PREMIER’S SPELLING BEE: THE STATE’S BEST SPELLER
Wednesday 24 November, 2010
Premier Kristina Keneally and Minister for Education and Training, Verity Firth today joined
the 76 State finalists who are competing to be crowned Premier’s Spelling Bee State
champion.
Over the last four months, more than 88,000 students across NSW have participated in the
Premier’s Spelling Bee rounds – making it the biggest spelling bee in Australia.
The Premier’s Spelling Bee is open to students in NSW government primary, central and
community schools and has two divisions - Junior for students in Years 3 and 4, and Senior
for students in Years 5 and 6.
The Premier’s Spelling Bee State Final is being held at the ABC Centre, Sydney today.
The final half-hour of the competition will be broadcast live on ABC Local Radio from
5.30pm.
Finalists will be asked to spell words from five categories: General, Arts, Australiana,
Environment and Sport.
“The Premier’s Spelling Bee is a fun and educational way for primary school students across
the State to improve their spelling and expand their vocabulary,” Ms Keneally said.
“Getting to the final is an amazing achievement, especially when you consider the record
number of students who signed up for this year’s competition.”
The Spelling Bee was first launched in 2004 with 800 students taking part, and just six years
later, a record 88,658 students have signed up in 2010.
Minister for Education and Training, Verity Firth, said the Spelling Bee was about ensuring
all NSW students have access to opportunities that will help them develop and improve their
literacy.
“NSW is home to the best student spellers in the country. NSW students topped the nation
in spelling at every year level tested as part of the national literacy and numeracy
examinations – NAPLAN,” Ms Firth said.
The Premier’s Spelling Bee is proudly supported by Principal Sponsor Westpac; Media
Partners ABC Local Radio and The Sun-Herald; and Supporting Sponsors Franklin
Electronics and word list supplier Macquarie Dictionary.
