EXHAUST WATER SEPARATION
Halyard developed the concept of exhaust water
separation, and now designs and produces
systems for engines ranging from small generators
to mighty power providers on superyachts and
commercial craft. Fitting a water separator into the
exhaust replaces the gooseneck, and removes the
water once it has done its cooling job, draining this
quietly away below the hull. Back pressure is
reduced dramatically, and the system stops the
sploshing noise which accompanies every marine
engine running in harbour - or on a generator
sploshing away in a quiet haven somewhere, to the
fury of nearby boats.

NOISE RESULTS
The exhaust from most generators,
using Halyard’s lift silencer allied to
Halyard’s water separator, is effectively
inaudible in all but the quietest
environments. Not only this, but water
separation dramatically reduces engine
back pressure. This allows huge design
flexibility for propulsion engines as well as
generators – particularly on larger yachts
with long and tortuous exhaust hose
runs from the engine to the stern.
Test using 50hp marine diesel
The new Millennium Separator range uses
the knowledge acquired during 15 years of
development work by Halyard. Each
model was carefully and extensively tested
before the sophisticated production
tooling was commissioned, allowing bulk
production to reduce the cost.
The new Millennium Separator range
achieves seven vital objectives:
• The unit is reversible – it can be
positioned pointing right or left.
• Most have a choice of horizontal or
vertical outlet.
• Outlet is at maximum height,
facilitating safe exhaust design.
• No joints or seals – the one-piece unit
removes the risk of leaks.
• High melt point. Although the
separator is fitted behind the silencer,
the high temperature material
minimises the risk of melting in an
exhaust overheat situation.
• Effective separation. Water separation
is almost 100%, apart from
condensation in the dry hose run
behind the separator.
• World-beating value for money.
Halyard’s water separator range is used
by boat builders and generator
manufacturers throughout the world, on
generators up to 500kw. The Millennium
Separator range is designed for
production boats with generators up to
approximately 40kw.

SYSTEM DESIGN
Good exhaust design depends on the
engine position relative to the waterline.
A typical generator exhaust leaves the
engine and drops to a lift silencer, then
rises to the water separator mounted well
above waterline. This forms a high point,
or gooseneck, in the system. The drop
from the engine, and the high point,
protect the engine from seawater coming
in through the outlet when the engine is
stationary. The layout is vital to protect
the engine from sea-water. The Fitting
Instructions give more information and
our staff are happy to advise given
detailed installation sketches.
