In this Easter
season, we proclaim
with joy that Jesus
is the Way, the
Truth and the Life,
and we pray that
this good news will
touch us and
change our lives.
From the Principal
Fr Paul Cahill, O.Carm.
Next Friday, 27 May, the College will be host to some very distinguished guests. This has arisen as a result of an
initiative of Ms Nicole Ross, Head of Soreth House and Mr James Box, Middle School Coordinator. As they did so well
last year, they undertook, again this year, to arrange the special events and activities for the celebration of the College’s
Feast Day, Mt Carmel Day. The College will observe this Feast of Our lady of Mount Carmel on Wednesday 20 July this
year, the first Wednesday of Term 3. Mass for all students and staff will form an integral part of the day. Years 7 – 9
students will have some special activities and then, after lunch, everyone will be involved in a Walk for East Timor, for
which students are asked to gain sponsorship to support the Carmelites’ mission in East Timor. Ms Ross and Mr Box
have arranged a special guest to speak to the whole school in the lead-up to Mt Carmel Day as a way of getting the
students thinking about the needs of the people of East Timor and organising their sponsorship for the Walk so that
we can really make a great contribution to the work of the Carmelites on the mission in East Timor. This special guest
is General Peter Cosgrove. He and his wife will visit Whitefriars next Friday morning and the General will address a
specially convened whole College Assembly.
General Peter Cosgrove is currently Chancellor of Australian Catholic University . Previously, he served in the Australian
Army from 1965 and was Chief of the Australian Defence Force from July 2002 until his retirement in July 2005.
He first leapt into the public consciousness when he headed the 9000-strong multinational peace-keeping INTERFET
force in East Timor in 1999 - 2000, following the tragic and bloody upheaval that accompanied East Timor’s struggle for
independence from Indonesia. For his guidance, skill and sensitivity, he was appointed a Companion of the Military
Division of the Order of Australia.
General Cosgrove was also awarded the Military Cross for his service in Vietnam, and in 2001, was named Australian of
the Year. Last year he was awarded an honorary doctorate by ACU.
We are extraordinarily privileged to have General Cosgrove come to Whitefriars and speak to us about his experiences,
particularly in East Timor – and help us understand something more of the people and their plight, whom we are
trying to assist through our support of the Carmelite mission.
Unfortunately, I am unable to be personally present for General Cosgrove’s visit as I have a long-standing commitment
to attend an event in Indonesia in support of our International Student Program and to visit a significant Carmelite
school in Malang, East Java, Indonesia, with a view to further fostering relationships between our schools. Nonetheless,
I am sure the College community will extend a very warm welcome to General Cosgrove and his wife and will profit
greatly from his visit.
Also visiting the College, in association with General Cosgrove’s visit, and taking part in the Assembly will be the
Carmelite Provincial of Australia and East Timor, Fr Denis Andrew, along with Fr Bruce Clark, Director of Carmelite
Formation in East Timor, and Brothers Angelino Dos Santos and Martinho Da Costa – Carmelites from East Timor,
currently living at Middle Park in Melbourne and preparing to continue their studies for the Priesthood at Yarra
Theological Union at Box Hill. It will be great to have them all here and I am sure they, too, will be made very welcome.
* * * * *
Congratulations to Ms Felicity Beggs and her husband, Paul O’Rourke, on the recent birth of their first baby – Seamus.
All are well.
Well done to the Year 10 students who completed their Work Experience last week in what seems to have been
exemplary and very worthwhile fashion. Well done, too, to the Year 9 students who seem to have handled the
challenges of their Year 9 camp very well last week. We hope they might appreciate some of the comforts and
“services” of home a bit more as a result.
Congratulations, too, to those students who braved very trying conditions last Saturday morning to compete in the All
Schools Cross Country Competition at Jells Park. Whitefriars finished a very creditable 7 th overall, with a Year 7 team
coming 4 th . This was a great “hit out” for the upcoming ACC Cross Country Carnival.
Well done, too, to the selection of students across all Year levels who took part in the Australian Informatics
Competition this Thursday. It is great to see students taking advantage of such “extension” and Learning
Enhancement opportunities. For further information about Learning enhancement opportunities and possibilities,
remember that Mrs Tania Sheko is our Learning Enhancement Coordinator and she is very happy to be contacted at
the College.
Finally, our condolences are extended to Lloyd (9C4) and Leyton (7C2) Taylor on the recent death of their
grandmother. My apologies for indicating last week that the grandmother of Ben Di Pietrantonio (11E2) had died. In
fact, it was his maternal grandfather. May they rest in peace.
From the Captains
We are well into second term now and things are starting to kick into place, students are learning, studying and
playing hard. Second term sport has begun and the teams are fit and fighting to represent Whitefriars as best they
can. There are some big weeks coming up for the SRC, such as “Social Justice Week” that has many activities for
students to enjoy, as well as our ‘Live Below the Line’ campaign that will be going on throughout the week.
2011 College Captains
L-R: Paul Harrington (Vice Captain),
Jackson Cairnduff (Junior Captain),
Patrick Wain (College Captain) and
John Tonti– Filippini (Vice Captain)
The Year 9s have started to thaw out after a freezing camp up in the mountains. The adventure was both challenging
and enjoyable, however the conditions meant some groups could not participate in the bike ride leg of the journey.
Unfortunately for the students, this did not prevent the hiking section of the camp (that has been known for how
difficult it can be). I can safely assure you that most students had a great time.
Whilst the Year 9s were away on camp, the Year 10s undertook their work experience, working in a variety of different
work places. They all found this enjoyable and with a small amount of pay, gave them an insight into what it is really
like in the workforce.
NAPLAN testing for Year 7s were also held last week, with the Year 9 students sat theirs this week. The Year 9s realised
it was their last time doing the test a fact were happy to share with the Year 7s; until they were put back in their place
by being reminded that exams are coming up in a few short weeks.
This term is bound to be a great one.
Jackson Cairnduff
Junior School Captain
Haemoglobin Heroes this week...
This week’s Haemoglobin Heroes came from a range of Year levels, Houses and number of previous donations, but
they all donated cheerfully and successfully. Three lives were saved by each of Will Hoole, Harley Irwin, Liam O’Connell,
Tim Petts, Matt Scannell and Daniel Tester. Mr David Campbell, one of the people who maintain our school facilities,
also donated this week; he is a repeat donor as he is well aware of the value of his donation. This means that overall 21
lives were saved by us this week – about a football team number of people who were helped by the Whitefriars
community!
As has been the case since early March, donors can admire the large plasma TV on the wall of the Refreshment Area
and read the plaque on it that states that it was donated by the Corsini House of Whitefriars College; they can then
have a drink from the new drinks fridge and relax on the two comfortable couches that were also part of the donation.
However, as good as these may be – and they are! - without the donors the Blood Bank cannot continue its function of
providing free blood and blood products to anyone in Australia who needs it – and to our troops overseas. Unlike
some other countries, in Australia donors are not paid and the blood is not sold to the recipients. Donors do receive
refreshments afterwards as a thank you, but the main reward are the feelings of satisfaction donors get from knowing
that they have helped other people in the community. So many people come away from the Centre looking cheerful
and feeling really positive about themselves and life – how else do you get a chance to save three lives just by giving
up one hour of your time
Donation dates for the rest of this term are Tuesday 24 May (donors especially needed for this date), Wednesday 1
June, Monday 6 June and Wednesday 29 June. Please email Mrs Crossman with the date of your choice; all are for
period 4. You can be dismissed from the Ringwood Centre or be driven back to school, usually in time for the normal
buses.
Give blood – it’s a really good feeling
The White Mantle
Religious Education Corner
Mr John Abrahams
Assistant Principal (Identity and Mission)
A Conversation… Nurturing the Spirituality of our Young People.
Late last term, I was fortunate to be present with a number of Year twelve students from Whitefriars and other neighbouring
colleges, at the Yarra Deanery forum discussion on Spirituality. This event was organised by Parish Priest, Fr Bill Gill and
Deanery Resource Coordinator, Mr Charles Balnaves. The afternoon provided an opportunity to be engaged in an enjoyable
conversation with Rose Marie Prosser as we all discussed the importance and meaning of Spirituality and the nurturing
amongst our young people.
What follows is the first of a two part ‘conversation’ Rosie Marie Prosser conducted, addressing the Spirituality of the young.
Part two of this conversation will appear in next week’s newsletter.
The name “Whitefriars”
refers to the mantle
worn over the habit of
the Carmelite priests
and brothers.
The Carmelites are
known as “White Friars”
because of their dress –
a white mantle worn
over a brown habit.
The white mantle is
linked with the Prophet
Elijah who wore a
similar garb, probably
of sheepskin.
The early hermits of
Mount Carmel adopted
this white mantle as a
symbol of their
devotion to Mary, the
mother of our Lord.
Parker J Palmer (sociologist and educator and author of `The Courage To Teach') says that spirituality is '.....the guest for
connectedness with something larger and more trustworthy than our egos- with our own souls, with one another,
with the worlds of history and nature, with the invisible winds of the spirit, with the mystery of being alive: Rose Marie
believes that spirituality is about attending to the Mystery of the everyday moment; It requires reflection. We may even
need to learn or teach reflection.
Spirituality needs nurturing, calling out. It's about becoming aware of how we want to `be' in life. It can be nurtured by
a sense of awe, by thankfulness and gratitude. Rose Marie believes that we can support young people by affirming
their interest in social justice, in the environment, in doing things "or others affirming young people in life-giving other
-centred activities”. This of course all demands interpersonal relationships -connectedness with our young people.
• How do we connect with our young people
• How do we give them our time
• How can we offer encouragement, affirmation, guidance
• How do we delight in them
Michael Carr-Gregg says that young people's survival is about connectedness. Young people with nurtured spirituality
and connectedness do better.
Three things that will nurture the soul are:
• A soul mate with whom we can share our deepest feelings
• To hear stories of other people and our tradition and,
• Prayer, the dialogue with the heart, pondering life's issues while holding the tensions.
These are all about connectedness - relationships.
• As adults can we be humble enough to be able to say that its what we do not only say, that connects with and
allows connection for our young people
• Do we give time to them, listening, encouraging, affirming
• How do we help them to stay connected with the family while still spreading their wings
Perhaps we could use driving time when we have them alone, going to bed time, job helping time, when they come
in the door from school time, at the dinner table...
• Do we know what it is that we do or say to them that says "I love you, you are loveable and good"
• Do we know their `love language' Each person may have a different one.
• Do we encourage and allow friends home
• Do we help them to get to where they need to go to connect with their friends
In living with, working with, being with young people and
their spirituality, their resilience, their zest for life, we help
them to become aware of their enjoyment,
'What did you enjoy about the......’ We can help them to
be aware of and own their strengths - their God-given gifts -
we can feed back to them.’
Year 9 OLP Camp
Mr James Box
Middle School Coordinator
On Monday 13 May the Year 9 cohort set off on what was to be, I am sure, a very memorable camp. The Year 9
program was set in three different Alpine areas. These being – Mt Stirling, Mt.Hotham and the Bogong High
Plains. Whitefriars in conjunction with the OEG (Outdoor Education Group) aims to educate through a focus on life
skills which endeavour to equip students with skills that allow them to make positive life decisions and cope with our
ever-changing world. These camps are created to be challenging both physically and emotionally and centre around
resliance, self learning, social and spiritual development. It gives our students the opportunity to show leadership skills
in an environment away from their normal surroundings and gives them the opportunity to interact in a different
environment. I am confident that after the experience of last week these outcomes and aims of the program have
certainly been met.
These young men should be very proud of the way that they dealt with the changing environment and at times quite
severe weather conditions. It was very pleasing to see such positivity and enjoyment of the experience from the boys
as they departed the bus on Friday afternoon.
Thanks needs to go to the OEG leaders, who with many years of experience in such conditions were able to adapt the
plans to make the program for the boys both safe and unforgettable. Also thanks to the staff members from
Whitefriars for their time and effort, both at College, and in dealing with the conditions and making sure that the camp
was a success.
Below are two accounts form students on their experiences throughout the week.
Julian Virgona – Year 9 Lisieux – Mt Stirling
On Monday 9 May, the Year 9 level of Whitefriars ventured for what was, no doubt, going to be a very memorable
camping trip. My group travelled to the cold mountain known as Mount Stirling. It started off nice and sunny, but soon
turned cold and snowy, as 25cm of snow fell on our tents overnight. We were one group lucky enough to go cycling
on the first day, before it snowed, up to a beautiful lookout point where we saw a deer. In the end, the snow provided
us with a lot of entertainment, as we got into many heated snowball fights and made a snowman named Billy. The
camp was a lot of fun.
This year’s camp was definitely a great experience, as many of us who had never been to the snow got to experience it
in a beautiful environment and got to camp in it, as well as hike and slide.
Ryan Malt – Year 9 Soreth – Mt Hotham
At 7:30am on Monday 9 May the Year 9s headed off to their selected OLP camps. On the bus to Mt Hotham feelings of
anticipation and excitement where running high. I think I speak for the whole Year level when I say we were nervous,
and for a good reason. Year 9 camp had earned itself a tough reputation, but no matter what the older boys said
nothing could prepare us for what lay in store for us. The weather was freezing and the wind was relentless. Tents were
weighed down by the snow, shoes froze and clothes got wet. It was challenging and draining, both physically and
mentally and it took a lot of self-determination and perseverance. All in all it was a challenging week for all but a very
enjoyable one.
Parent resources for the identification and support of gifted children.
How do you know if your child is gifted What can you do to support your gifted child Is there a list of characteristics
to identify gifted children What’s the difference between being bright and being gifted
If you have asked yourself any of these questions, you might like to have a look at the Parent Resources for Gifted
Support in The Friars Factor, Whitefriars’ new website for learning enhancement. Of course, only a professional will be
able to confirm whether or not your child is gifted, but these online resources are a good starting point for parents.
The Friars Factor provides links to a range of information including gifted organisations, checklists, advice on how to
work with your gifted child’s teacher, insights into how gifted children learn, and why gifted children need to be
Study Skills Workshop for Year 9 Students
Thursday 26 May
Study skills are important as we need to structure information and to recall this easily. There are many facts to learn -
some related, some not. How we order this detail and learn it affects how we can recall and use it. And yes....study is a
skill. We all need to learn how best to study and extensive research and our individual trial and error has highlighted
what works.
The Learning Support Centre will be holding a one hour workshop for all interested Year 9s on Thursday 26 May from
3.15pm - 4.15pm. Please email Mrs Marina Ensor (mensor@whitefriars.vic.edu.au) or Ms Elske Tecklenburg
All Schools Cross Country
Relays
Mr Shane Cotter
Cross Country Manager
Last Saturday, there were seven teams that represented Whitefriars College in the opening carnival of the season at
Jells Park. It was a very promising start with some great times posted. All boys ran well in what were very heavy
conditions on the day.
Under 13 and 14 runners ready for the race
Our Junior team (no. 1) , led by Rob Suller and Callum Thorburn recorded a Top 4 placing and gained valuable points
for the College. They were in a sprint to the finish and just missed out on a medal. As can be seen in the results
attached below, all our boys finished close together in times and they should have a good season ahead. Well done to
all Junior runners on their first carnival running for the Whitefriars.
Our Under 16 division produced some fine performances, notably that of Luke McKeown, Jackson Deane and Daniel
Harkin. They were ably supported by Lucas Beninca and Gil Hassall. Our middle division age groups are now starting to
develop some depth and are consequently becoming stronger.
Our Seniors led by Cameron Hunter, Pat Dineen, Kirk and Nico Thomson all ran very well and were able to match it
with some of the top schools during the race. When you consider that most schools that we are competing against
started their season in Term 1, it shows that our boys are on track to do well as we progress through the year. Our
overall placing was 7th in the state. A list of all times and school rankings is included in the link below.
A big thanks to the parents who transported their sons’ to the carnival and the Sport staff who organised the teams
with numbers and supplied times on the day. I hope everyone enjoyed the experience and had a sausage to eat that
was well cooked by Mr Collins. It doesn’t happen without all your support.
Our next carnival comes up with the Road Relays this year being at Albert Park on Saturday 25 June. We are starting our
training on Thursday 26 May at 7.15am-8.15am.
Our goal for this year is to finish in the Top 3 placings in the ACC and there will be a meeting at lunchtime in the gym
next Monday to give out information on the upcoming season.
Well done to all.
International Student Excursion
On Tuesday 4 May, we went on an excursion to Healesville Sanctuary. In the morning the weather was cloudy. I
thought that the trip was going to be uninteresting. When I arrived at school many of the local boys asked me “Why
are you in casual clothes” I replied that I am going to the zoo. Some laughed when I said that, because most people
think that zoos are just for kids. I thought the same as them, but the trip was better than I had expected.
International Students at Healesville
Sanctuary
The zoo wasn’t very big. Not too many animals. Out of all the events, I liked “The spirits of the sky” best because it was
my first time to see a bird show. I got to know many interesting facts about birds and how we are harming them by
destroying trees in the forest. I was amazed by how the birds react to the bird trainers as if they could understand
English.
I began to think that everyone of us is also an animal but we are using up the materials which were the habitats of
many other animals. It is too greedy for us humans to dominate the world. There are many animals that are already
extinct because of us. So are we going to sustain the population of other types of animals, or are we too greedy to
share the land that we have taken from them
We had some extremely mixed results in ACC sport this week. Although we had some very impressive victories, we
were also subject to a couple of large defeats against some very confident opposition.
Next Week
In Senior Football, both the 1 st and 2 nd XIII recorded significant victories, with the 1 st XIII defeating Mazenod by 66
points and our 2 nd XIII defeating Parade by 138 points. The best players in the 1 st XIII this week were Nicholas Garrett,
Jackson Freeman, Ryan Turner and Tim Jones (who took a spectacular mark and booted a match winning 8 goals). The
best players in the 2 nd XIII this week were Daniel Tester, Matthew Larosa, James Potter and Joseph Tambakis (who also
kicked 8 goals). Our Year 7 (1) football side also continued their solid start to the season defeating Parade College. The
players held off a fast finishing Parade challenge in the last quarter to win by 6 points.
The highlight for Whitefriars soccer this week was the very exciting 5 all draw played between our Senior (2) soccer
side and Mazenod. After leading at half time 3 goals to 2, our boys unfortunately had to play with only 10 players for
the majority of the second half. During this time Mazenod took control of the game and with 10 seconds to go led 4
goals to 5. Thankfully, our boys fought the game out and were able to kick an equalizing goal in the final 10 seconds
to draw the game. Our goal scorers this week were: James Campisi (2), Sam Khoury (1), Michael Tricarico (1), Prabdip
Pandher (1) and Nicholas Kelly (1).
