Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. At<br />
<strong>Simmons</strong>, Chloros was an art history major;<br />
she later received her M.S. in conservation<br />
at the University of Delaware and a<br />
fellowship at the Harvard Art Museum.<br />
“Art is vital to society,” said Chloros.<br />
“People have been making art from early<br />
times, and that artistic expression is an<br />
essential part of life. Art gives us a visual<br />
record of what was important (or not) in<br />
society throughout history. We really need<br />
art to understand how other people interact<br />
and view the world.”<br />
Another alumna, Daniela Blau ’08,<br />
(pictured at right) chose a different artistic<br />
path. Although she did not focus on music<br />
while at <strong>Simmons</strong>, this nutrition major<br />
from Costa Rica recently won a music<br />
scholarship from the BMI Foundation for<br />
her song “Y Si No Lo Sabes” (“And if You<br />
Don’t Know it”).<br />
“To me, music always has been about<br />
thinking outside of the box and being able<br />
to express myself in a unique way,” says<br />
Blau. “From making up short songs for<br />
kids about how fruits and vegetables are<br />
good for you, to solving complex problems<br />
in an innovative way, the arts have given<br />
me both a personal creative outlet and a<br />
unique approach to my field of study.”<br />
These alumnae, say Dean Raymond,<br />
are the reason why <strong>Simmons</strong> continues<br />
its commitment to the liberal arts.<br />
“<strong>Simmons</strong> is dedicated to providing<br />
both career preparation and a liberal arts<br />
education, without sacrificing the quality<br />
of either. Whether they are art and music<br />
majors, or they experience the arts through<br />
the modes of inquiry and our many arts<br />
organizations, all <strong>Simmons</strong> students know<br />
the value of the arts.” <br />

’03GS has a bachelor’s degree in arts administration<br />
from Wells <strong>College</strong>, worked in the<br />
Trustman Art Gallery at <strong>Simmons</strong> in the<br />
’90s, and participated in the <strong>College</strong>s of the<br />
Fenway Orchestra and <strong>Simmons</strong> Concert<br />
Choir. She currently sings with the Charleston<br />
Renaissance Ensemble in Charleston, S.C.<br />
