There are parallels between hunting and the practice of law, according to Gregory Shamoun, the managing partner of Shamoun & Norman in Dallas. And his lion hunt in Zimbabwe confi rmed it. As part of a 30-day safari Shamoun took with his 13-year-old son in August of 2013, Shamoun was able to accomplish his goal — hunting a truly wild, fair chase lion on the Matetsi Unit #5, a more than 1,000,000-acre government-owned territory where there are only two male lion tags awarded each year. “I insisted that if I was going to pursue the king of the jungle, it was going to be on a level playing fi eld,” he said. “It was the real deal and about as primitive of a safari as one could do. We hunted this lion for six days — I was worn out. He was old, he had been kicked out of the pride and was out on his own with another male lion.” Some of the traditional hunting methods didn’t work. “We tried zebra bait and kudu bait,” Shamoun said, “but we didn’t have any success in the blind and we had no trail camera pictures of the lion coming to the bait.” On the sixth day, the group was planning to head to another area, feeling the lion had moved on. “We checked baits before moving camps, and lo and behold, while driving about six miles from our bait site, we saw him at 11:15 a.m. walking up a ridge.” They stopped and glassed the lion and confi rmed it was the old male. “We moved closer and got within 175 yards,” Shamoun said. “I was able to take him with my .375 off of the sticks and he didn’t go far.” When he reached the 560-pound beast, Shamoun was overcome by its size. “It was shocking to see an animal that massive,” he said. “It was the fi rst time I had touched a lion. It was mentally challenging to absorb how massive he was. I marveled at the size of his ankles, his paws, his teeth and his head. He was all scratched up and his mane stopped at his elbows. I thought about all that old fella had gone through.” Shamoun heaped praised on his PH and his outfi tter. “My PH, Dean Kendall, probably is the number one cat PH in all of Zimbabwe,” he said. “And Paul Stones Safaris out of South Africa was the most professional, organized and diligent outfi

There is a reason
so many
Texas ranches
use AntlerMax
protein deer feeds.
Whether the ranch is
low or high fenced,
AntlerMax is the top
choice of ranch managers
and wildlife biologists
when it comes to
supplementing native
habitat and promoting
overall herd health and
antler growth in their
deer herd.
“After 25 year of
managing high-fence
and low-fence ranches
and using protein feed
vs. nonfeed, AntlerMax
supplementation puts
on more ounces per
linear inch of antler
then any other feed on
the market,” said Chris
Huey, wildlife biologist
at the Chaparrosa
Ranch in South Texas.
Purina is the leader
in deer nutrition and research.
The difference
between AntlerMax and
other deer feeds on the
market is their patented
AntlerMax By-Pass
Protein and Mineral
Technology. Developed
in 1995 as an innovative
first from Purina, the technology promotes antler growth by improving the protein
quality ingested by the deer. AntlerMax underwent a major improvement last year and
enhancements will continue as new research information becomes available.
“Dietary protein from traditional deer pellets and from ingested plants in the habitat is
typically broken down by bacteria in the deer’s rumen. The deer then digests the bacteria
in its small intestine,” said Dr. Larry Varner, Purina’s wildlife nutritionist. “But the quality
of the dietary protein can be degraded by these bacteria, potentially leaving less of
the high-quality amino acids available for antler growth.”
Purina’s AntlerMax By-Pass Proteins are protected from being broken down by these
bacteria, as they bypass the bacteria in the rumen, so the high-quality amino acids are
digested in the small intestine, which can support greater antler growth.
Science aside, AntlerMax works — and the deer like it, said Ben Binnion, biologist/
foreman at the Paloma Ranch.
“The best part about it is the consistency of the feed pellet,” Binnion said. “The deer
take to it really quick, even when they are first-time feeders.”
Binnion said he likes how Purina devotes so much attention to research to develop
a feed specifically for the entire deer herd in the region where they live, along with the
customer service received from Purina’s staff.
Purina understands that different parts of the country have different nutritional
strengths and weaknesses. That is one reason why some areas raise big deer and others
do not. AntlerMax diets are regionally formulated based on extensive analysis of deer
livers that highlight regional mineral deficiencies. Purina AntlerMax diets help meet the
regional mineral deficiencies. The unique combination of AntlerMax By-Pass Protein
Technology, Mineral Technology, Nutritional Enhancements and Regional Formulations
results in a premium feed, designed specifically for deer.
In addition, Purina’s AntlerMax feeds include proprietary levels and ratios of essential
minerals, including chelated minerals, that help maximize every buck’s genetic potential
for antler growth while supporting reproductive performance in does and helping to
produce strong, healthy fawns.
Huey said the better feed equals healthier deer.
“More density and longer points equals a larger B&C score,” he said. “Data doesn’t lie
— and that’s a fact!”
If you are interested in starting a supplemental feeding program on your property,
feel free to reach out to your local Purina Dealer or contact Scott Hohensee. He may be
A level playing field: From lion hunt
to law firm’s practice
{
There are parallels between hunting and the practice of law, according to Gregory
Shamoun, the managing partner of Shamoun & Norman in Dallas. And his lion
hunt in Zimbabwe confirmed it.
As part of a 30-day safari Shamoun took with his 13-year-old son in August of
2013, Shamoun was able to accomplish his goal — hunting a truly wild, fair chase lion on
the Matetsi Unit #5, a more than 1,000,000-acre government-owned territory where there
are only two male lion tags awarded each year.
“I insisted that if I was going to pursue the king of the jungle, it was going to be on a
level playing field,” he said. “It was the real deal and about as primitive of a safari as one
could do. We hunted this lion for six days — I was worn out. He was old, he had been
kicked out of the pride and was out on his own with another male lion.”
Some of the traditional hunting methods didn’t work.
“We tried zebra bait and kudu bait,” Shamoun said, “but we didn’t have any success in
the blind and we had no trail camera pictures of the lion coming to the bait.”
On the sixth day, the group was planning to head to another area, feeling the lion had
moved on.
“We checked baits before moving camps, and lo and behold, while driving about six
miles from our bait site, we saw him at 11:15 a.m. walking up a ridge.”
They stopped and glassed the lion and confirmed it was the old male.
“We moved closer and got within 175 yards,” Shamoun said. “I was able to take him with
my .375 off of the sticks and he didn’t go far.”
When he reached the 560-pound beast, Shamoun was overcome by its size.
“It was shocking to see an animal that massive,” he said. “It was the first time I had
touched a lion. It was mentally challenging to absorb how massive he was. I marveled at the
size of his ankles, his paws, his teeth and his head. He was all scratched up and his mane
stopped at his elbows. I thought about all that old fella had gone through.”
Shamoun heaped praised on his PH and his outfitter.
“My PH, Dean Kendall, probably is the number one cat PH in all of Zimbabwe,” he said.
“And Paul Stones Safaris out of South Africa was the most professional, organized and
diligent outfitter one could hire. The camp was first-class, the food spectacular and the staff
five-star.”
Back at the camp, the celebration began.
“The wives and children of those that work at Matetsi came and were singing and dancing,”
Shamoun said. “I learned that lions and the other cats have been brutalizing livestock,
children and camps for centuries so bringing one in leads to a remarkable celebration.”
Shamoun and his son also bagged a cape buffalo, two kudus, two zebras, two impalas, a
waterbuck, baboon and serval cat on the adventure.
Shamoun relates the hunting of a wild, male lion to being successful in the practice of
law. His firm, Shamoun Norman, handles primarily high-stakes litigation.
“We as a law firm have spent more than 25 years hunting for our clients,” he said. “The
preparation and strategy of hunting a wild, male lion are the same I utilize in hunting for
my clients for justice. An animal doesn’t care what your name is or how much money you
have. You’re in their backyard.
“My firm believes that when we are in the hunt, we want a level playing field and a
proper hunt for justice.”
Success of Lone Star Outdoor News
Foundation adds lifelong outdoorsmen
When Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation scheduled its first group of hunters
in late October of 2013, the hope was to introduce some new people to deer
hunting and create new hunting and fishing opportunities.
Less than one year later, the goal for the first group was achieved. The
parents of three of the four youngsters who hunted last year spent $10,000 each to join a
10,000-acre lease in Webb County and provide hunting opportunities for their children.
A year later, several other new hunters have become hooked for life, and are pestering
their fathers for leases and more hunts.
The foundation began after observing the need to get people introduced to hunting and
fishing — people who have the desire but lack the opportunity.
Jim O’Connor attributed their hunt with LSONF to the future of he and his son, Nick, in
in deer hunting.
“My son has really gotten into it,” he said. “I didn’t have anyone who took me hunting
when I was growing up. I’m trying my best to get Nick more acclimated than I was.”
LSONF has successfully raised money to help. With two corporate sponsors, Cabela’s
Outdoor Fund and the Texas Deer Association, along with numerous generous individual
donors, the season is booked full of hunters seeking their first buck. The Lone Star
Outdoor News Wild Game Supper, held at the Beretta Gallery in Dallas with food from
Cinnamon Creek Wild Game Processing, raised more than $11,000 for the foundation
earlier this year.
Other charities have asked how to do it.
“You just have to work hard and be willing to donate all of your time and spend a bunch
of your own money,” said LSONF board member David J. Sams.
Still, more opportunities are out there, and people are still waiting for their first chance
to become hunters for a lifetime.
“We are seeking more corporate sponsors and donors,” said LSONF Executive Director
Craig Nyhus. “Several other ranch owners have seen what we are doing and are offering
their support — we can triple the number of people we are taking now.”
The foundation’s mission statement is about opportunities for all, not just the young. A
72-year-old Vietnam veteran who had never seen a big buck while hunting completed a
hunt in December. A big, wide buck came into view, but the excitement was too much —
and he missed.
Hunters scheduled the remainder of this season include a Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department urban biologist and a graduate wildlife biology student at Sul Ross State
University, both women, who have never hunted.
LSONF has added three new board members, David Sweet, Don Draeger and Sidney
Junek, with an eye on expanding hunting and fishing opportunities across the state.
Hunters from the past two seasons, who have already contributed more than $100,000
back into the hunting industry, couldn’t agree more.
Two hunters arrived last year with brand new rifles and gear. Rifles, binoculars and
rangefinders were the topic of discussions in the deer blind. Mostly, though, the discussions
were about finding a place to hunt in the future.
“After my son’s first hunt, we are getting on a lease with a group of neighbors,” said
Vincent Prejean of Little Elm. “I never thought I would become a hunter.”
Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization with a mission
to create hunting and fishing opportunities, benefit youth education, and support
wildlife research and outdoor journalism. To donate, call (214) 361-2276, visit lsonews.
Patagonia: The land
of free-roaming giant
stags
{
The best
and biggest
population of
free-ranging
red deer awaits at Algar
Safaris in Patagonia,
Argentina, a true hunting
paradise.
Patagonia is characterized
by wide-open,
very large ranges, and
hunting areas at Algar
Safaris amass 85,000
acres, where trophies of
superior quality may be
pursued in fair chase
environments. The
Leupold VX-6
riflescope: The
pinnacle of {sporting optics
Leupold has been developing cutting-edge optics since the 1940s, so it is no
surprise that they have done it again with their top of the line VX-6 riflescopes.
Designed, machined and assembled at their state-of-the-art facility
in Beaverton, Oregon, the Leupold VX-6 represents the pinnacle of sporting
optics.
The VX-6 is available in five magnification ranges from the versatile 1-6x24mm
to the jaw-dropping power of the 7-42x56mm. With a large selection of reticle
choices, both illuminated and non-illuminated, there is bound to be the perfect
VX-6 for you.
Leupold didn’t pull any punches when designing this line of riflescopes. They began
with a one-piece maintube crafted out of aircraft grade aluminum for unrivaled
durability. Available in 30mm and 34mm diameters, they offer plenty of windage
and elevation adjustment for the longest of shots. From there, lead-free, edge-blackened
lenses with Xtended Twilight and DiamondCoat 2 lens coatings optimize light
transmission in low-light conditions, provide unparalleled scratch resistance and offer
a crystal clear image throughout the magnification range. The extreme fast-focus
eyepiece makes reticle focus easy to achieve and maintain in the field.
Available with 1/4 Minute of Angle (MOA) or 1/8 MOA elevation and 1/4 MOA
windage adjustments, depending on model, all VX-6 riflescopes are Custom Dial
System capable and come with one free CDS dial custom engraved to your load’s
ballistics through the Leupold Custom Shop. When used with a Leupold RX rangefinder
equipped with TBR, the CDS system takes the guesswork out of long-range
shooting by having yardage engraved on the dial for fast, easy elevation adjustment.
It truly is as easy as range, dial and shoot.
Select models offer the all-new Wind-Plex reticle and the CDS-ZL (Zero Lock) elevation
dial. The Wind-Plex reticle has hash marks spaced at 1 MOA intervals along
the horizontal stadia that aid in windage holds when it is blowing outside. While the
CDS-ZL elevation dial allows the shooter to return to zero without over-rotating and
when zeroed it locks into place preventing inadvertent dial rotation in the field.
The illuminated VX-6 scopes feature Leupold’s exclusive FireDot illumination system.
The one-button, low-profile design gives the shooter 12 illumination settings to
choose from, plus Motion Sensor Technology that deactivates the illumination after
five minutes of inactivity and instantly reactivates it as soon as movement is detected.
Should the VX-6 be a long-range model, the side focus dial is placed around
the illumination control for fast and simple one-handed operation.
The final step in completing the VX-6 riflescope is to purge it of its internal oxygen
and replace it with Leupold’s exclusive Argon/Krypton gas blend. This gas blend
is more resistant to thermal shock and diffusion than the traditionally used nitrogen
gas, delivering 100-percent waterproof integrity.
So the next time you are in the market for a “Top Shelf” riflescope, take a look
through the Leupold VX-6. If you can’t get it done with a VX-6, there’s no point in
trying.
The most luxurious
hunting train in the
world
Rovos Rail’s Pride of Africa is a restored 1920s vintage Edwardian train complete with
original dining and observation cars. From the observation car complete with a viewing
deck, to the dining car with linen-covered tables set with fine china and crystal,
to each well-appointed stateroom with its private bath, the Rovos Rail is a study
in elegance. Add an attentive staff and all the elements are in place for travel on what many
consider the most luxurious train in the world.
The Rovos Rail shooting safaris have been in operation since the early 1990s. The concept
has been wildly successful — combine luxury train travel that includes exquisite cuisine, the
best wines and spirits, and a full program for the ladies with world-class hunting, and you have
the ultimate field sports vacation.
Each journey offers two options. One is for wingshooting: driven guinea fowl and francolin,
decoyed pigeons, and high-volume dove and waterfowl action. The second option is for plains
game: kudu, impala, blesbok, hartebeest, nyala, eland and springbok are just a few of the species
available.
When the time comes to board, a red carpet shows the way and champagne cocktails are
served while the luggage is whisked away to your stateroom. Your journey takes you from
Pretoria to the bushveldt and farmlands of the North West province, the diamond fields of the
Northern Cape, and the rich game lands of the Free State before finally returning you to the
Pretoria Station.
The first shooting day starts with a sumptuous breakfast and rich Kenyan coffee before
disembarkment. Your local host is waiting, and after boarding the Land Rovers, it’s a 30-minute
drive to the first shoot. Not far from Mafikeng, the highway is left behind as you enter
a mixture of verdant farmland, open grasslands and acacia woodlands. This is wild country
where game birds share the bushveldt with kudu, bushbuck and bushpigs, and agricultural
lands coexist with native habitats.
The first two days are devoted to guinea fowl shooting. Guineas are strong-flying game birds
that are at their best when driven by 60–100 beaters towards a waiting line of guns. Generally,
there are four drives before the midday lunch break, then two or three in the afternoon. Typically,
eight guns account for 200-plus guinea fowl and a few francolin. Now that’s world-class
driven shooting, especially when considering that the birds are all wild.
In addition to the driven days, there are two days of dove and pigeon action. The shooting
is near Bloemfontein, an agricultural region where sunflower, soybeans, corn and wheat are
the primary crops. As a result, huge concentrations of rock pigeons and doves (Cape turtle,
laughing and red-eye) descend on the area to take advantage of the abundant waste grain. The
shooting peaks in May and June when the sunflower crop is harvested. The shooting is often
hot-barreled and it’s easy to shoot 500 or more rounds in a day. The pigeons are hunted over
decoys and the doves are flighted.
One day is devoted to waterfowl shooting in the Northern Cape near Kimberly. The goose
hunting is over decoys while flighted ducks round out the day’s action.
The plains game option offers visits to three or four properties during the course of the eightday
trip. Clients are met at the train by a professional hunter and transported to the hunting
area. The guiding is on a one-on-one basis. One of the largest properties is the Wintershoek
Game Reserve, about a 30-minute drive from Kimberley. Wintershoek covers more than
132,000 acres characteristic of the region, including flat, open thornveldt, savanna, semiarid
desert, mountains and rocky hills, and both mopane and miombo woodlands. The plains game
hunters can harvest a dozen species including sable, kudu, impala, nyala, red hartebeest,
eland, warthog, springbok, blue wildebeest, black wildebeest and blesbok.
Each day, the nonshooters have their own guided program that includes visits to Boer War
battlefields, art museums, spa visits, shopping and game drives. The nonshooters join the
guns in the field for a half-day of shooting and the midday meal while everyone on board
spends a day touring the Diamond Mine Museum and Big Hole in Kimberley. The trip is designed
with both shooters and nonshooters in mind, with outstanding programs for both.
Rovos Rail truly provides the finest safaris available. With fast-paced hunts, unforgettable
destinations, and incredible accommodations aboard the most luxurious train in the world,
they are something you must experience firsthand. Booking now for 2015 & 2016.
Montana Watch Co. unveils inspired
new line, the Cattleman Watch
The Montana Watch Company is proud to introduce the Cattleman Watch line in
tribute to the historic men whose entrepreneurial spirit and drive to succeed, despite
challenging environmental conditions, forever shaped the culture and values of the
American West.
Available in three variations: The Classic Cattleman, The Cowboy, and The Lonesome
Dove… each with unique elements reminiscent of the inspirational cattlemen of yesterday and
today.
• The Classic Cattleman embodies clean yet traditional design components easily
identifiable with Western Americana and offers an excellent canvas ready to be enriched with
custom personal touches chosen to best reflect the distinctive taste of its proud owner. Quintessential
symbol of the American West, the American cattleman conjures up romantic images
of rugged western adventure.
• The Cowboy is emblazoned with a “Riding for the Brand” inscription framed with
Western Single Point hand engraving and a custom black dial with the mysterious Montana
Vigilante code, 3-7-77. Long heralded as the Cowboy’s creed, “Riding for the Brand,” a phrase
first coined by novelist Louis L’amour,
beautifully encapsulates the code of
the western cowboy including values
such as discipline, hard work, honesty
and loyalty to the brand. This
watch is a true testament to these
amazing individuals.
• The Lonesome Dove features
a 14-karat gold hand-sculpted
Texas Lone Star overlay with a handturned
gold rope circling the bezel,
and is finished with Western Bright
Cut hand-engraving and a custom
gold dial. Capturing the pride of the
Cattleman, the Lonesome Dove is
a nod to the rich Texas/ Montana
connection that began with Nelson
Story, the first Cattleman to drive
more than 1,000 head of Texas
longhorn cattle along the Bozeman
Trail. Traveling from Texas to the lush
Gallatin Valley in Montana in 1866,
Story’s herd formed one of the earliest
significant herds in Montana’s
cattle history.
Every Cattleman Watch begins with a 48mm case machined from solid sterling silver, and
is adorned with Saddle Horn lugs and a 14-karat gold winding crown. Inside beats a 17 jewel,
Swiss ETA hand-wound movement, cal. 6498, protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal,
and visible through an optional exhibition display case back. A custom hand-tooled saddle
leather strap and matching sterling silver buckle properly finishes this spectacular watch.
The Montana Watch Company was conceived more than 15 years ago from watchmaker
Jeffrey Nashan’s passion for recreating early American timepieces, which often inherit the
characteristic western charm of the company’s birthplace. Early collaborations with master
artisans lead Nashan to specialize in customization, and Montana Watch Company has since
emerged as the premier custom watch manufacturer in the U.S.A.
“I created the Montana Watch Company to rekindle the great American heyday of watch
manufacturing,” Nashan said. “All of the custom handwork, many of the components that go
into each Montana Watch Company timepiece, and all of the cases, which are machined from
solid stock, are fabricated in the U.S.”
Each extraordinary timepiece is
designed and individually handcrafted
by Nashan in his Livingston, Montana
studio. His expanding Classic Collection
includes 10 watch models whose
inspiration sprang from different
historic American watches. Nashan’s
new model, The Cattleman Watch, is no
exception.
Montana Watch Company has proudly
supported the Dallas Safari Club Convention
as an exhibitor for many years.
“The Dallas Safari Club Convention is
the perfect place to unveil the Cattleman
Watch,” Nashan said.
The first Lonesome Dove variation
has been proudly donated, and will be
available in the Saturday evening live
auction.
Rifles, Inc. A quarter
century of building
{custom lightweight rifles
{
Master Rifle Maker Lex Webernick has been an exhibitor at the Dallas Safari Club
annual convention since 1988. Many a DSC member and convention attendee has
discovered the joy of carrying and hunting with a custom-made, lightweight rifle
from his company, Rifles, Inc.
“It is always exciting being at the convention,” Webernick said. “I really like the Dallas Safari
Club Convention being early — everyone has just finished hunting or are still hunting. And
hunting is still on everyone’s mind.”
Webernick keeps abreast of the current trend in rifles, and said rifles for long-range shooting
is the hot topic this year.
“When I have someone gearing towards long-range shooting, I normally try to find out their
primary focus and keep the rifle to where it’s still a hunting rifle that can take a turn at long
range,” he said. “These are questions that I like to address in my conversations preceding a
rifle order. My specialty is always going to be lightweight hunting rifles — as a hunter — that is
where my passion lies.”
Webernick crafts each rifle with attention to details such as stock fit, rifle balance and now
that he is doing Cerakote metal finishes in-house, he can
come up with different color options.
“With all of these choices — it still comes down to
getting the rifle balanced in the shooter’s hand so that it’s
easy to aim, comfortable to shoot and a pleasure to carry,”
he said. “As we all know, we carry them a lot more than
we shoot.”
Despite all of the new calibers and trends, in more than
25 years, Webernick has still built one custom gun the
most often, the .300 Win Mag.
“It’s just a well-rounded cartridge that you can take and
hunt most anything with in North America,” he said.
Webernick and his wife, Lina, invite you to come by the
booth to visit about rifle projects and pick up his new DVD
and hear his motto.
“My goal is to build you the perfect hunting rifle.”
Texas has big muleys You bet.
{
Texas might not have the reputation as a destination to hunt big mule
deer. But Lone Star State hunters who head to the Panhandle or Trans-
Pecos region know the truth.
Texas has some giant mule deer.
Nobody knows that better than Rick Merritt. Merritt is one of the best mule
deer hunters in the state, consistently taking big Panhandle bucks. This year
was no different, when Merritt connected on a giant nontypical buck early in
the season.
“Normally, early in the season when MLDP kicks in, people will start sending
me pictures. The guys I hunt with had a big deer on camera, and I went out
to hunt him. He was a big typical we thought might go in the 230s. The buck
was on camera every night until two days before the season. I suspect he might
have been poached.”
However, the hunting gods were smiling on Merritt when, several days later,
despite not having seen any rutting activity at all due to high temperatures, he
came across a hot doe with the monster nontypical trailing her.
“It was a fluke deal,” he said. “Nobody had ever seen this buck.”
Merritt made a good shot and walked up to one of the biggest bucks ever
killed in the state.
“The bases measured 9 and 11 inches,” he said. “We rough-scored the buck at 265 inches, which
would be number 2 all-time in Texas. He was an older buck — between 8 and 10 years old — and he was
blind in one eye. The base (on one of his antlers) was pushed down over the eye.”
Although the Trans-Pecos region has been hit by a severe drought the past couple of years, some good
bucks fell this past season, including a huge 180-class typical taken by Louisiana hunter Garrett Prather.
“We were hunting the Delaware Mountain Ranch and we could see Guadalupe Peak from the ranch,”
the Baton Rouge hunter said. “The owner of the ranch was telling us where to go and look for big bucks,
and he mentioned his nephew had passed a big buck earlier in the season. We think this was the deer he
passed.”
Prather said he hunted hard for more than two days, but could not locate a mature buck.
“There was no rutting activity going on,” he said. “During 2 1/2 days, we hadn’t seen a shooter. We
found this buck at 1:30 in the afternoon lying under a cedar tree, which is where we found most of the
deer — lying down. I couldn’t see his entire rack; we just knew he was really wide.”
The 6 1/2-year-old buck ended up scoring 186, and the quality of the West Texas bucks shocked
Prather.
“I was unbelievably surprised at the trophy quality,” he said. “I never expected a buck like that.”
The new 8x zoom scope by
Schmidt & Bender
There cannot be any doubt that the people of Schmidt & Bender are true experts in building scopes with high zoom factors, innovative functions and brilliant
optical quality.
With the 1-8x24 Exos, again new standards in hunting are being set with regard to functionality, design and quality.
Functionality at its finest! For the very first time, a 2-in-1 solution of a reflector sight integrated into the scope is offered here. It only takes a slight turn of the
magnification ring and the scope turns into a genuine red dot sight — made possible by an innovative patented technology. The red dot in the second focal plane is now
parallax-free and allows for a shot at very close range; the magnification setting is 1.0 — which is perfect for focusing quickly with both eyes open. The scope is an ideal
tool for a driven hunt because of its superior imaging performance as it provides the hunter a brilliant field of view until the edge. The large exit pupil diameter of 9.6mm
at the smallest magnification setting is optically corrected to its optimum and makes a quick target acquisition possible for the swift shot.
If greater distances are desired, another slight turn of the magnification ring is needed until a soft click indicates the 1.1x magnification setting. In doing so, the parallax
setting returns to 100m, and the acquisition of far-away targets becomes easily possible. Even at a magnification setting of 8x, the superior optics is readily noticeable
due to an extremely bright image that is also rich in contrast.
Since the introduction of Schmidt & Bender’s unique FlashDot technology, a red dot in the second image plane has been standard. A projected red dot is used for best
viewing results and reaches a maximum in brightness as well as perfect roundness and allows, of course, for a dimming of the illumination in 11 settings — necessary
for twilight conditions.
On account of the Zenith line, the Posicon-adjustment is already well-known and has proven itself. The truly unique part of this adjustment is the indicator
that tells the gunsmith or hunter when horizontal and lateral adjustments come in conflict with one another.
The individual who is interested in shooting greater distances has the option of acquiring a quick-adjuster for windage and
elevation corrections. This accessory may be ordered from Schmidt & Bender with a personal engraving.
The slender and elegant design of this extreme zoom scope is surprising! It is hardly conceivable that such an 8x zoom
can be housed in a 30mm diameter tube.
Together with the anodized magnification ring, an incredibly beautiful and elegant design has been created that is a
true decoration for every hunting rifle.
And the best part: The scope is already in stock and ready for delivery.
Quail, pheasant
and more at
Wildcat Creek
Quail and pheasant hunters need not travel far to experience a memorable hunt,
luxurious facilities and fabulous food. Wildcat Creek Quail Hunting Resort has birds
at the ready — where a memorable quail or pheasant hunting adventure awaits.
For wingshooters who favor the pheasant, full pheasant hunts have been offered
the past two seasons.
WCR, a family affair and the vision of Ron and Evonne Parker and their sons, Nick, David
and Nathan, sports a new lodge and an atmosphere that is truly family-oriented.
“We want the experience to be first-class but yet not stuffy,” said owner Ron Parker.
Located in Red River County near Detroit, the property consists of 1,200-plus acres of wellmanaged
land that will take hunters back in time.
The habitat, birds and dogs are first-rate, with fields cleared out of the thick woods by Parker,
who also owns a construction business.
“And we have cleared saplings in two areas to offer hunters a true Georgia-style quail hunt
with tough shots through the trees,” Ron said. “Our customers love it.”
Wingshooters may want to get their hunts booked, though, as the word is getting out about
Wildcat Creek, where 10 weekends are already fully booked for the upcoming season.
Several flight pens allow for flight training for the pen-raised birds, and the birds are released
before the beginning of the season.
“We want the birds to be as wild as possible and
explode out of the grass,” Ron said.
After the hunt, the new lodge and the food
served at WCR may be even more memorable.
The food is prepared by son David, a trained chef
who has worked at top restaurants.
WCR has added a 5-stand sporting clay station
for parties and corporate events.
Room for six in all-new
Viking VI side-by-side
Yamaha’s new Viking VI EPS is an extended cab six-person SxS combining
the industry’s leading performance and durability with comfort and
convenience – now with maximum headroom, legroom and shoulder room
for six occupants.
The new Viking VI is made for tough off-road duty boasting Yamaha’s industryleading
Ultramatic fully automatic transmission, On-Command four-wheel drive
system, Electric Power Steering and Yamaha’s proven and powerful 700cc-class
engine. With 600-pounds hauling and 1,500 pounds towing, Viking VI is made to
be the toughest, hardest working and most off-road capable six-person SxS ever.
Lone Star Outdoor News’ CEO David J. Sams test-drove the Viking VI and found
ample room for his legs in the middle back seat. The EPS allowed for driving at
slow speeds with a finger.
“This might be as close to a crew cab pickup truck as you can get in a side-byside
vehicle,” Sams said. “The engine has more power than you might ever need
and in the soft stuff, the locking differential is a great asset, as well as the full
underbody skid plate.”
Every Yamaha Viking and Viking VI is being assembled in the U.S.A. at Yamaha’s
factory in Newnan,
Georgia,
for worldwide
distribution.
Greystone
Castle: Not
just for
wingshooters
Visit DSC member/donor Richard Hume at
BOOTH #3941
Since 1995, travelers on I-20 have been wondering what it is they see as they
approach the Thurber exit about 70 miles west of Fort Worth. They’ve noticed
the big English-style castle that looms atop one of the majestic mesas... but
have still questioned what it is. However, for avid wingshooters and sportsmen
across Texas and the rest of the country — they know it’s Greystone Castle Sporting
Club.
For more than a decade, Greystone Castle has been part of the Orvis family as one
of their premier wingshooting destinations. In fact, their name has become synonymous
with quality in the hunting industry. Although wingshooting has certainly been
Greystone’s forte for many years now, one aspect of their management expertise that has
sometimes been overlooked is their success in producing trophy white-tailed deer. Last
year, their hunters harvested over 25 trophy whitetails, including five in the top 20 of
the SCI Record Book. This success has continued this season with their hunters taking
numerous deer over 170 inches including several well over 200 inches.
And that’s what is so unique and compelling about Greystone Castle. It can be so
many things to so many different sportsmen. To the upland gunner, large fields of sorghum,
millet, and switch grass bring memories of great gun dogs, flushing pheasants,
bobwhite covey rises, and days in the field with friends. For the big game hunter, it’s
more than 6,000 acres that offer some of the best whitetail hunting in the country and
over 30 species of exotic game. For the clay shooter, it’s the great sporting clays and
pyramid 5-stand courses that will test the best of shooters. And for the avid angler, their
trophy bass lakes present year-round opportunities for tight lines on largemouth bass and
hybrid stripers.
What appeals to all visitors at Greystone are its top-of-the-line accommodations and
gourmet meals. There are five elegantly decorated suites capable of hosting more than
25 guests, a dining room complete with a full-time executive chef, spacious conference
facilities, a swimming pool with hot tub, and, just outside the castle walls, a scenic lookout
affords a breathtaking vista of the entire estate. In addition, the newly constructed
2,600-square-foot pavilion facility features a custom bar, large seating areas, 65-inch
TV, carved limestone fireplace, Laser Shot, billiards and an overlook terrace with a custom
outdoor fire pit.
The ownership and staff have been dedicated to creating one of the finest sporting
destinations found anywhere in the world. Long-term habitat improvement and wildlife
management has made Greystone an extraordinary hunting destination. This, coupled
with the unique castle facility and outstanding customer service, makes Greystone Castle
a place without equal.
Hunters find whole
gear system with
CaptivateM Outdoors
When husband-and-wife team Martha and Mike Monnin formed CaptivateM Outdoors,
their desire was to help outdoorsmen and women get the gear they need
to improve their outdoor experience, especially when chasing winter whitetails
or pursuing mountain sheep, elk or caribou.
The company’s mission is to provide every hunter a gear system that is tailor-made to their
individual hunting style, taking into account the terrain, favored hunting methods, climate
and body type.
Although CaptivateM Outdoors is internet-based, it is not an online retailer.
“We have a personal consultation with each customer — usually by phone but sometimes
by email — we don’t take orders online for gear,” Mike Monnin said. “You need a whole
system to hunt properly, especially hunting the Texas winters and when you head to the
mountains.”
Monnin said customers planning a trip may purchase things they don’t need and need
things they haven’t considered.
“A lot of people don’t need what they want or don’t know what they need,” he said. “We
want the customer to understand exactly what they are looking at and understand what they
need for their particular type of hunting.”
At CaptivateM Outdoors, the Monnins have compiled the finest lines of clothing and gear
from manufacturers like Sitka Mountain Gear outerwear, FirstLite Merino wool and MontBell
insulating layers, sleeping bags and technical gear. For the feet, they offer a pair of Kenetrek
boots and socks for every hunting scenario. For the mountain adventure, they will help direct
you to the right model of Hilleberg tents and Swarovski Optiks.
Customer service is the key to CaptivateM Outdoors’ success.
“We want to get the right gear
to the right people for the right
purpose,” Monnin said of the
company, a Dallas Safari Club
life member. “We have a huge
clientele in Texas — while we
have fewer customers than the big
retailers, we have a lot more loyal
customers.”
Kendall to present
Distinguished Lectureship
in Quail Management at
DSC Convention
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the Distinguished Lectureship in
Quail Management at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, in conjunction with the Dallas Safari
Club’s annual convention.
The seminar, featuring the topic “On the Trail of the Eyeworm in Texas Bobwhites,” will
be in Seminar Hall C4 of the Dallas Convention Center.
“Eyeworms have been identified as a contender for the ‘smoking gun’ involved with the
long decline of wild quail numbers across the state,” said Dr. Dale Rollins, AgriLife Extension’s
statewide coordinator for the Reversing the Quail Decline Initiative at San Angelo.
“Dr. Ronald Kendall, professor of toxicology at Texas Tech University’s Texas Institute of
Environmental and Human Health at Lubbock, will be our keynote speaker.”
Kendall is involved with the Operation Idiopathic Decline research effort funded by the
Rolling Plains Quail Research Foundation.
“Kendall and his students have several studies underway with the goal of controlling
eyeworms and cecal worms in wild quail, Rollins said. “This year’s lecture melds well with
last January’s lecture by Dr. Peter Hudson, who identified and successfully treated cecal
worms which were incriminated in the decline of red grouse in the United Kingdom.”
Ranger ETX delivers
When Lone Star Outdoor News
Foundation needed a UTV for
chores and transporting hunters,
feed and hopefully bringing deer
back to the camp, it knew where to go.
The call was made to Hoffpauir Polaris
in Goldwaithe, and a week later, the Polaris
Ranger ETX was on the trailer headed to
South Texas.
At a cost of just over $8,600, it isn’t full of
thrills — it simply gets the job done. Transporting
two people easily and three without
a lot of trouble, it takes care of trips to the
blind. Moving feed and deer is a breeze in the
bed with a payload capacity of 1,000 pounds.
“My larger frame fits well in this new midsized
UTV with a very comfortable cab,” said
Lone Star Outdoor News founder David J. Sams. “The 30 HP EFI motor has plenty of power
and if you need speed, I ran it up to 45 mph. It has good control at high and low speeds and
the turning radius is acceptable.”
The suspension in the ETX makes moving around the ranch much less bumpy than in your
truck.
“You can cruise about twice as fast,” Sams said. “And we have been getting about two to
three times the gas mileage as in our trucks.”
The new, electric fuel injection technology should remove the ethanol-containing fuel issues
that occur in carbureted engines — but it will take many more hours to know for sure. During
the break-in period, the bushing seals were a bit squeaky.
“That seems to have settled in with the some lubrication from the South Texas dust,” Sams
said.
The 4-stroke, single cylinder, liquid-cooled engine is fueled by a 9-gallon fuel tank, and the
on-demand, 4WD option helps in wet conditions, or, for our uses, dry conditions where the
sandy soil slows non-4WD pickups to a crawl — or a complete stop. The tilt cargo bed is favorite
feature, especially after you return to camp.
“Washing out the blood is easy — the ETX has transported many animals back to headquarters
already,” Sams said.
The biggest problem is when more than one pair of hunters is at the ranch at the same time.
“Everyone wants to take it out hunting,” Sams said.
The all-new
LaRue MBT-2S
Trigger
{
In a world of instantly M.I.M. (metal injection molding) cast/stamped rifle and
pistol components, LaRue Tactical threw on the brakes, slowed to a walk, and built
2-stage triggers out of solid S7 tool steel plates. The MBT-2S triggers are meticulously
built in-house in Texas by LaRue’s staff toolmakers, without a stopwatch in
sight.
Without question, LaRue is particular about accuracy. Gun enthusiasts know that one
of the smartest improvements an AR-owner can do to their rifle is a precision trigger
upgrade. And everyone also knows that LaRue Tactical has a track record of doing things
right.
The LaRue MBT-2S was purposefully designed and manufactured to render the greatest
benefits from our legendary line of accurate rifles. The MBT-2S can also replace the
stock trigger on any mil-spec AR lower receiver.
Sparing no expense, all major components are precision-machined from S7 Tool Steel.
The result of this extra effort is a glass-smooth, hyper-consistent trigger that will satisfy
even the most scrupulous competition shooter, but also be overly rugged for the hunt or
the battlefield.
The MBT-2S breaks crisply at 4.5 lbs (2.5-lb. first stage, 2-lb. second stage) and has
a smooth and positive reset.
LaRue Tactical
was formed in
1980 by owner
Mark LaRue of
Leander. LaRue
Tactical is known
worldwide for its
hyper-accurate
all available at
LaRue’s motto
the story. “The
“Our strong point is our guarantee — ‘If you ain’t happy, then we ain’t happy,’ LaRue
Let your moment live
to tell the story
Fine taxidermy from a family
business
B
& B Taxidermy has been in business since 1983 in Houston, Texas and provides taxidermy for North
American and African Mounts. We offer many options for mounting your trophies, no matter if it’s African
to North American, Global or Exotic. Another aspect we have been involved with is designing and decorating
trophy rooms in homes and businesses. Custom-designed dioramas for your trophy mounts can be
accomplished above and beyond your expectations.
We invite you to stop by our showroom at 11030 Jones Road West in Houston. We will be glad to show all the
mounting options to meet your needs. B&B Taxidermy is always looking for new ways to mount your trophies and
preserve that lifetime of memories.
Mike started hunting when he was 5 years old. He loved animals and everything about them. He took his first
class of taxidermy with Kent Betts in 1979, in Ag Resource at Cy Creek High School. And that did it — he was
hooked.
Mike continued hanging around a local taxidermist shop and helping with anything that they would let him do. He
just seemed to be a natural for taxidermy. He studied the animals in the wild and knew what they should look like
when mounted. In 1983, Mike started his own taxidermy business along with his good friend Leonard Bayer (the
other B). Leonard was an avid hunter and had gone to Africa at least once a year.
B & B has grown since its humble beginnings and now has grown into a thriving business that has a father-son
component. In 2011, Mike’s son, Frank Baird Jr., joined
B&B full-time after working at the shop since he was a
preteen.
Mike now takes his clients and family overseas, hunts
yearly, as well as doing lots of local deer and bird hunting.
Mike still has that love for the animals, which shows in
every mount that goes out the doors of B & B Taxidermy.
Trophy Rooms by B&B Taxidermy can offer an exceptional
look to your home or business. Mike Baird and staff
excel at creating visually stunning taxidermy trophy rooms
in the space you have available.
Interested in
buying or selling
a ranch
{Think Ranch Investments
{
Since its beginning in 1982, Ranch Investments has emerged as one of the
leading ranch brokerage firms in the state of Texas. Historic sales of 1.4 million
acres totalling nearly $1 billion has established our prominent place in the
market. Initially based in Austin, the primary marketing efforts were focused in
the six counties surrounding Austin and the South Texas Brush Country. However, during
the past 10 years, brokers and agent representatives have been added in 12 locations
allowing us to better serve the entire state of Texas.
The founder, Kenneth O’Meara, developed a concept that brought together a team of
associates with varied backgrounds in farming, ranching and land ownership. Our associates
have extensive knowledge in wildlife management and commercial hunting, oil
and gas production, row crop and irrigated farming, equine centers, cow, calf and feeder
operations as well as real estate development. This enables us to best serve buyers and
sellers with their transactions in the most efficient and professional manner.
In 2008, John Ed Stepan took over the helm at Ranch Investments and manages the
daily operations of the firm. Along with his expert staff, he coordinates print media and
Internet marketing, works alongside his team of associates to assist them in any way
and works directly with clients. As a Life Member of the Dallas Safari Club, John Ed has
supported numerous wildlife conservation efforts over the years. His background is varied
and unique including International Hunting Consultant, Game Ranch Development,
Commercial Hunting Operations, Rural Land Development, Commercial Real Estate and
Mineral Production. These diversified talents brought a new dimension to Ranch Investments.
Adhering to its roots, Ranch Investments is actively engaged in the marketing and acquisition
of working farms and ranches. However, since 2008 a new set of benefits have
become available to our customers.
With our network of accountants, attorneys, qualified intermediaries (for 1031 Exchanges)
and real estate brokers we have the team of professionals to assist you in the
sale of your property and the reinvestment of the proceeds. Many times we encounter
sellers who own property of significant value that has been in the family many years.
This generally results in a low cost basis and the tax implications can be significant.
We work with each client to develop a strategy such as utilizing the 1031 Exchange to
reinvest the proceeds tax deferred into income-producing properties.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is the first-time landowner, whether someone
seeking a weekend getaway or a working land investment. We carefully listen to our
clients’ objectives, develop a plan and locate the ideal property.
Moving forward after the purchase, we offer a full range of consulting services in ranch
development for maximum enjoyment and utilization. Our expert team will assist you in
taking an undeveloped piece of property and building lakes, roads, game fences, barns,
houses, lodges and runways. Furthermore, utilizing our network of wildlife biologists, we
will develop a plan for the propagation of native and exotic game, migratory and upland
game birds.
For more than 32 years, Ranch Investments has been trusted by families, foundations,
corporations and trusts to represent them in their rural real estate transactions. Our
reputation is based on honesty and integrity, so you may rest assured that Ranch Investments
will always be by your side. When contemplating your next rural land transaction,
think Ranch Investments. It is an honor to serve our clients, so please contact us for the
service you deserve.
When you fight the
battle for your life, CCW
Safe will fight the battle
for your future
Concealed Carry Permit holders are ready to use force in self-defense to protect
themselves and their families. They may not be ready, though, for what follows in
the form of administrative, criminal or civil actions.
Two of the founders of CCW Safe experienced just that, suits filed in federal
courts over the proper self-defense use of force.
Founded in 2011, CCW Safe was formed by former law enforcement officers and attorneys
to cover the administrative, criminal and civil actions stemming from a self-defense use of
force, and to do so with no out-of-pocket expenses from its members and no caps or limits on
services provided.
CCW Safe is a legal service membership plan (not an insurance product) that was designed
for CCW permit/license holders and law enforcement officers. The member pays a flat yearly
fee and enters into a legal agreement with the company to take care of most of the expenses
(attorneys fees, investigators and expert witness cost) associated with the cost following a critical
self-defense incident.
If you are involved in a self-defense use of force incident where you have to defend the life
of yourself or another, CCW Safe will select and pay for attorneys, expert witnesses and investigators.
This will cover the
criminal proceedings, the
civil proceedings and administrative
action taken
by the state against your
permit/license ONLY following
the use of force.
The tradition continues
{James D. Julia March 2015 Firearms Auction to feature the iconic Elmer Keith Estate Collection
To most firearms aficionados, Elmer Keith needs no
introduction.
World War II, he served as a small arms inspector at the Ogden, Utah, Arsenal and subsequently
devoted his full efforts towards writing in the beginning in the ’50s. During his career, he served
on the staff of The Outdoorsman, The American Rifleman, Western Sportsman, Guns and Guns
and Ammo. Elmer also wrote 10 books, ending with his autobiography, “Hell, I was there!” in
1979.
Keith espoused form and function in his works. An avid big-game hunter stemming from his
roots as a Rocky Mountain guide, Elmer was equally proficient with a big-bore revolver, bolt auction,
single-shot or double rifle. His collection being offered at Julia’s includes treasures from
Keith’s battery of African stopping rifles, highlighted by the legendary “Corbett Tiger Rifle”; the
famous Jeffery .450/400, once the principal weapon of famed Tiger hunter Edward James “Jim”
Corbett. Also a selection of English Best Quality stopping rifles by Westley Richards and Holland
& Holland, Classic Farquarsons and magazine rifles by Hoffman Arms and C-H, along with a
host of specialized hunting and target handguns by Smith & Wesson, Ruger and Colt. The prize,
though, is Elmer’s much publicized tricked-out and engraved Colt “SAA No.5” in .44 Spl, which
Keith called “The Last Word in Fine Sixguns.” This collection represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
to own a piece of history.
Over the course of the last several years, the auction firm of James D. Julia has regularly conducted the highest grossing firearms
sales events in history. This accomplishment has been realized not by selling the most firearms at any given time, but rather by
offering the most exclusive, important and expensive firearms in the world, twice each year. Julia’s is now widely regarded as the
world leader in the sale of investment grade goods and is the preferred resource for buyers and sellers alike. In recent years, the
roll call of Private, Estate and Institutional collections being offered reads like a Who’s Who from the firearms universe. These sales are
anticipated and followed by an international audience of collectors, dealers, and enthusiasts.
James D. Julia’s March 15-17, 2015 firearms auction is shaping up to be an event for the ages, and will be the focus of those passionate
about firearms and firearms history. A highly anticipated grouping of firearms and accessories from the iconic Elmer Keith Estate
Collection will be a featured component of the sale. Many of these items have been on display at the Elmer Keith Museum housed inside
Cabela’s Boise, Idaho retail showroom. All items in the collection have remained in the possession of the Keith family since Elmer’s passing
in 1984.
To most firearms aficionados, Elmer Keith needs no introduction. Keith’s trademarks were his cigars, his 10-gallon Stetson, his outspoken
opinions and practical expertise. Elmer became arguably the most famous and prolific gun writer in America over the span of his
60-year career. Even today, his articles and books are widely reprinted with the content being as applicable and fresh as the day they were
written. During the 1920s and 1930s, Elmer was a rancher and big game guide in Oregon and Idaho with his first articles starting to appear
during this time. His first published work
was in the American Rifleman in 1924. During
Shoot fast on Hidden
Lakes quail hunt
The big rangy English pointer named
Rowdy was making one of his typical sweeps
50 yards ahead of the line of hunters when
he locked on to the siren scent of a covey of
bobwhite quail and immediately jerked to a
stop.
Every muscle in his body taut, Rowdy
waited for the other two English pointers,
Molly and Freckles, to circle and also come
to point on the waist-high Johnson grass and
milo next to the mowed strip.
As four hunters — LSON’s Craig Nyhus,
Conor Harrison, Mike Hughs and Steve
Schwartz, along with guide Dennis Hyde, approached the dogs, Rowdy broke his point, circled
to the backside of the covey and slowly moved in again.
“These birds will run on a windy day and he always circles the covey when the other dogs
move in,” Hyde said. “He knows they try and run, so he boxes them in.”
Slowly advancing on the trio of dogs, hunters and guide positioned themselves in a line
before Hyde released his flushing lab, Jade, to run into the middle of the brush and make the
covey rise.
Birds exploded out of the brush, two going left with the wind and another going right and
into the stiff breeze.
Shotguns sang and two birds hit the ground, soon to be picked up by Jade.
“I think I shot that one,” Hughs said.
“Nope, I think that was mine,” Schwartz said with a laugh.
The competitive banter lasted the entire hunt.
The scenario was repeated throughout the afternoon when the crew from Lone Star Outdoor
News made the 90-minute drive from Dallas to Yantis near Lake Fork and the Hidden Lakes
Hunting Lodge.
After arriving at the lodge, a 10,400-square-foot building with eight guest rooms, we were
served a country lunch of country-fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans and rolls before
meeting Hyde and heading out to one of the four main hunting fields on the property to chase
birds.
Hidden Lakes raises their own birds, with six flight pens and more than 14,000 bobwhite
quail and pheasants on the premises.
After a post-hunt beverage, Hyde delivered our cleaned birds and we headed back to Dallas
— cold, tired and happy.
This hunt was purchased by Lone Star Outdoor News at the DSC Crawfish Boil, and was a
100-percent donation by Hidden Lakes Hunting Lodge to DSC.
Unique western art bronze sculptures
from Joshua Tobey
{
“Nature, in all its wonderful and diverse forms, is my inspiration. My
artwork is not a replica, it is an impression of nature’s perfection.”
A
second-generation sculptor, Joshua Tobey lives in Loveland,
Colorado where artistic and outdoor inspiration surrounds him.
His work has become increasingly prevalent throughout the
country and internationally. At 37 years old, he is firmly established
in the Western art world, creating bronze sculptures of wildlife
featuring a contemporary patina. Renowned for this patina work, Josh
combines his love of art and his lifelong passion for the outdoors in his
bronze sculpture. Sometimes called whimsical, Josh’s work also has a
serious side; it depicts the “interdependence of wildlife and humanity”
by revealing aspects of human emotion, experience and culture through
wildlife sculpture.
His work ranges in size from miniature to monumental. Josh’s work has
been featured in several national magazines, including the cover artist
for Wildlife Art. Tobey shows his work annually at the National Cowboy
& Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, The Gilcrease
Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, The Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming,
the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, as
well as five major national galleries. Recently, he was the featured artist
at the 2014 Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival.
Other honors include assisting his father, Gene Tobey, on more than
12 monuments, one of them for Baylor University — a 16-foot bronze
bear titled “The Hand of Man,” three major works in the collection of
Raymond James Financial art collection in St. Petersburg, Florida and
public works in the collections of Na ‘Aina Kai Botanical Gardens and
Sculpture Park in Kauai, Hawaii.
Tobey also sculpted three monuments at his alma mater, Western State
University in Gunnison, Colorado, and monuments at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Colorado and Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Phoenix, Arizona.
Tobey became an elected member of the National Sculpture Society in 2012 and currently serves as a board member of the Artist Charitable Fund, a nonprofit organization.
{
Investing, collecting
or hunting, Rock
Island has your next
firearm
There are a lot of guns out there, and they come in a seemingly endless
list of manufacturers, genres, eras and uses. While concealed carry arms and
modern semi-automatic rifles seem to be the hot topic of the day, tens of thousands
of firearm owners have interests in other areas: military arms both foreign
and domestic, guns from America’s Old West, antiques, firearms that shaped history and
those used by master craftsmen as a canvas of wood and steel.
The reasons for owning, using, and loving them generally boils down to these three
variables — practical use, collecting and investment. Practical use covers everyone from
target shooters and concealed carriers to those dreaming of their next big hunting trip.
Collectors and investors, while generally less focused on practical use, are just as passionate
and can be even more demanding of the firearms they seek. They add to their ranks
every day.
Over the last 15 years, antique and collectible firearms have demonstrated that they not
only retain their value, but outperform traditional portfolio holdings such as bonds, stocks,
CDs and treasury bills. Similar to other collectibles such as classic cars, coins and sports
memorabilia, collector and investment grade firearms possess an intrinsic value based on
their limited supply. Add a renewed interest in antique and collectible firearms as many
historical, rare and high-condition guns are disappearing into private collections or the
{
vaults of museums across the country.
Since you are attending the Dallas Safari Club Convention, your interests are
in a special position to blend those three key reasons for collecting. Big game
hunters often prefer high quality, large-caliber hunting rifles in their pursuits.
After all, miles from civilization is no place to be lugging around excess weight
or worse, to suffer a malfunction when the perfect shot or danger arises. Those
who manufacture these guns find a great deal of pride in the craftsmanship and
responsibility their work entails. Arms that possess this high quality tend to hold
or even increase in value over time, immediately lending themselves to both
practical use and investment.
It doesn’t take much imagination to envision a scenario where someone,
enamored with their own hunting piece, then decides to purchase another —
maybe in a caliber made special to them by their father, or perhaps one of historical
interest like the .405 “Teddy Roosevelt” caliber — and with that decision
high-end sporting arms easily find themselves in the third reason for ownership:
collecting.
Whether you own your rifles, shotguns, or even handguns for one or all of these three
reasons, Rock Island Auction Company would be proud to assist you in finding your next
firearm. Whether it’s your everyday carry pistol, the rifle you use to knock down sheep on
the next ridge or the fowling piece you bring to walk for pheasants, we will have it. If you
are looking for any of the world’s top manufacturers such as Purdey, Holland & Holland,
John Dickson, Blaser, Krieghoff, Browning or others, we will have it. If you are rounding
out your collection, looking for an unusual caliber, or seeking a rare variation, we will have
it. Best of all, if you are seeking to make a tangible investment in something other than
paper in a bank or numbers on a computer screen, we will have that too. And if for some
reason, we do not have what you are looking for in our next auction, we will look for it and
personally notify you when we do. We sell 20,000-25,000 firearms each year.
Give us a call and allow us the privilege of finding your next shooter, investment or piece
of your collection.
Rock Island Auction Company is the world’s #1 auction company for firearms, bladed
weapons, and militaria. Founded in 1993 by its current Owner and President Patrick Hogan,
RIAC continues to set records for sales and to lead the industry with its extensive and
beautiful marketing efforts.
Their 86,000 facility hosts
eight auctions each year. They
The future of long-range:
Monarch 7 Riflescope with
Custom XR Turrets
Long-range shooters need a clear and crisp sight picture, an enhanced field of view and
instant and repeatable control over the trajectory of every shot. The Nikon MONARCH 7
meets these shooters’ needs, and more.
MONARCH 7 riflescopes feature one-piece 30mm main body tubes and a glass-etched
BDC reticle, plus the Custom XR Turret package — so you have the option to either dial-in
your distance on the crosshair, or to utilize the holdover points on the BDC reticle.
Custom Engraved Turret to Match Your Load
The Custom XR Turret package allows you to custom match the distances inscribed on
the elevation dial to the specific ballistics of your load and environmental conditions. As
a result, you can dial-in your exact shooting range and hold your crosshair directly on your
target for every shot. A redemption voucher for your custom package comes with each
riflescope.
BDC Reticle
The various aiming points built into the BDC reticle can be utilized with Nikon’s Spot On
Ballistic Match Technology to give you exact aiming points at various yardages. Take the
guesswork out of figuring elevation and bullet-drop compensation.
Rugged, One-Piece 30mm Main Body Tube
Engineered for minimum weight and maximum strength and durability, Nikon builds
these scopes from aircraft grade aluminum alloy and utilizes larger internal lenses for
maximum resolution. Larger tubes allow for the best resolution, wider windage and elevation
travel and superior low-light performance.
Spot On Ballistic Match Technology
Like all of Nikon’s riflescopes, the MONARCH 7 series is optimized for use with Nikon
Spot On Ballistic Match Technology. Spot On allows you to discover all of the exact aiming
points on your scope’s reticle at various yardages for your specific ammunition and load.
Lifetime Warranty
Nikon riflescopes are covered by a Limited Lifetime Warranty. If any Nikon riflescope is
found to have defects in workmanship or materials, we will, at our option, repair or replace
it at no charge.
The MONARCH 7 series includes a quick focus eyepiece to all the shooter to instantly
bring the reticle into sharp focus, and all are waterproof, fogproof and shockproof.
{ Precious metals the Texas way
There is a lot more to Shiner, Texas, than just making beer. Texas Precious Metals, headquartered in Shiner, was founded in 2010 as a precious
metals wholesaler and quickly expanded into the retail market, doing $175 million in business in 2014. The company is recognized by the United
States Mint as a national bullion dealer and a market maker for the U.S. Mint, Canadian Mint, and the Perth Mint of Australia, and was recently
awarded the distinction of being the #1 Fastest Growing Aggie-owned Company in the world by Texas A&M University.
For Texas Precious Metals (texmetals.com), the company mission is service and “Doing Business the Texas Way.” The company only sells products it has in
stock and guarantees shipment no later than three business days from receipt of payment via UPS overnight delivery. This service commitment is unparalleled
in the industry.
“We understand that people investing in precious metals may be sending us their life savings, so we designed our supply chain for speed and customer
reassurance,” said Tarek Saab, chief operating officer and cofounder of Texas Precious Metals LLC, and a finalist on the fifth season of the NBC reality show
The Apprentice. “Today, the industry’s average delivery time, from when the customer wires the funds to delivery
of the package, is normally six to 12 weeks, which is incredibly frustrating to the customer. It holds the
customer’s funds at risk and makes the buyer very vulnerable.”
Texas Precious Metals has changed that model of business, said CEO Jason Kaspar.
“From receipt of the customer’s funds via bank wire to delivery of these high-value goods,
the process takes no more than three days,” he said. “This is one of the reasons we migrated
from using ground shipping to using UPS Next Day Air. Using an effective, quick and secure
method of delivery is a priority.”
By using advanced tracking technology, customers are comforted in knowing that their
highly anticipated and valuable shipments are safely on their way.
“We are a service-based business; we do not have salespeople,” Saab explained. “We
never want our customers to feel they were coerced into their buying decisions.”
Among other innovations, the company introduced the .9999 fine “Texas Silver
Round” in 2013, and has since sold more than 1.1 million of these rounds into circulation.
The 2015 design features an iconic white-tailed deer, designed by acclaimed
artist Heidi Wastweet. Last year, the Perth Mint of Australia partnered with Texas
Precious Metals to produce a half-ounce energy-themed silver coin, a design that was
approved by Australia’s parliament.
The future is bright for the bullion company.
“Working in a field you love is something everyone hopes they can do. But being
able to transform an industry is the fulfillment of a dream,” Saab said. “In the four
short years Texas Precious Metals has been in existence, we’ve changed how customers
buy precious metals. We’re seeing the impact in our client relationships and our explosive
growth.”
