Electric mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle sales <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a will be driven by an expand<strong>in</strong>g population, coupled with<br />

ris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come levels, and will account for 60 percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>to</strong>tal mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle demand by 2016.<br />

Demand <strong>to</strong> rise 5.5% per<br />

annum through 2016<br />

Demand for mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a is projected<br />

<strong>to</strong> rise 5.5 percent per year through<br />

2016 <strong>to</strong> 57.7 million units. Gas mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles<br />

and electric mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles, while collectively<br />

referred <strong>to</strong> as “mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles,” tend <strong>to</strong><br />

appeal <strong>to</strong> different types <strong>of</strong> consumers and<br />

different fac<strong>to</strong>rs affect growth. Sales <strong>of</strong><br />

electric mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles will be fueled by an<br />

expand<strong>in</strong>g urban population, comb<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

with ris<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>come levels, and will account<br />

for 60 percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>to</strong>tal mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle demand<br />

by 2016. Gasol<strong>in</strong>e mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles are also<br />

forecast <strong>to</strong> see healthy advances, particularly<br />

<strong>in</strong> rural areas, as demand is fueled<br />

by their relatively low cost compared <strong>to</strong><br />

alternative forms <strong>of</strong> transportation. Au<strong>to</strong>mobiles<br />

will pose the greatest competition<br />

<strong>to</strong> the mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle market <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a as ris<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>come levels have <strong>in</strong>creased the number<br />

<strong>of</strong> consumers able <strong>to</strong> afford cars.<br />

Electric mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle sales <strong>to</strong><br />

grow faster than gas types<br />

Sales <strong>of</strong> electric mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles are forecast<br />

<strong>to</strong> grow 6.4 percent per year through 2016.<br />

Demand will slow from the <strong>to</strong>rrid growth<br />

rate recorded over the 2001-2011 period<br />

as the s<strong>to</strong>ck <strong>of</strong> electric mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles rises,<br />

but sales will still be strong, boosted by<br />

ongo<strong>in</strong>g urbanization and higher <strong>in</strong>come<br />

levels. Sprawl<strong>in</strong>g urban development<br />

across Ch<strong>in</strong>a and <strong>in</strong>sufficient public transportation<br />

networks cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> create the<br />

need for low-cost personal transportation,<br />

and electric mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles serve that market.<br />

<strong>The</strong> usually higher cost <strong>of</strong> gas mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles<br />

and the restrictions on their use <strong>in</strong> cities<br />

make electric mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles a more practical<br />

and popular choice with<strong>in</strong> the urban areas.<br />

However, higher demand for light mo<strong>to</strong>r<br />

vehicles will cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> impact electric<br />

mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle sales, as higher <strong>in</strong>come levels<br />

have made acquir<strong>in</strong>g a private vehicle a<br />

reality for many <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a. Electric mopeds<br />

will be the most popular model because <strong>of</strong><br />

their blend <strong>of</strong> attributes -- e.g., they are<br />

faster than electric bicycles but less expensive<br />

than scooters, and there is little regulation<br />

over the use <strong>of</strong> electric mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles.<br />

Lead-acid batteries, the most widely used power source for electric<br />

mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a, are rechargeable batteries with relatively large<br />

power-<strong>to</strong>-weight ratios. <strong>The</strong> type <strong>of</strong> lead-acid batteries used <strong>in</strong> electric<br />

mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a are designed so that regular use will not cause the<br />

performance <strong>of</strong> the battery <strong>to</strong> decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>to</strong>o rapidly. <strong>The</strong>se batteries can be<br />

used <strong>to</strong> power mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles with both light and heavy body weights.<br />

Lead-acid batteries used <strong>in</strong> electric mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles account for about<br />

20 percent <strong>of</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a’s ref<strong>in</strong>ed lead consumption. One <strong>of</strong> the major<br />

concerns is the environmental consequences <strong>of</strong> improper disposal <strong>of</strong> old<br />

lead-acid sample batteries. This leaves lead-acid batteries vulnerable <strong>to</strong> replacement<br />

by newer, cleaner technologies <strong>in</strong> future electric mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle applications.<br />

Furthermore, the production <strong>of</strong> lead-acid batteries can cause<br />

pollution, although much less than that <strong>of</strong> the manufactur<strong>in</strong>g process<br />

for gas mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle eng<strong>in</strong>es. Stricter manufactur<strong>in</strong>g and battery disposal<br />

standards could serve <strong>to</strong> limit the sales <strong>of</strong> lead-acid battery mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles<br />

<strong>to</strong> some extent go<strong>in</strong>g forward.<br />
