Could it <strong>be</strong> <strong>you</strong>?What is a priest (or presbyter)The ministry of priest <strong>be</strong>longs <strong>to</strong> the ancient threefold order of bishops, priestsand deacons. It is an order of ministry that the Church of England shares withthe majority of the world’s Christians.The priest (or presbyter) is ordained by the church <strong>to</strong> lead <strong>God</strong>’s people in<strong>to</strong> anever deeper relationship of love for <strong>God</strong> and for his world.The priest is the minister of the sacraments, presiding at the Eucharist, blessingthe people in <strong>God</strong>’s name and pronouncing <strong>God</strong>’s forgiveness of their sins.<strong>Priest</strong>hood is about the deepening of relationships: relationships <strong>be</strong>tween <strong>God</strong>and his people and <strong>be</strong>tween the people themselves.Through word and sacrament, through prayers of intercession, and throughpas<strong>to</strong>ral care, the priest shares in Christ’s ministry of reconciliation,transforming, strengthening and building up the whole people of <strong>God</strong> <strong>to</strong> realizetheir own priestly ministry.What’s in a name?A vicar is always a priest – but a priest is notalways a vicar.If <strong>you</strong> asked an average person <strong>to</strong> descri<strong>be</strong> apriest they would descri<strong>be</strong> a vicar.A vicar or rec<strong>to</strong>r is a priest who is given particularresponsibility by the bishop for a parish or <strong>be</strong>nefice.So in addition <strong>to</strong> their role as a priest, they alsohave a bishop-like role in leading and <strong>be</strong>ingpas<strong>to</strong>rally responsible for an area, usually aparish or a num<strong>be</strong>r of parishes.Some priests are paid <strong>to</strong> work inparishes or as chaplains in schools,hospitals, prisons or the armedservices. Some priests, whilstministering in a parish, earn theirliving in a secular job.The work of a priest is varied anddemanding yet few other occupationscan <strong>be</strong> so rewarding.After a period of preparation, candidates for ordained ministry attend aBishop’s Advisory Panel organised by the Ministry Division of the Churchof England. Those recommended for training by the panel may either go<strong>to</strong> a residential college or train part time.What can I do next?Ask <strong>God</strong> in prayer… how <strong>you</strong> may <strong>be</strong>come all that <strong>God</strong> intends <strong>you</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> andhow <strong>be</strong>st <strong>you</strong> may serve him.Reflect on <strong>you</strong>r gifts … are <strong>you</strong> able <strong>to</strong> engage with people and share <strong>you</strong>rfaith? Are <strong>you</strong> someone with caring skills and a willingness <strong>to</strong> support others?Or are <strong>you</strong> creative, or a natural leader?Talk <strong>to</strong> <strong>you</strong>r parish priest or chaplain … who will <strong>be</strong> able <strong>to</strong> advise <strong>you</strong>and put <strong>you</strong> in <strong>to</strong>uch with a Vocations Adviser.Attend a Diocesan Vocations Day … held regularly throughout theyear.
