The Coaches: UAB head coach Mike Getman, now in his 14th season as
UAB's head coach, has led the Blazers to three of the last six NCAA
Tournaments, including an appearance in the Elite Eight in 1999 and Sweet 16
in 2001. Before his arrival in 1992, the Blazers had recorded only three winning
seasons in the 13 years of the program.
Getman has three times been named conference Coach of the Year. He
holds a career mark of 199-112-26 (.629) in 18 seasons and a 157-86-17 (.637)
record in 13 seasons at UAB. Even more impressive is the total of 63 all-conference
selections he has coached at UAB, including six of the last 12
Freshman (Conference USA) and Newcomer (Great Midwest) of the Year
award winners. He is ranked among college soccer's top men's active coaches
(32nd in winning percentage and tied for 40th in victories) as well as all-time
wins (among the top 100 in winning percentage). Getman is among a handful
of coaches who both played for and coached a team to the NCAA College Cup,
accomplishing the feat twice as a player and as a coach.
Birmingham-Southern head coach Preston Goldfarb is entering his
24th season at the helm of the Panthers. Goldfarb guided the Panthers to a Big
South Conference runner-up finish in 2003, the school’s first season of NCAA
Division I eligibility. Since that season, BSC has captured back-to-back Big
South Conference Regular Seasons crowns and posted a runner-up finish in the
league tournament.
Goldfarb has been named conference Coach of the Year five times,
including the 2005 Big South Conference Coach of the Year; Region Coach of
the Year in 1996, 1997 and 1999; and was named NSCAA Region honoree in
1995 and 1997.
Series Notes: The Bears are looking for their first win versus UAB as they are
0-8-1 all-time against the Blazers. This will be Mercer’s first-ever match
against Birmingham-Southern.
Last Time Out: Mercer opened its season with tough 3-1 loss at Georgia
Southern. The Eagles took the early lead before junior Vicente Arze provided
the Bears only goal on a penalty kick just before halftime. Despite playing a
man down for nearly the whole second half, Georgia Southern was able to put
away the match with two second-half goals. Seniors Omar Liendo and Mark
McKeever registered three shots apiece in the game.
