2010 Annual ReportFork Union Military AcademyLt. Gen. John Jackson helps break ground on theAcademy’s new barracks building, Jacobson Hall.

Dear Friends,It is hard to believe that FUMA will celebrate 113 years as an institution in 2011: an institution that has providedthousands of young men with a solid, college preparatory education in a Christian environment. Barbara andI are privileged to have been a part of the Academy’s mission and ministry. As we near our last few monthsbefore retirement, we want to first and foremost thank all of our friends and families for your support andencouragement during our time here. It is through the contributions of your prayers, your time, your talents, andyour treasure that Fork Union Military Academy has been able to prosper and remain steadfast in its mission. With your support, we have overseen successful capital campaigns that brought many needed changes toour school – a new aquatic center, library additions, renovations to ourWicker Chapel and other buildings. In addition, we are grateful to haveparticipated in the building of a new dining facility and athletic center whichhave served many over the years. Fork Union Military Academy has growntremendously in the facilities, programs and opportunities it offers ouryoung men. This past October, the groundbreaking of the new barrackswas one of the most exciting and memorable events of our tenure here.Barbara and I thank you for the privilege of serving for these past 17 years. As always, the Lord gets the credit for all the good things that happenhere at His school. I know with His blessings and your continued supportand guidance, Fork Union Military Academy’s best days are still ahead. As Charles Goodall Snead wrote in his History of Fork Union MilitaryAcademy,I fancy that if its founder were permitted to look down from the portals above upon theinstitution he loved so well, his inmost soul would leap for joy, and all Heaven resound inpraises to our God for such a royal Christian school. But fine buildings and equipment donot make a good school, nor are they the best possessions of Fork Union Military Academy. The spirit of noble self-sacrifice that has made possible “our old school” has begotten anindefinable something – a spiritual atmosphere that enlivens, ennobles and uplifts all whocome under her influence. All of you – our alumni, friends, families, parents, grandparents, staff and faculty – are the institution that standstoday. With your support, our Academy’s gifts for fiscal year 2009-2010 exceeded many expectations in light ofthe nation’s economic situation, offering funding for our facilities, programs, and scholarship opportunities for ourdeserving cadets.Thank you again for your support and investment. May God continue to bless you and this Academy in the yearsto come.Best regards,Lt. General John E. Jackson, Jr.USAF (Ret.)President

Our Promises to Our DonorsI’ve thought for some time that I should list ourpromises to all of our donors past, present, and future.I want you to know exactly where we are comingfrom and precisely how we operate our fund-raisingprogram. It’s very important to us that we be straightshooters with you and upfront in our approach andphilosophy. Here are our promises to you:1First and foremost, the Academy belongs to the Lord.It is His place and He is in the life-changing businesshere. It is not a monument to its President, the Board ofTrustees, or the Development Office. All of us are simplyservants of the Lord in this place.2For over a century, the Lord has put his mantle ofapproval on the work being done here. What the Lordblesses, He can also take away. There have been times overthe century that they were close to shutting down, but theLord chose to provide the finances to keep it going. If Hechooses to close the gate, we will accept His leading andyield the outcome to Him. Until then, we will work withevery ounce of energy to accomplish the task at hand.3We seek God’s approval in our mission. One of theways to discern His approval is through the supportHe sends (or doesn’t send) from His people. During leantimes, we will make our needs known to our friends-butwe will not squirm, scratch, or claw for contributions. Wewill never resort to what we consider to be disrespectfuland dishonorable methods of fund-raising, even when theneeds are serious.4We will ask people not to support Fork Union MilitaryAcademy until their obligations to the local churchhave been met.5We will not operate the Academy at a deficit.6We consider the contributions we receive to be“sacrificial giving”-sent from loving people who havesacrificed to make their gifts possible. Our obligation, therefore, is to spend wisely in continuing to preserve theAcademy and its mission. We have no limousines, expenseaccounts, or condos in Hawaii. Every penny raised isused to sustain the Academy. Not one cent is paid tothe Development Officers or myself in the form of fundraisingincentive bonuses or salaries.7We will receipt all donations showing the fair marketvalue of any materials sent in order to help contributorsdetermine the tax-deductible portion of their gifts. (TheInternal Revenue Code permits donors to deduct theamount given to the Academy in excess of the value ofmaterials received from the organization.)8We will have an annual audit conducted by an externalaudit firm.9We will not try to raise more money than we need. When you designate a specific intended use of your10donation, your wishes will be honored. The President along with the Development Officers11are the primary fundraisers. It is our job to solicitfunds to sustain the Academy. We want to be respectfulin our approach, but make no excuses for doing our jobof asking for funds. Since tuition and fees cover 70% ofthe annual budget, we must raise 30% more to sustain theschool. If we don’t make the Academy’s needs known, whowill? Our spiritual mission is to have every young man12who comes our way hear the gospel. Over 400young men do receive the Lord every year while here atthe Academy. Our promise to you is that we will stayfocused on that mission and the funds you provide willsustain that mission, God willing. We will not sell or release our mailing lists to13anyone.We will maintain confidentiality of the amount14of your donations; and if you chose to remainanonymous, we will honor that request. We want only the best for the young men entrusted15to our care. We promise to do our best to be God’sservants and good stewards of His money. It’s that simple. Our prayer is that you will help us.Please.John E. Jackson, Jr.Lt. General, USAF (Ret.)President

For example, when U. S. News & World Reportpublishes their annual ranking of colleges, the alumnigiving percentage is an important factor in their rating. As you can see from this chart, participation by alumniclass year follows a pattern. It is not until the classesof the 1970’s and early 1980’s that we begin to seeparticipation at a rate higher than 5%, with recentgraduates showing a lower percentage of participation. In measuring alumni participation, it is not the size ofthe donation, but the act of the donation, that matters. Many foundations and corporations (an importantsource of FUMA’s funding) look at the rate of alumniparticipation in determining what funding requests theywill support.By donating even $15 or $20 per year, you can helpincrease our overall alumni participation while providingmuch needed support for the Academy and itseducational mission. No amount is too small to help, and in giving to ourAnnual Giving Fund, you will help increase our alumniparticipation rate and improve our ability to raise fundsfrom foundations and corporations.

Fundraising Continuesfor New BarracksMomentum continues to roll along in our progresstowards construction of our new barracksbuilding, the first such facility constructed onour campus in over half a century. Our current barracks buildings were constructed manyyears ago and have seen many generations of cadetspass through their halls. After so much usage they canno longer meet our needs or our standards. Perhapssome of you are living in homes built many years agoand know first-hand the high costs of maintaining theplumbing and electrical systems in older buildings.Without today’s energy-efficient materials, the costs ofheating and cooling those structures are very high aswell. Add to these costs the desire for better securityand safety features in today’s schools, and the need for amodern building was evident.Jerry and Laura Jacobson of Sugarcreek, Ohio enrolledtheir two young sons in the Middle School at ForkUnion Military Academy in 2006. In the interveningyears, the boys had done well and their parents wereimpressed with the work of the Academy. When theJacobsons learned that the Academy was raising fundsfor a new barracks, they decided to help out -- with agift of $10.1 million. In appreciation for this generousand timely support, the Academy has decided to namethe new barracks Jacobson Hall. Many more alumni, parents and friends have steppedforward to help with this important project, and theAcademy is headed toward the finish line in fundingthis construction .At this point, the Academy needs to raise a little morethan $3.7 million to reach our goal. Groundbreakingtook place in October, 2010 and we hope to have thebarracks completed for the 2011-2012 school year.
