Welcome to Rochester, New York
General Information
Rochester is located approximately midway on the south shore of Lake Ontario.
Its metropolitan area extends southward from the lake about 25 miles (40 km) on
both sides of the Genesee River. It is part of Monroe County.
The central business district is located about seven miles (11 km) upstream from
the mouth of the Genesee River, which starts in northwestern Pennsylvania and
flows from south to north. There are falls in the river as it flows northward through
the heart of Rochester toward its mouth, located at Lake Ontario.
Lake Ontario, which normally remains unfrozen in winter weather, plays an
important part in shaping the climate of the Rochester area. Since the water in
the lake becomes very cold during the winter, typically 33° F (0.5° C), it takes a
great deal of time to warm up, thus delaying the start of spring weather. This also
causes a delay in the development of vegetation and reduces the losses
from spring frosts.
In the autumn the reverse action takes place. Summer heat warms the lake
water, which takes some time to cool off again; this prolongs the growing and
harvest seasons.
Getting to, and staying in Rochester
Flying
Rochester is located in the western part of New York State; it is not a suburb of New
York City. New York City is located approximately 373 miles (600 km) away by car,
with both cities located in the State of New York.
If you are flying, please remember that you want to go to Rochester, New York. There
are several cities in other parts of the United States with the same name. Rochester,
New York, has an airline code of ROC. Make sure your tickets show this code for your
final destination.
Harris’ Rochester facility is situated approximately 70 miles from the Buffalo airport
(BUF). Located close to the NYS Thruway (Interstate 90), the Buffalo airport could be
an alternative and offers a scenic drive through the western New York countryside and
the suburbs of Rochester and Buffalo.
If you are flying from an international location there are many popular ports of entry:
San Francisco, California (west coast); Miami, Florida (from South America); and Boston,
Massachusetts (from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East); as well as the New York
City airports. Each of the ports of entry has good airline connections to Rochester.
The vast majority of students arriving from international locations use the New York
City airports as their first stop in the United States. There are two international airports
serving New York City, Kennedy (JFK) and Newark (EWR), and one regional airport,
LaGuardia (LGA). All of these airports are within a 12.5-mile (20-km) radius of the
center of New York City. Direct flights are available from each of these airports to
Greater Rochester International Airport, Monroe County. To save time, some people
choose to transfer by bus or taxicab from one New York City airport to another in order
to take an earlier flight to Rochester. These transfers can be confusing and frustrating,
and should be avoided whenever possible.
The following are some of the airlines that offer regular scheduled flights in and out
of Greater Rochester International Airport, Monroe County: American Airlines, United
Airlines, USAir, Delta, Continental, and JetBlue.
The numbers for these airlines are listed in the Rochester telephone directory. A list of
airports serving the area can also be found at: http://www.monroecounty.gov/
airport-airlines.php. Ask your instructor for information regarding airline travel
service.
Driving
Driving to Rochester can be done via the U.S. interstate system. The city is located just north of the main east/west thoroughfare in New York State, U.S. Route 90.
This is a toll road. For students coming from the south, U.S. Route 390 can be used.
Consult a map or an internet mapping website for the best routing options. New York State has a law that does not allow you to use a handheld mobile telephone
while you drive. If you use a handheld mobile telephone while you drive, except to call 911 or to contact medical, fire, or police personnel about an emergency, you
can receive a traffic ticket and pay a maximum fine of $100 and mandatory surcharges and fees of $80. This violation does not carry any driver violation points
assigned by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
Getting around Rochester
Bus—Local
Most of the city and suburbs are served by a municipal bus service. Bus
stops are clearly marked along the street. Schedule information is available in
printed forms at public places. You can also call the bus terminal for help in
finding the right bus and current schedule information. The phone number is
listed in the Rochester Telephone Directory under “Regional Transit Service.”
Taxi
In Rochester, taxis are generally requested over the telephone, but also can be
found at the airport and large hotels. Since most people in Rochester
have private automobiles, the number of taxis that are available to the
public is limited as compared to many overseas cities or large cities
such as New York. As a result, it is nearly impossible to stand on the
street and hail a taxi. All taxis have rate meters which are used to
calculate the fare charges. Tipping the driver is generally considered
proper then paying a taxi fare. The tip should typically be 10 to 15
percent of the fare price, but this is your discretion.
Car Rentals
All of the U.S. national car rental agencies are represented in Rochester. Automobile rental agencies require that:
> Driver must be at least 25 years of age.
> Driver must possess either a valid, state-issued drivers license or a current international drivers license.
> Driver is held liable for any property damage to the vehicle. If you sign up for insurance through the rental
agency, then the insurance company pays for damage and the driver is then only typically responsible for
the first $250.00. This varies from rental agency to rental agency and should be checked when renting the
vehicle.
> New York State has a law that does not allow you to use a handheld mobile telephone while you drive. If you
use a handheld mobile telephone while you drive, except to call 911 or to contact medical, fire, or police personnel about an
emergency, you can receive a traffic ticket and pay a maximum fine of $100 and mandatory surcharges and fees of $80. This
violation does not carry any driver violation points assigned by the DMV.
> Driver is responsible for fines/penalties for “moving” violations (excessive speed, reckless driving, and signal light, etc.,
violations) and for any parking fines (parking in a no parking zone, expired parking meter, parking on the wrong side of
the street, etc.).
> You must have a major credit card to rent a vehicle on your own. Arrangements for reservations can be made through
Harris RF Communications to rent a car with prior agreement.
> Driver is responsible for fuel and periodic maintenance checks of the vehicle.
> It is the responsibility of the driver and front seat passenger to buckle the vehicle safety (seat) belts. Failure to do so in
the State of New York can result in a fine. You will find that most states and Canada require that safety belts be worn, so
it is a good idea always to buckle up.
Medical
One of the greatest concerns to anyone traveling out of town is the
threat of illness and the need to visit a doctor or a hospital. We have
over 2,000 physicians and surgeons supporting four hospitals in the
Rochester area. Be assured that some of the finest doctors and hospitals
in the world are located in Rochester.
Harris RF Communications has a full-time nurse and assistant on
duty during the work day, as well as trained emergency personnel.
If it should become necessary for you to see a doctor, our company
nurse will make the arrangements for you. If an emergency should
occur outside of the business day or outside of Harris, dial 911. The
911 system in Rochester can be used for emergencies such as medical,
