Working with separated children<br />
It is recommended that:<br />
• A ‘Code of Practice’ is drawn up for educationalists and others<br />
working with separated children.<br />
• VEC psychological services, with some assistance from the<br />
Separated Children Education Service, organise group meetings and<br />
ensure individual counselling is available to practitioners as required.<br />
Progression<br />
It is recommended that:<br />
• The BTEI for separated children is evaluated.<br />
• Separated children and aged out minors should not be relocated to<br />
different accommodation during the school year.<br />
• The DES consider allocating VTOS places to aged out minors<br />
with refugee status to allow them to progress to full-time<br />
PLC programmes.<br />
• The Department of Social and Family Affairs consider extending<br />
the Back to Education Allowance to separated children who reach<br />
adulthood with refugee status, intending to study in university.<br />
