As part of the STF Presidents’ Day in September 2011, certificates were presented to the
following teachers’ associations: Christ the Teacher, Good Spirit, Horizon, Lloydminster,
Prairie South, Prairie Spirit and Tri-West, who together contributed a total of $3,790 to
the McDowell Foundation in the previous year. The Prairie Spirit Teachers’ Association
received additional recognition as the local that donated the largest amount per
member.
Organizational Communications
Strategic DirectionS:
1. To increase awareness of the Foundation and McDowell research.
2. To enhance relationships with educational and community partners.
3. To increase the status of teacher research.
The Foundation continued to communicate with donors, researchers and the public
primarily through its website.
Governance and Administration
Strategic DirectionS:
1. To build an endowment fund through the investment of donated money.
2. To put in place adequate staffing, facilities, equipment and supplies to support the
operations of the Foundation.
3. To develop, maintain and improve effective governance and administrative processes.
InveStMentS
The McDowell Foundation fund is overseen by the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation
and managed by Greystone Capital Management. The goal of the Foundation is to
establish an endowment fund that is large enough to support ongoing substantive
research as well as cover the costs of governing and operating the McDowell Foundation.
All research funded and supported by the McDowell Foundation is currently paid for
through donations and the money accumulated in the McDowell Foundation fund.
StAFFIng, FAcIlItIeS AnD equIpMent
The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation oversees the staffing needs of the McDowell
Foundation and makes equipment and office space available to the Foundation in the STF
Building in Saskatoon. The McDowell Foundation reimburses the STF for all direct
expenses involved in operating the Foundation and pays an annual administrative fee to
reimburse the STF for indirect costs such as building maintenance. Staff and consultants
working for the Foundation are hired and paid for by the Foundation; however, the
Foundation receives an interfund transfer from the STF that covers the major costs
involved in assigning STF staff members to work for the Foundation. This support from
the STF has been instrumental in allowing the McDowell Foundation fund to grow
towards its financial goals of sustainable, substantive research and organizational
independence.
