30 September 2010$50,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS FOR COUNTRY APPRENTICESThe M<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>for</strong> Education and Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, Verity Firth, today announced$50,000 <strong>in</strong> Ben Chifley Scholarships <strong>for</strong> ten <strong>apprentices</strong> from <strong>country</strong> <strong>NSW</strong>.Ms Firth said the <strong>scholarships</strong> each valued at $5000 per year will help the ten<strong>apprentices</strong> with their tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g expenses.“This is about support<strong>in</strong>g <strong>apprentices</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>country</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> who are struggl<strong>in</strong>g tomake ends meet.“The extra support assists <strong>apprentices</strong> who have shown aptitude <strong>in</strong> vocationaleducation and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to achieve their potential by successfully complet<strong>in</strong>gtheir trade tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.“The <strong>scholarships</strong> are a tribute to <strong>for</strong>mer Prime M<strong>in</strong>ister, Ben Chifley, who wasa technical student <strong>in</strong> Bathurst.“Study<strong>in</strong>g four nights a week while work<strong>in</strong>g as a fireman, Mr Chifley went onto become the youngest first-class locomotive eng<strong>in</strong>e driver <strong>in</strong> the State.“Ben Chifley would have been extremely proud <strong>of</strong> these young people from<strong>country</strong> <strong>NSW</strong>, who’ve overcome major obstacles to excel <strong>in</strong> their chosentrade.“This is part <strong>of</strong> <strong>NSW</strong> Government’s commitment to address<strong>in</strong>g skills shortages<strong>in</strong> areas like construction, commercial cookery and mechanics.“Over the past ten years, there has been unparallelled growth <strong>in</strong><strong>apprentices</strong>hips and tra<strong>in</strong>eeships.“In fact, there are more than 161,000 <strong>apprentices</strong> and tra<strong>in</strong>ees currentlyemployed <strong>in</strong> <strong>NSW</strong>, and some 55,000 <strong>of</strong> those <strong>apprentices</strong>hips are <strong>in</strong>traditional trades.“This is encourag<strong>in</strong>g news <strong>for</strong> employers and <strong>in</strong>dustry groups across the Statewho rely on a highly skilled work<strong>for</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> tradespeople.”The ten <strong>scholarships</strong> are <strong>in</strong> addition to the 20 ongo<strong>in</strong>g <strong>scholarships</strong> <strong>for</strong> secondand third year <strong>apprentices</strong> awarded last year.
