceptional permission is given by the Programme Director for the<br />

qualification.<br />

B–Eng Q2.4 If you are counting OU credit that was awarded before registering for the qualification<br />

or an award <strong>of</strong> credit transfer, or if you are changing your pathway <strong>with</strong>in the qualification, the<br />

remaining credit must be studied in the order, if any, specified in the enrolment process for your<br />

selected pathway, unless exceptional permission is given by the Programme Director for the<br />

qualification.<br />

B–Eng Q3 CREDIT REQUIREMENT<br />

B–Eng Q3.1 <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> will award you the BEng (<strong>Honours</strong>) if you have 360 credits from<br />

approved modules provided that:<br />

(a) 90 credits are from the specified compulsory modules at OU first level<br />

(b) 150 credits are from the specified compulsory modules at OU second level<br />

(c) 120 credits are from the specified compulsory modules at OU third level<br />

BEng Q3.2 <strong>The</strong> Senate may permit you to qualify for the degree if you have 360 credits, <strong>of</strong> which<br />

not less than 120 are from the compulsory modules at OU third level, and not more than 240 are<br />

transferred credit.<br />

BEng Q3.3 <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> will award you the BEng (<strong>Honours</strong>) if you have 120 credits from<br />

approved modules, provided that:<br />

(a) you have successfully completed the <strong>Open</strong> <strong>University</strong> Foundation Degree in <strong>Engineering</strong>, the<br />

<strong>Open</strong> <strong>University</strong> Diploma <strong>of</strong> Higher Education in <strong>Engineering</strong>, the <strong>Open</strong> <strong>University</strong> Foundation<br />

Degree in Materials Fabrication and <strong>Engineering</strong>, the <strong>Open</strong> <strong>University</strong> Diploma <strong>of</strong> Higher<br />

Education in Materials Fabrication and <strong>Engineering</strong> or equivalent prior study approved by the<br />

<strong>University</strong>. In all cases the previous study must have been completed <strong>with</strong>in the 5 years prior to<br />

registration for the BEng (<strong>Honours</strong>).<br />

(b) 90 credits are from the specified core option modules at OU third level<br />

(c) 30 credits are from the specified compulsory module at OU third level.<br />

B–Eng Q3.4 <strong>The</strong> credit for this qualification must include from <strong>Open</strong> <strong>University</strong> modules a<br />

minimum amount <strong>of</strong> credit that meets the conditions <strong>of</strong> General Qualification Regulation GQR 3.4;<br />

that minimum amount is 120 credits.<br />

B–Eng Q4 CREDIT TRANSFER<br />

B–Eng Q4.1 <strong>The</strong> credit transfer scheme for the BEng (<strong>Honours</strong>) is governed by General<br />

Qualification Regulation GQR 6.<br />

B–Eng Q4.2 Any award <strong>of</strong> transferred credit towards the specified compulsory modules at OU first<br />

and second level will take the form <strong>of</strong> module exemption.<br />

B–Eng Q4.3 <strong>The</strong> study considered for an award <strong>of</strong> transferred credit must have been completed<br />

<strong>with</strong>in the 5 years prior to the <strong>University</strong> receiving your complete application for credit transfer<br />

towards this degree.<br />

B–Eng Q4.4 <strong>The</strong> maximum award <strong>of</strong> transferred credit towards the BEng (<strong>Honours</strong>) is 240 credits.<br />

B–Eng Q5 HONOURS DEGREE CLASSIFICATION<br />

B–Eng Q5.1 <strong>The</strong> BEng (<strong>Honours</strong>) is classified as follows:<br />

• first class<br />

• upper second class<br />

• lower second class<br />

• third class.<br />

B–Eng Q5.2 For the purpose <strong>of</strong> classifying your degree, the <strong>University</strong> will use a minimum <strong>of</strong> 120<br />

and a maximum <strong>of</strong> 240 credits from your best grades on specified <strong>Open</strong> <strong>University</strong> modules at OU<br />

second level or higher. Of these, at least 120 credits must be from modules at OU third level. <strong>The</strong> class<br />

<strong>of</strong> the degree must be in accordance <strong>with</strong> the scheme <strong>of</strong> classification prescribed by the Senate.<br />

B–Eng Q6 DURATION OF STUDY<br />

B–Eng Q6.1 If regulation B–Eng Q3.1 applies to you, the OU credit required for the award <strong>of</strong> the<br />

BEng (<strong>Honours</strong>) must be obtained during a period not exceeding 12 years, except where credit transfer<br />

has been awarded, in which case the time to complete the OU credit will be less, as follows:<br />

• 120 credits to complete: 5 years<br />

• 150-180 credits to complete: 6 years<br />

• 210-240 credits to complete: 7 years<br />

• 270-300 credits to complete: 8 years<br />

• 330 credits to complete: 9 years<br />

B–Eng Q6.2 If regulation B–Eng Q3.3 applies to you, the OU credit for the award <strong>of</strong> the BEng<br />

(<strong>Honours</strong>) must be obtained during a period not exceeding 5 years.<br />

B–Eng Q6.3 <strong>The</strong> BEng (<strong>Honours</strong>) can be obtained during the time that the degree is available. If<br />

the degree is approved for <strong>with</strong>drawal regulation GQR 3.1.2 will apply.<br />

B–Eng Q6.4 Credit from particular modules may cease to be countable towards the BEng (<strong>Honours</strong>)<br />

at a specified point in time after their final presentation.<br />
