Welcome Back!
Headmaster’s Message
President’s Message
This is my first year as President of Fork Union Military Academy,
but everyone here, including your sons in Middle School, has
made me feel welcome and comfortable.
One of the first events I attended at FUMA was the Middle School
Ice Cream Social. As Betsy and I were going through the line, after
scooping our ice cream, one of the young boys asked Betsy if she
would like him to put some caramel sauce on her sundae.
Needless to say, she was impressed by his politeness, good
manners, and maturity…and Middle School won her heart.
Betsy and I are very happy here in Fork Union, and look forward
to meeting as many parents as time allows. I believe that even
great schools can be made better and plan to be actively involved
in the education, development, and inspiration of all the young
men whose lives are entrusted to us.
Please join our prayers for the future of this great nation, made
more secure when young people are successful in schools like this
that focus on holistic education emphasizing “Body, Mind, and
Spirit”.
RADM J. Scott Burhoe, USCG, Retired
President, Fork Union Military Academy
Congratulations on your completion of the first
grading period of this school session! For many
of you, this is the longest period of time you have
ever been away from home. We are proud of the
hard work and perseverance so many of you are
showing. You are proving to yourselves, your
families, and to us that you can handle
responsibilities that may have seemed impossible
at the beginning of the school year. We are
especially pleased with those cadets who worked
so hard to earn Academic Honors and Excellent
Conduct this first grading period.
We often compare the FUMA experience to a
marathon. The end of the first grading period is
simply one lap around the track. Many more laps
are to follow. I encourage each of you to find
your stride and to do your best. The race is a long
one, but you will persevere and ultimately
succeed if you commit to doing your best. The
finish line is many months away, but your efforts
now will determine your place in the pack.
Stay the course!
Fall Athletics
Report from the Soccer Field
By: Ben Chiovaro
Our first soccer game of the season was a hardfought
match against Goochland. This year, we have a
strong offense, which helped a little bit in our first game of
the season aganist Goochland. Bennett earned MVP because
he scored a hat trick (three goals), and he gave an assist to
Choi. The defense on the other team kicked it out toward
the goal so we got a corner kick. Coach Butt told Bennett to
take the kick. The offense and I lined up at the goal to try to
get it in. Bennett kicked it and Choi headed it in. We ended
up losing that match, but it was a good game.
We played Grymes Memorial School on September
29 th . We won the match 7‐1. It was a great match. Now that
our record is 2‐1, we have some newly gained confidence
that will help us in the future.
