Tónni’s Journey, cont.
Tõnni flies outside like the wind; in the
chamber he finds his sweetheart.
Mann’s father encourages, but the daughter
disappears from the chamber, trying to
hide herself.
Although the heart beats loudly, Tõnni will not
easily find his wife.
Now Tõnni announces loudly, “The song bird
is gone.”
Or in this stall has hidden now a bluebird.
Look at the miracle: The bluebird now has
allowed itself to be caught.
The wine was put on the table, and the bread
was put to the mouths.
Eat, drink, let wide, generous song verses ring
out.
Drink, eat, dance; shout in a chorus towards
the young ones.
From Tartu came dancing shoes, from
Kuressaa high heeled shoes,
So that Mann is able to dance; shout tra-la-la!
Every man trudges home, only in the hearts <strong>of</strong>
the young joy does not disappear, for the
wedding is close at hand.
It’s great to be alone, but it’s better to come
together.
Kaks laulu Ernst Enno sõnadele (Two songs after ernst Enno)
<strong>Schola</strong> Repertory Singers
1. Noore suve muinasjutt (Distant on the village meadow)
Distant on the village meadow, music pealing,
festive talk.
Forest murmur, distant echo, early summer’s
fairy talk.
And they’re singing mischief-makers, “Oh you
sacred little lake…”
Hand in hand now squeezing, folding;
“Precious you are held by me…”
2. Kuulmata kuskil kumiseb kodu (Home beckons in the silence)
Veljo Tormis
White nights, a thousand passions, thousand
total, who can know.
Night and joy, they flee so quickly, hurry now
and seek your joy.
And they’re singing, Mischief-makers, bringing
teardrops to your eye:
Oh, you sacred little lake shore, precious you
are held by me…
Refrain: Home murmurs somewhere in the silence.
Behind itself, deeply within. Luminous
starglow.
Stork covey southwardly flying high above.
Refrain
Where is your morning, where is your
afternoon
Deeply within you, narrow the plain,
Wistfully yearning, longing for there.
You are invited where you know not how to go.
Refrain
Come, o come! Swans covey; darkening ocean
lures you
Echoing storks must sleep; weariness weighing,
Answering long-tail ducks: Here, here is fine,
The waters are turbulent, both ahead and
behind
Longing accumulates; heavy hangs the head.
Refrain
