Continuing Ministerial Development
Statement of Expectations
This guidance is issued under Regulation 19 of the Ecclesiastical Offices (Terms of
Service) Regulations 2009, and sets out advice in relation to arrangements for Continuing
Ministerial Education and Development in dioceses.
The purpose of Continuing Ministerial Development (CMD) is to strengthen and deepen a
lifelong learning culture within each diocese. Good practice in both provision and
participation are ultimately evidenced in spiritual and numerical growth with the Church’s
ministers more fully engaged in God’s mission themselves, in the variety of roles they have
been licensed to as public representative ministers, and better able to stimulate and
enable the whole Church to respond to its call.
CMD focuses not just on learning and training but takes seriously the flourishing of the
whole person in their ministerial context. It cannot seek to meet all the individual needs of
everyone but aims to create a normative environment in which developmental learning is
recognized as a hallmark of professional good practice as well as a central aspect of
discipleship. It is also a means by which we exercise grateful stewardship of the talents
which God has entrusted to us, both as individuals and as the Church.
Good CMD provision is characterized by:
• a prophetic focus on the needs of the Church of the future as well as the immediate
needs of the Church of today
• a well articulated theology of CMD accompanied by a clear statement of
expectation
• a responsiveness to national and diocesan vision setting and policy
• visible modelling of good practice by key people including senior staff
• appointment of qualified post holders
• allocation of financial resources in accordance to articulated priorities
• collaboration between Dioceses and ecumenical partners regionally
• shared delivery with other Diocesan departments
• alignment with IME 1 – 7
• alignment with Clergy Terms of Service and Ministerial Development Review
• particular attention to transition points in ministry
• integration of the needs of the individual with the strategic objectives of the Diocese
and the priorities of the wider Church
• inclusion of all those exercising ministry in the name of the Church with attention
given to their differing needs
• ready access to information and to personal advice and support
• provision of enjoyable, supportive and inspirational learning events
• regular review of provision
Good CMD participation includes:
• honouring of vocation to “be diligent in prayer, in reading Holy Scripture, and in
all studies that will deepen your faith”
• for full time ministers taking personal responsibility in setting aside at least 5 days
for CMD and the best part of a week for retreat each year and encouraging and
enabling others to do the same
• positive engagement with ongoing developmental learning at all stages of ministry
• regular participation in Ministerial Development Review
• proactively planning one’s own learning especially in response to Ministerial
Development Review
• using Ministerial Development Review to assess and apply learning undertaken
• keeping abreast of changing legal and public responsibilities
• planning ahead for possible longer periods of developmental leave
• balancing individual inclinations and enthusiasms with the needs and demands of
the present role
• willingness to share knowledge and skills in order to resource the learning of others
INTRODUCTION – the Director of Learning for Discipleship and Ministry
Welcome to this year’s Continuing Ministerial Development brochure. I hope you will find
much to interest and engage you in it.
The brochure contains our programme of Diocesan events for 2013 including the Clergy
Day and Archdeaconry Days, plus a selection of learning opportunities outside the
Diocese. It’s not possible to include everything but each year we provide a handpicked few
just to give you a flavour of what’s available. Other events may be publicised via e bulletin
throughout the year. We always welcome new ideas so if you’ve recently taken part in a
good piece of learning and would like us to consider offering it to the Diocese do let us
know.
In the second half of the brochure you will find resources to support you in your ministry
such as coaching, mentoring and consultancy which can be accessed on an individual
basis, also a section on Wellbeing, a distinctive feature of our Salisbury approach to CMD.
Don’t forget you can always ask for an individual consultation to discuss your particular
CMD needs so please contact us if you would like to arrange a meeting.
Enclosed with this brochure you will find:
a lilac Booking Form
a green ‘Learning Record’ form requesting details of any learning you have done outside
the Diocese in 2012
a cream Talent Bank Form. Take a look and see which of your gifts and skills you might
be able to share more widely this year
a blue Feedback Form for your comments, questions and requests. Your feedback is
much appreciated and makes it possible for us to keep on improving what we offer
Our Diocesan CMD expectation
Our shared expectation is that the following will be the normal pattern for each of us in
2013:
Clergy Day
Archdeaconry Day
At least one other event selected from the Diocesan programme
Regular attendance at Chapter whenever possible
Participation in Ministry Review
You may attend as many events from the Diocesan programme as you wish.
If you are planning other learning for yourself in addition to what is in the Diocesan
programme we invite you to give brief details on the Booking Form.
The Learning for Discipleship and Ministry Team keeps a record of the learning
undertaken by individual ministers. This consists of the dates and details of Diocesan
events attended each year and other events for which funding has been allocated. If you
wish to see your personal entry please contact Tina Draycott at the Learning for
Discipleship and Ministry Team Office. This information may be useful to you in completing
the Church of England standard job application form which asks for details of continuing
ministerial development.
Booking
Please complete your Booking Form and return it to the Learning for Discipleship and
Ministry Team Office not later than Monday 14 January.
On the form we ask you to
indicate that you are able to attend the relevant shared events and have noted the dates
select from the Diocesan programme by ticking the boxes
let us know if there are other ways in which we can help and support you
tell us about your other learning plans if you wish to do so
Unless you hear otherwise please assume that your booking has been accepted. Full
details and joining instructions for each event will be sent to you approximately a fortnight
beforehand. If you find that you are unable to attend an event for which you have booked
we ask you to let us know as soon as possible. This is particularly important at events with
limited numbers as we may be able to offer your place to another person. It also helps us
keep down the costs of meals, resource packs etc. If costs have been incurred on your
behalf and you have not notified us that you are unable to come within a reasonable time
frame we will request a contribution from you. If an event with limited numbers is
oversubscribed places will be allocated on a ‘first come’ basis but we will do our best to
run the event again on another occasion.
Funding
All events in the Diocesan programme are offered free of charge although a donation may
be requested where a meal is provided. For those events for which there is a residential
option you will be asked to cover the costs of residence yourself.
Attendance by Diocesan invitation at a range of external courses and consultations is
funded on your behalf. Funding is also available on a discretionary basis to individuals who
are planning their own learning.
The standard grant for ordained ministers in 2013 is £240 (1% of stipend) and this may be
applied for by stipendiary or non stipendiary ministers for any relevant learning activity.
Exceptional requests for larger amounts may be considered.
Funding is not available for retreats but parishes are requested to treat this as an expense
of office.
There is no automatic funding to Teams or Deaneries for corporate events but all or part of
a number of individual grants can be released for this purpose to enable a group of people
to plan something together.
Ordained ministers in the first four years of ministry have a separate learning programme
but are also invited to all shared events and are very welcome to any of the events on the
Diocesan programme. You are not normally eligible for individual grants as the money
allocated to you has already been spent on the IME Part 2 programme. However ordained
ministers completing degrees or working for higher degrees in their first four years will be
assisted with funding wherever possible. The standard grant for 2013 will be applicable for
this purpose and this may be claimed by stipendiary or non stipendiary ministers.
If you wish to apply for a grant please put in your claim in advance and not retrospectively
by contacting us with outline details of what you propose to do and the cost. Money can
often be advanced where needed.
We also hold information about other possible sources of funding.
Members of the Learning for Discipleship and Ministry Team are here to help you and we
CLERGY DAY
‘USING THE NEW TESTAMENT IN ETHICAL ISSUES TODAY’
Wednesday 10 July
All day at Bryanston School, Blandford
Keynote speaker: Professor Richard Burridge
The major issues concerning ethical dilemmas around many common human
experiences confront us in both public and personal morality. Richard Burridge will
be exploring a methodology which illustrates this with regard to issues of money,
wealth and poverty in the morning, and beginning and end of life issues in the
afternoon
The Revd Professor Richard A. Burridge has been Dean of King’s College London since 1993, and
was appointed to a personal Chair in Biblical Interpretation in 2008. Before coming to King's
College London he was Lazenby Chaplain at the University of Exeter, where he also taught New
Testament and Ethics. He was originally a classicist and schoolmaster before being ordained in
1985.
Richard has written several books on Jesus and the Gospels (notably What are the Gospels A
Comparison with Graeco-Roman Biography, 1992, new revised edition, 2004; Four Gospels, One
Jesus 1994 and new revised edition 2005; and a commentary on John, 1998, reissued for the
Lambeth Conference in 2008) as well as writing on ethics, the purposes of universities and higher
education, and Christian responses to contemporary film and fiction (Faith Odyssey, 2001, revised
edition 2003). His most recent book, Imitating Jesus: An Inclusive Approach to New Testament
Ethics (2007) looks at how New Testament ethics should be interpreted in the light of his argument
that the Gospels are essentially biographies of Jesus, using South African apartheid as a case
study. In January 2009 it was announced that Imitating Jesus was one of five titles shortlisted for
the Michael Ramsey Prize.
Richard’s current work builds on his work on ethics in Imitating Jesus and other thinking over the
last fifteen years. He is presently working on a methodology to illustrate approaches to ethical
dilemmas and common human experiences, and the provisional title of this new book is Money,
Sex, Power, Violence, and the Meaning of Life (publication date to be determined).
Richard is a member of the Church of England’s General Synod and chaired their Validation Panel for
ordination training and theological education (1996-2004); he also takes study days for clergy and lay
people both across England and for Dioceses across the Anglican Communion. He has acted as a writer
and Consultant to the Millennium Dome at Greenwich and for the National Gallery, London and appears
regularly on national TV and radio.
Please note the date in your diary straight away AND KEEP THE WHOLE DAY AND
EVENING FREE, thankyou!!! Please also note in your diary the Clergy Conference
Monday 30 June – Thursday 3 July 2014 at The Hayes Conference Centre,
MAKING THE MOST OF MOTHERING SUNDAY
Date: Tuesday 29 January
Venue: Sarum College
Led by: Em Coley
Mothering Sunday is a difficult day. It is surrounded in emotion – joy, failure, and
bereavement to name but a few – and it is often impossible to hold all of these conflicting
pastoral demands with integrity in the face of the expectations of the day. Part of the
reason for this may be because our focus has alighted on biological mothers and has
moved from the origins of the day and the traditional elements of a Mothering Sunday
service
This study day will explore varieties of liturgical practice associated with Mothering
Sunday, identifying those which express both the celebration and the ambiguities of the
day. It will also explore the history of Mothering Sunday and in so doing reorient our
approach to this popular festival
Em Coley is Associate Priest in Kennington, Oxford. She is the author of Mothering
Sunday (Grove Books, 2005)
Grove Farm House, Melbury Abbas
‘If you meet George Herbert on the road, kill him!’ In this provokingly titled recent book
Justin Lewis-Anthony asks why many contemporary clergy are under such pressure and
some are experiencing burn out. Do we need to radically rethink our model of ministry In
this day of reflection Ian, Sue and Peter will help us explore how we can recapture the
contemplative heart of ministry. This event has been fully booked in three previous years
and we are pleased to be able to offer it again this year
ARMY CHAPLAINCY: A CONTENTIOUS MINISTRY
Date: Tuesday 12 February
Venue: Allenby Barracks, Bovington, Dorset
Led by: Andrew Totten
The Army is a significant presence in the Diocese of Salisbury with several operational
bases and a large number of army families and retired army officers living among us. This
is an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the challenges our soldiers face and
the issues involved in providing for their pastoral and spiritual care
The day will explore the ethics, theology, and practice of chaplaincy in the British Army
with a particular focus on current operations in Helmand Province. This will also be an
opportunity to think about how we as local churches and as a Diocese can work cooperatively
with the Army
Padre Andrew Totten MBE is an Assistant Chaplain-General, currently based at the
headquarters of the Army’s recruiting and training division. Ordained in the Church of
Ireland, he was commissioned into the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department in 1994, and
has seen operational service in Bosnia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Iraq, and Afghanistan
‘NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD’: NEW EUCHARISTIC PRAYERS FOR USE WITH
CHILDREN
Date: Monday 25 February
Venue: Diocesan Education Centre
Led by: Sandra Millar and Barbara Meardon
Last year the Church authorised two new Eucharistic prayers for use with children or on
occasions when a significant number of children are present. It has also been agreed that
children will be allowed to distribute the bread and wine in a service either in church or in a
school. The day is an opportunity to look in detail at the new prayers and also consider
their use within the wider picture of children’s and all age worship
Sandra is Children’s Officer in the Diocese of Gloucester. She is the author of
‘Worshipping Together: creating all-age services that work’ and ‘Festivals Together:
creating all-age worship through the year’. Barbara is one of our two Diocesan Children
and Young People Advisors in the Diocese of Salisbury
LEGAL AND GENERAL
Date: Tuesday 26 February
Venue: Board Room, Church House
Led by: Stephen Dawson with contributions from Sue Cannings, Phil Musselwhite,
Christine Romano, Angie Wheeler, John Kilbee/ Ian Bromilow
The regulations relating to the governance of your church, its finance and buildings can
appear formidable. This day aims to enable you to understand how they can be used to
support local ministry and mission rather than being an obstacle
Topics covered include: legal responsibilities, governance, managing finance, how fairer
share works, stewardship and giving, and caring for your church building. The day is
particularly recommended for those in IME Part 2, especially IME 6, but is open to
everyone so why not come along and have a refresher
LET THE WORD OF CHRIST DWELL IN YOU RICHLY: REIMAGINING THE ROLE OF
THE BIBLE IN WORSHIP
Date: Wednesday 1 May
Led by: James Steven
Venue: Sarum College
For Anglicans ‘The Service of the Word’ in Common Worship is often presented as a way
of exploiting flexibility in service planning. The aim of this day is to take a different and
more foundational approach which explores the theological and historical rationale for
using the Bible in worship. This will provide fresh insights for ways in which worship
connects with the dynamic and living scriptural tradition
Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the practical implications of this for
worship leadership and planning. This will include helping congregations prepare to listen
to the Bible, using biblical books or passages to shape a service structure, and employing
ways of using biblical texts to enrich worship. Consideration will also be given to the
pastoral implications of leading communities that are ‘formed by the Word’
James Steven has worked as a theological educator at Trinity College Bristol, King’s
College London and now at Sarum College. James has a long standing interest in the way
that the Bible informs and enlivens public worship and has recently completed research on
the Anabaptist Daily Prayer Book
FLEXIBILITY IN COMMON WORSHIP: A GUIDE
Date: Thursday 6 June
Led by: Mark Earey
Venue: Sarum College
When the new Common Worship liturgies for the Church of England began to appear,
Mark Earey was based at Sarum College as the Praxis National Education Officer, training
and preparing people for the new services. Since then he has noted the questions which
come up again and again about how to use Common Worship flexibly. The growth of
'Fresh Expressions' of church has more sharply focused a question which is also being
asked in more traditional patterns of church – just what can we do with Common Worship
Mark will help us to explore and clarify the freedoms within Common Worship, and
consider where Church of England liturgy might need to go in the future. An ideal day for
those who would like to be confident and informed in the way they plan and lead the
Common Worship liturgies
Mark teaches liturgy at the Queens’ Foundation in Birmingham. He has accumulated very
significant experience of how the Church of England has received the Common Worship
liturgies both on a national level, when he worked as the Praxis Education Officer, and in
the local parish as a Team Rector in West Yorkshire. His latest book, Finding Your Way
Around Common Worship (2011), addresses these concerns
BIBLE BREAK: STUDIES IN 1 CORINTHIANS
Monday 24 – Thursday 27 June
Venue: Sarum College
Led by: Stephen Barton
1 Corinthians gives us the most vivid insight of any New Testament text into the very
beginnings of Christianity and the impact of conversion to Christ on pagan lifestyles. This
study week will explore how the great apostle Paul struggled to shape the fractious
Corinthian Christians into a unity as ‘the body of Christ’. 1 Corinthians becomes like a
mirror in which we see reflections of ourselves
Stephen Barton taught Biblical Studies at Salisbury and Wells Theological College before
being appointed to the Theology Department of Durham University as Lecturer in New
Testament. He is an ordained priest and has served in parishes in Durham and Newcastle
‘THEREFORE CHOOSE LIFE’:
Defying the odds and embracing true hope over optimism
Date: Saturday 13 July
Venue: Lodge Farm, Broad Chalke
Led by: Darrell Weyman
The broad consensus of scientific opinion acknowledges that human-induced global
climate change is a reality. If unchecked the consequences for human society and the
environment will be massive. It seems increasingly unlikely that patterns of consumption
and atmospheric carbon emission will be reduced in time to stop at least major change, if
not catastrophic collapse. How are we, as a Christian community, developing a theology
and spirituality which will honestly acknowledge the problem and yet provide a realistic
pattern of living the gospel into this uncertain future
The day will include some input, time for discussion and reflective time and will aim to help
us think how we can begin to re-envision purpose and meaning within a radically
challenging socio-political future
Darrell was formerly Parish Priest of Marnhull. Now retired, he leads a contemplative life
and is interested in a radical spiritual approach to environmental issues
COOL IN THE HOT SEAT: FACILITATING GROUPS EXCELLENTLY
Saturday 16 November
St George’s Church, Fordington, Dorchester
Wednesday 20 November
Amesbury Baptist Church
Led by: Tony Nolan
Following the popular event on ‘Chairing meetings excellently’ we are now offering the
opportunity to grow your skills in ‘Facilitating groups excellently’. Groups at their best can
be enjoyable, creative and nurturing spaces. At their worst they can be dull, unproductive,
challenging or even threatening. The quality of the group experience is often determined
by way the group is facilitated – a task which often falls to clergy and lay ministers
Areas we will look at include understanding how groups function, establishing an
atmosphere of cooperation and collective ownership, working with difference,
understanding power, sharing responsibility and handling conflict
Tony is Programme Leader in Spirituality in Everyday life at Sarum College. He is an
experienced group facilitator, pastoral supervisor, spiritual director and supervisor of
directors. He is a member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, a religious order within
the Roman Catholic tradition
approaches which encourage positive communal engagement with liturgical change
MINISTRY CONSULTATIONS
TEAM MINISTRIES: MAKING THE MOST OF THE OPPORTUNITIES
A Consultation for Clergy in Team Ministries
Date: Thursday 31 January
Venue: Diocesan Education Centre, Wilton
Led by: David Durston
At their best Team Ministries are places where ministers find fulfilment in using their gifts
and skills in the service of the mission of the church. They bring a variety of talents and
perspectives, working with members of their congregations who are discovering and
developing their Christian calling and discipleship. In Team meetings they work together,
encouraging and offering helpful suggestions to each other. Team Ministries offer special
opportunities. A congregation of 200 can do a whole range of things that ten small
congregations of 20 would never think of doing on their own
In practice the pressure of events and constant demands make it very hard to realise
these opportunities. Meetings get filled up with details and rotas and the chance to work
together on something that feels really worthwhile is squeezed. This consultation will offer
ministers a space to look at the reasons why this happens and to work out how to make
best use the opportunities their Team Ministry offers
The consultation is open to all clergy working in Team Ministries. It is particularly
appropriate for clergy who have recently joined a Team Ministry, and for any who have not
been to a previous Consultation in this series. You may like to come as a Team, or you
may decide to ask two or three to come on your behalf, and to discuss what you worked
out at the Consultation when you meet for your next Team meeting. If it would be helpful
to your Team for Licensed Lay Ministers to come with the clergy because that is the way
you work as a Team, they will be very welcome
David was previously Team Rector of the Wylie and Till Valley Team and is now Team
Ministry Consultant in the Diocese of Salisbury. He is a passionate believer in the potential
of team working
of OLM group 2000
Monday 14 – Wednesday 16 October at Sarum College
Guest speakers:
The Rt Revd Nicholas Holtam, Bishop of Salisbury
The Reverend Canon Rosalind Brown, Canon Librarian of Durham Cathedral and
This residential consultation has been organised by the OLM Group of 2000, those who
were ordained Deacon in the Cathedral in 2003 and Priest in their parishes in 2004
In the last 10 years patterns of ministry have changed extensively and the Diocese of
Salisbury no longer has an OLM Scheme but locally deployable forms of ministry continue
to flourish and grow
This consultation will provide space to ask: Where are we now What are we now How
are we ministering and Where next It will also include worship and bible study and a
celebratory party on the second evening!
By invitation to the OLM group of 2000 and friends
PREPARING FOR RETIREMENT: a day for Associate Ministers
Date: Saturday 30 November
Venue: Sarum College
Led by: Jane Charman, Michael Turner and Alan Woods
Within the Region we regularly run consultations for stipendiary clergy who are preparing
for retirement from licensed ministry. Many of the areas covered, such as pensions and
housing, are not relevant to Associate Ministers. Other areas are very relevant, such as
understanding the spiritual and emotional impact of retirement and planning a different
pattern of ministry for the future. There are also areas which are particular to Associate
Ministers, such as the dynamic of retiring without moving away from the place where
ministry has been exercised
This day is an opportunity for Associate Ministers who are nearing retirement or who may
have retired recently to come together and share their experiences and good ideas about
how to make retirement a happy and fruitful experience
Jane is Director of Learning for Discipleship and Ministry and an experienced facilitator of
transition points learning. Michael and Alan are the Area Retirement Officers for Wilts and
Dorset respectively
By invitation to Associate Ministers
‘A MONTH IN MUNDRI’: opportunities to engage with South Sudan through learning
and teaching
Revd Jim Findlay (Salisbury) and Revd Tim Storey (Blandford) visited the town of Mundri
in Western Equatoria, South Sudan in October 2012. The primary purpose was to teach at
Bishop Ngalamu Theological College where 12 students from different dioceses are being
trained for the ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church of Sudan
Jim and Tim write
‘The visit was the first of what is hoped to become an annual trip to support the work of
that college and to continue to build on the already strong Salisbury – Sudan link.
Teaching was certainly the focus of the trip but the impact was deeper and the experience
much broader than the college classroom. This was a project that inaugurated new
friendships, deepened established ones and cemented the importance of the partnership
between our Diocese and The Episcopal Church of Sudan. It was personally enriching,
has already impacted the life of our churches back home and we hope contributed to the
on-going work of the link. I hope that our experiences in the church of the world’s newest
nation will inspire you and your church to get involved and be enriched.’
CHURCHES, CHEESES AND CIDERS OF NORMANDY
Led by Canon Peter Ball
Thursday 16th - Tuesday 21st May 2013
Normandy is known for its fine ancient churches, its Camembert, its cider and its
Calvados. On this trip you will sample them all, as well as experiencing the interest of the
area's towns and countryside. Among the features of the tour are visits to the fine ruins of
the Abbey at Jumièges and to the vibrant community of monks at the working monastery
of le Bec Hellouin. They have strong links with the Church of
England, and Canterbury in particular. We shall join with the brothers and sisters in their
Sunday Mass, as well as celebrating our Anglican Eucharist in some of the churches we
visit. The cathedrals of Rouen and Evreux and the Abbey at Bec are among the starred
visits in the Michelin guide book.
For many years there has been a warm twinning relationship between the French Roman
Catholic diocese of Evreux, which covers the department of Eure, and the Anglican
diocese of Salisbury. We hope to build on this with opportunities to meet with local
parishioners and share experiences of rural and town ministries with them.
offices), manual work and radical hospitality. The silence of the place makes it ideal for
study and reflection and its location deep in the west Dorset countryside makes it a great
Renaissance – a mid ministry course for the Southern Regional Institute
This programme is for you if you have been in stipendiary parochial ministry for at least 12
to15 years, are probably in your 50s and are beginning to think about how you want to
shape your ministry for the next phase. With retirement for many now looking as if it may
be 70 what does it mean to be in parochial ministry for the long haul
We shall provide an opportunity for you to:

Reflect about your ministry since your ordination, so that you can become more
aware of those aspects of ministry that renew you and those that drain you
Reflect about your original vocation to ordained ministry and how it continues to
sustain you or might need re-appraising in the light of experience
Think about new ministry skills you might like to develop for the next phase of your
ministry
Think about your life style as a minister and plan for it to be sustainable for the
future
The programme will include two 48 hour residentials at Sarum College. These residentials
will provide an opportunity to think and pray together about vocation and ministry, to share
in the worship of the cathedral and to make plans for further learning
Forthcoming dates:
Monday 11 – Wednesday 13 November 2013
Monday 10 – Wednesday 12 February 2014
Between the residentials is a phase of busy parochial ministry in which to monitor
reflections and learning from the first residential and prepare for the second. There may be
a chance to meet in small action learning groups between the residentials
The tutor team is:
Keith Lamdin, Principal of Sarum College,
ST JOHN’S COLLEGE NOTTINGHAM – IN SERVICE STUDY WEEKS
An ‘In Service Study Week’ (ISSW) offers you the opportunity for in-depth study of a topic of academic
interest relevant to the mission and ministry of the church today. Our In Service Study Weeks can be taken
in isolation, but also form modules in our BA in Theology for Ministry and MA in Mission and Ministry. If
you have an undergraduate diploma or foundation degree in theology, you can use these credits to
upgrade to a BA part time over two to three years. If you have already studied theology to degree level or
you have diploma level theology and a degree in another subject, you can take our MA part time over two
to four years as a way of refreshing and equipping for further ministry.
4 - 8 February 2013 Understanding Church
What is authentic church This question is vital for today and is being raised by the challenges and
opportunities of ‘pioneer ministry’, ‘fresh expressions’, growing churches and more traditional
congregations. In this module we seek to open this question and the issues surrounding it, and to bring
them into dialogue with a variety of recent ideas about what constitutes ‘church’ and how it relates to
mission and to the activity of God.
The Revd Dr David Hilborn is the new Principal of St John's and brings a wealth of experience in ministry
and theological education. He has also been the World Evangelical Alliance TheologicalCommission. David
will be joined by other Faculty staff
18 – 22 March 2013 The Bible in the Digital Age
This module will provide theological reflection on biblical literacy in contemporary culture with special
emphasis on the availability of the Bible, contemporary engagement with the Bible within the Church
community and engagement with the Bible in the arts and in the entertainment industry. As well as
developing your own understanding it will enable you to explore appropriate ways in which biblical literacy
can be fostered within these communities and its importance within the mission of the church in
tomorrow’s world.
The Revd Dr Pete Phillips is Director of Research at the Centre for Biblical Literacy and Communication in
Durham, working on a research initiative called CODEC, Christian Communication in the Digital Age
15 – 19 April 2013 Christian Apologetics in a Postmodern World
What does it mean for Christians to give a reason for the hope that is within them in our contemporary
world How has the rise of our modern world and its transformation into postmodernity affected the
defence of the faith What are the most pressing questions that challenge our faith today These are the
issues we will explore, examine, analyse and discuss with the help of multimedia resources.
The Revd Dr Tim Hull has a dual role at St John’s, working with Extension Studies, developing multimedia
teaching resources and as a lecturer in College in Philosophy and related areas of theology. He has a
particular interest in Christian apologetics relevant to our postmodern contexT
CLERGY APPOINTMENTS ADVISOR
The Clergy Appointments Adviser is appointed by and reports to the Archbishops. His
work is funded by the Church Commissioners and his task is to assist clergy to find new
appointments and to advise those making appointments of men and women available for
new work
He has particular responsibility for:
those returning to England after service overseas
clergy returning to the parochial ministry from specialist posts and from secular
employment
clergy recommended by their bishops, where the bishop is unable to offer a suitable
appointment within his diocese, or where a man or woman wishes or is willing to consider
work outside their present diocese
In addition to assisting those seeking incumbencies and posts of incumbent status the
Adviser is also available to advise those seeking unbeneficed posts in the parochial and
specialist ministries
The Advisor also advertises clergy jobs and vacancies in a regularly updated vacancy list
which is published on a fortnightly basis and can be viewed on the Church of England
website. Every month the Adviser also sends to all diocesan bishops and other major
patrons a General Circulation containing confidential papers about those who are available
for and seeking new appointments. References from the bishop and the referees
nominated are taken up and held in the office and are made available on request to those
who are considering offering an appointment
The Adviser is best able to assist those willing to consider work over a wide area of the
country. It is difficult to help those who in this 'Sheffield Age' limit themselves by seeking a
new appointment in just two dioceses in the South East, the Home Counties or the West of
England
The Adviser's work is accepted and welcomed as a normal part of the process by which
appointments are made in the Church of England. He visits diocesan staff meetings on a
regular basis and is in regular contact with a large number of other patrons including the
Crown and the Lord Chancellor's Ecclesiastical Patronage Secretaries
MINISTRY REVIEW
All licensed clergy participate in the Diocesan Ministry Review Scheme. Retired clergy with
Permission to Officiate may choose to participate if they wish. The Scheme offers a
Ministry Review every 18 months. This alternates between a Peer Review (conducted by a
Reviewer selected from the Diocesan list) and a Senior Staff Review (conducted by a
Bishop or Archdeacon or, by arrangement, by the Dean)
Full details of the Scheme including the Scheme Manual and associated paperwork are
available on the Diocesan website
Clergy exiting from IME Part 2, those new to the Diocese and any new Reviewers will be
invited to an induction event before participating in the Scheme
For all enquiries about the Scheme please contact the Learning for Discipleship and
Ministry Team Office on 01722 411944
or jane.charman@salisbury.anglican.org
MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT LEAVE
Ministry Development Leave (MDL) creates the possibility for those moving into a new
post or role to undertake a short period of targeted learning focussed specifically on their
new responsibilities
MDL recognises that Initial Ministerial Education cannot provide any of us with all the
knowledge and skills that we will need for a lifetime of ministry, especially as we cannot
know in advance where God may lead us. We need to be lifelong learners, regularly
undertaking new developmental learning and widening, enhancing and updating our skills.
This is particularly relevant at the point of moving to a new post or into a new role
MDL may be undertaken either before or after a move or change in ministry or by
arrangement it may be undertaken in the transition period between posts. It may take the
form of eg attending a course or conference, completing a module from a relevant
programme, arranging a short placement or working with a mentor or consultant. Some
funding is available at the discretion of the Diocese
MDL is negotiated with the Bishop and Archdeacons through the Director of Learning for
Discipleship and Ministry. Please contact the Learning for Discipleship and Ministry Team
Office for a preliminary conversation about your requirements
67
EXTENDED MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT LEAVE
Extended Ministry Development Leave (EMDL) can take many shapes and forms – such
as study, research, reading, rest, reflection, recreation, travel or pilgrimage. Ideally
everybody should have such a period of leave every seven years, following the biblical
principle of sabbatical. The intention is that EMDL should enrich a person’s spiritual life
and ministry in a deeper way than is usually possible through a regular holiday, retreat or
study period
The Diocese currently funds 8 EMDLs a year with a contribution of up to £1000 each.
These are normally granted after at least 11 years in stipendiary ministry (7 years after the
end of IME Part 2) and ideally every 7 years thereafter. EMDL is for a period of up to three
months. EMDL funding is sought after and there is usually a waiting list. Some people fund
or part fund their own EMDL or seek alternative funding from other sources which means
that EMDL can often be taken sooner
If you are considering taking EMDL it is important that you begin to plan around 2 years in
advance. You will need to seek the goodwill of the community in which you serve and of
your Rural Dean, Archdeacon, and Area Bishop. They will discuss with you how your
parochial or other responsibilities can be covered for the period of your absence. You will
then need to contact the Director of Learning for Discipleship and Ministry to begin
planning an application. Applications involving a request for funding are considered
towards the end of each year for the year next but one
CAREER MAKEOVER
We have recently developed several contacts with professional consultants who are able
to offer independent careers advice including a review of your CV and coaching on future
possibilities and opportunities
Our experience gained in professions and occupations before ordination can sometimes
feel lost in the busyness of ordained ministry and within the institution of the Church.
Situations may arise in which it could be beneficial to consider a placement outside of the
parish or local ministry environment, a secondment within a secular organization, or
perhaps a longer interlude in another sphere of work
This service should initially be discussed with the Director of Learning for Discipleship and
Ministry and will often emerge following a Ministry Review
68
INDIVIDUAL CONSULTANCY
The Diocese provides access to different kinds of individual support for those wishing to
work with a designated person on specific issues. Coaching, mentoring and work
consultancy can all be offered
WOMEN’S CONTINUING MINISTERIAL EDUCATION TRUST (WCMET)
Tim Ling writes: “I am writing to draw your attention to/remind you of the Women’s
Continuing Ministerial Education Trust (WCMET). The object of the Trust is to: ‘further the
continuing ministerial education of women in the Church of England and the Scottish
Episcopal Church by means of grants to assist their work and professional ministry.’
Applications require an endorsement from their CMD Officer – so the Trust’s operations
should be of interest to a lot of FM readers.
The last time I wrote about the WCMET was two years ago when we introduced a new
application form. I reported then that the Trust rejected approximately a third of
applications. Good news, it’s now less than 5%. We receive approximately 120
applications per annum and have limited funds that mean we do not have the resources to
fund all applications fully. It is therefore particularly helpful, if you are applying or endorsing
someone's application, that the application fits the Trust's criteria (NB the Trust does not
fund IME4-7) and that forms are filled as fully as possible, including attempts at
applications to other sources. This is particularly the case if the application is a piece of
ongoing study, e.g. a PhD of DMin. Please do keep applying if you are eligible!
WORK BASED LEARNING GROUPS
Reflective Practice is effective practice!
Ordained ministers need support to maintain a sense of authenticity and congruence in
their ministry, and integrity in their relationships. We believe that along with others involved
with pastoral care, those who are ordained can benefit from working together
The Work Based Learning Groups aim to reduce isolation, and by using a professional
facilitator from outside the authority structures of the church, provide a confidential setting
for development and change. They also offer a valuable model of group work skills
There are four venues in the Diocese where Work Based Learning Groups meet once a
month, (apart from August and December), for two years. They are strongly supported by
senior staff and group members are expected to take time out from their working week, not
days off, to attend. As groups come to the end of their life together other groups will come
on stream and existing members can apply to join a new group if they wish
There is a minimal charge of £5 per session.
ABOUT WELLBEING
As the church, visible in the Diocese of Salisbury, we affirm that our wellbeing is essential
to our ministry and mission as the people of God. It is an integral part of that formation
which enables us to grow into the full stature of Christ and be his vibrant presence in the
world. It is through loving and caring for one another and ourselves that we witness to our
love of God. It is with these deeply held beliefs that we offer a range of wellbeing
resources, calling one another into renewed commitment to the life-long process of
growing in wholeness of ministry
Our Diocesan view of wellbeing is one of on-going formation, expressed through the
following diverse, far reaching and interdependent areas: my role (professional
development); my relationships (interacting with others); myself (self awareness and care)
Wellbeing seeks to respond to the above by:
Modelling work life balance and honouring the integrity of the person in all areas of our
common life
Making provision for the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of our ministers
Developing a culture of care and support amongst colleagues with particular emphasis on
the life of Chapters
Providing access to appropriate forms of confidential care and help for those who need
them
Providing the opportunity for sharing and exploring work and personal issues in the context
of work based learning groups
Offering through the CMD programme events and opportunities which are nurturing and
restorative as well as educational and developmental
The Wellbeing coordinating group is: Paul Taylor (Convenor), John Tomlinson,
Fiona Fox, Jane Culliford, Charles Booth, Julie Walker, Paul Sutcliffe, Richard
Hovey, Susan Beckett and Jane Charman
CONFIDENTIAL CARE
Confidential care and help is available to ministers and their families who are experiencing
difficulties which adversely affect their wellbeing
Confidential care may take many forms including help with health concerns, family and
relationship matters, finances, work issues, addictions, grieving, stress or any personal
matter
The Diocese has a range of professional contacts some of whom offer their services as
part of the ministry they exercise. A professional fee is not always needed but where
payment is requested, and is difficult, discretionary funding is often available
MINISTRY OF DELIVERANCE
Our experience as a Diocesan Deliverance Group is that the dominant culture of scientific
materialism has all too often left the Church without the confidence to speak of the reality
of evil in a way that is pastorally and practically helpful to those spiritually afflicted or
oppressed by evil
Both within the Church and as importantly outside there are many oppressed by evil spirits
or harmed by occult involvement and others disturbed within their homes by the spiritual
traces of past trauma
Careful listening and spiritual discernment, often within the context of collaboration with
medical and other professional support, may allow the root underlying such suffering to be
exposed and God’s healing grace to flourish
The Diocesan Deliverance Group is available to help where needed
Contact John Whittle on 07971 080682 or johnwwhittle@hotmail.com
MINISTRY OF HEALING
Wholeness and healing are at the heart of all ministry. The Wholeness and Healing Team
have advisors and convenors of groups in each archdeaconry to encourage and develop
this ministry across the diocese with events, advice and training
For more information about the work of the Wholeness and Healing Team contact
Jane Culliford on 01305 264360 or janeculliford@aol.com
RETREATS
It is expected that all stipendiary clergy will make an annual retreat, typically the inside of a
week, and other clergy and ministers are encouraged to do the same. At present there is
no Diocesan funding available for retreats but parishes are asked to treat ministerial
retreats as an expense of office
The Retreat Association is a registered charity and is an excellent source of information
with downloadable publications about all aspects of making a retreat and online links to
many retreat centres nationwide. You can also order a copy of their annual journal
SPIRITUAL DIRECTION
The Diocese operates the Salisbury Spidir Web, a network for spiritual direction
The purpose of the Web is:
To maintain a list of those offering the ministry of spiritual direction and to support
those ministers in their continuing training and supervision
To receive requests from anyone living within the geographical area covered by the
Diocese who is seeking a spiritual director and to advise them upon a suitable
choice
Anyone seeking a spiritual director should contact:
Revd Ian Cowley
Diocesan Co-ordinator for Vocations and Spirituality
Learning for Discipleship and Ministry Team Office
01722 411944 or ian.cowley@salisbury.anglican.org
Ian would also like to hear from anyone offering the ministry of spiritual direction. He is
also able to advise on existing spiritual direction networks, on training courses and on
support for those offering this ministry
VOYAGE ON THE MORNING STAR
It has been suggested that some clergy families might enjoy a sea voyage and opportunity
to socialise with one another. While we don’t think we can fund this through CMD we
would be very willing to help a group of families set this up. If you are interested please let
us know
Morning Star of Revelation is a 62ft gaff ketch and belongs to a Christian Trust. She can
set up to eight sails at any one time on her two masts and was purpose built for sail
training; this ensures plenty of work to occupy a full crew of 14. She can sail in almost any
conditions, anywhere, anytime
Morning Star has made a number of voyages for us in the past, both around the coast and
cross channel. Her skipper is Revd Steve Morgan, Rector of the St Bartholomew Benefice.
Before ordination Steve was principal of a yachting school. He is still registered as an
instructor and examiner for yachts up to 200 tons. For further details go to
www.morningstar.org.uk
